Glenn Greenwald
BuzzFlash.com's Review (excerpt)
Glenn Greenwald is living proof of the meritocracy of journalism on the Internet. The best commentators and writers rise to the top based on reader response. Internet scribes are not guaranteed a sinecure of mediocrity, such as David Broder and Robert Novak are in the mainstream media. Greenwald earned his now national reputation and Salon.com writing position by having something to offer: trenchant, credible analysis.

Greenwald started as one blogger among hundreds of thousands with his site "Unclaimed Territory." As a Constitutional lawyer, he quickly became a "go-to" commentator on the nuances of Bush Administration assaults on the Constitution like the outing of Valerie Plame and illegal wiretapping. Greenwald penned a book, "How Would a Patriot Act? Defending American Values From a President Run Amok," that received rave reviews and became a progressive bestseller.

Despite his broad appeal to BuzzFlash readers and other progressives, Greenwald is not a rabid partisan. He wields the scalpel of a keen legal mind that is frustrated with the blatant disregard of the Bush Administration for the rule of law and America's most fundamental legal foundations. In short, he in some ways is a true conservative in that he passionately believes that the Constitution should be respected, not abused.

In fact, Greenwald reminds us of the paradox that the radical right claims to be strict Constitutionalists when they are, in fact, ardent Constitutional revisionists. Greenwald respects the Constitution and the body of law that has accumulated over the past 240 years. The Bush Administration does not.

His second book, "A Tragic Legacy: How a Good vs. Evil Mentality Destroyed the Bush Presidency," should be another bestseller when it comes out on June 26.

From Salon.com:

Glenn Greenwald was a constitutional lawyer in New York City, first at the Manhattan firm Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz, and then at the litigation firm he founded, Greenwald, Christoph. Greenwald litigated numerous high-profile and significant constitutional cases in federal and state courts around the country, including multiple First Amendment challenges. He has a J.D. from New York University School of Law (1994) and a B.A. from George Washington University (1990).

In October of 2005, Greenwald started a political and legal blog, Unclaimed Territory, which quickly became one of the most popular and highest-trafficked in the blogosphere. Upon disclosure by the New York Times in December 2005 of President Bush's warrantless eavesdropping program, Greenwald became one of the leading and most cited experts on that controversy. In early 2006, he broke a story on his blog regarding the NSA scandal that served as the basis for front-page articles in the Washington Post, the Los Angeles Times and other newspapers, all of which credited his blog for the story. Several months later, Sen. Russ Feingold read from one of Greenwald's posts during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on Feingold's resolution to censure the president for violating FISA. Greenwald's blog was also cited as one of the sources for the comprehensive report issued by Rep. John Conyers titled "The Constitution in Crisis." In 2006, he won the Koufax Award for best new blog.

“In the bare-knuckle cacophony of the blogosphere Glenn Greenwald has been a beacon of clarity chronicling President Bush’s unfolding war on the rule of law. No one is better placed to explain how the president’s embrace of extremism in the battle against extremism has put the country’s most sacred ideals, even the country itself, under the gravest threat.”

–- Josh Marshall, editor of Talking Points Memo

“Glenn Greenwald has emerged as one of the nation’s most incisive and articulate exponents of the critique of the Bush Administration. In admirably clear prose and with the ferocity of a former litigator, he is day in and day out building a powerful case against an undeniably consequential and radical presidency.”

–- Dan Froomkin, WashingtonPost.com White House Watch columnist
