In this timely book, The Dalai Lama offers another route, in which the cultivation of science and the nurturing of the spirit co-exist and strengthen each other. To The Dalai Lama, science is not an enemy that is heretical to religious beliefs; but rather, he asserts, science is a manifestation of the divine -- and should be appreciated as such, as long as it serves the common good.
The Dalai Lama writes: "I believe that spirituality and science are complementary but different investigative approaches with the same goal of seeking the truth. In this, there is much each may learn from the other, and together they may contribute to expanding the horizon of human knowledge and wisdom."
The rigid "end-times" fundamentalism that is in control of the Bushevik war on science (along with the Cheney "pillage and plunder the earth's natural resources" corporations) is a destructive force that offers up empty doctrinaire "fixed beliefs" at the expense of spirituality and intellectual exploration.
It is perhaps fittingly ironic that we look to the East to find the reaffirming message that science and the spirit are both manifestations of divine forces, however one might define that divinity.
The Dalai Lama offers a path for exploration of the soul, personal renewal and the advancement of civilization through science. The Falwells, Robertsons and Bushes of the world offer only a road that heads backwards in time; seriously wounds the American tradition of inventiveness, innovation and research; and replaces spiritual exploration with a stifling "closed box" of intolerant ideology.
This book is subtitled: "The convergence of science and spirituality." Would that America could embark upon that path! Bush is once again running the United States into the ground in yet another area, our ability to be scientific leaders in research and industry.
