Not that we discount all conspiracy theories, but this book is not a
theory; it's the truth. Rossi has performed an admirable service by providing
nugget size, easily understandable insights into the people and corporations
who are reshaping America and the world from their perspective (and it's
not a pretty picture).
In short, we peons tend to view the world from the bottom up. We take
scattered bits of information and try to formulate an idea of what the "Masters
of the Universe" are up to. Rossi provides a neat compendium of
the forces that have come together to create a world in which financial
relationships, delusions of grandeur, and raw power make nation states
like pieces of timber to be sliced up in a saw mill.
Not that this is a treatise. Actually, it is composed like a hip encyclopedia
that gives you background on key players in the new "great game." We
are like Plato's man who can only see the shadow of reality; the people
and companies in "What Every American Should know" are the
reality. They are calling the shots.
Rossi notes in her introduction, "As I illustrate in this book,
a small group of extremists -- many of whom have worked together before
-- are redesigning the mechanics of this country. They are trying to
redraw the world, and they are shrinking our rights in the process. The
media has stopped holding the powers that be accountable for this action,
and the legislature, where many extremists now hold powerful seats, is
an arena where some are trying to upset the balance of power -- including
attempts to disempower the courts. And meanwhile, lying is so common
it's nearly acceptable, and those who point out the lies are drowned
out by official denials. We're losing the truth, we're losing perspective,
we're losing the original ideals of this country and our birthrights
are vanishing with them."
Well, that about says it all, doesn't it?
What's important to remember about this book is that it is actually
both factual and fun. It's great for browsing or reading straight through.
Learn the scoop on Halliburton, Big Pharma, Tim LaHaye, The Carlyle Group,
Reverend Moon, the Bush Insiders and much, much more.
To keep things a little hopeful, Rossi also profiles people she identifies
as "Agents of Change" who are challenging the "Masters
of the Universe."
It's all a delightful resource book that reminds you that modern America
is really being run by people and multinational companies other than
the citizens of the nation. We are just pawns in their plans.
After reading through these profiles, all we can say is, "Boy,
do we have our work cut out for us to restore democracy."
