From Putuamayo World Music:
"Every so often, an album comes along that reminds us why we are so moved by song: the melody, the rhythm, and the message. Putumayo has presented a variety of world music CDs, but African music has been the consistent heart and soul of its offerings.
Putumayo World Music is pleased to present Acoustic Africa, a captivating collection showcasing some of Africas greatest singer-songwriters in beautifully stripped down displays of acoustic mastery. These artists are helping to spearhead an acoustic revolution in stark contrast to the studio-based, synthesized dance music that became the standard for African pop-stars of the 1980s and 90s. On Acoustic Africa, youll discover gentle folk songs from Senegal, a protest song from South Africa, blues-tinged ballads from Mali and much more.
Acoustic Africa featured artists Habib Koit (Mali), Vusi Mahlasela (South Africa), and Dobet Gnahor completed a highly successful tour of the US, Canada and Europe in 2006 as part of the Putumayo Presents: Acoustic Africa concert tour in support of the CD release."
Westerners often aren't aware that there is a thriving contemporary music scene in Africa. This Putamayo collection brings some of the acoustic renditions of modern African songs to your CD player.
It's hard to encompass an entire continent, with a large number of languages, but this is a great introductory "unplugged" anthology for starters.
