Joni Mitchell and Neil Young Play a Tribute to "The Band"
BuzzFlash.com's Review (excerpt)
The last concert of "The Band," to many people, symbolized the end of authenticity in nationally released American rock music.

"The Band" had a sound that came from a time capsule of the 1800s and blended with rock n'roll to create haunting, seductive, mysterious music that was as authentic as it was exhilirating.

Martin Scorsese, who has a thing for documenting talented musicians, was around in 1976 to record this quintissential rock movie. The DVD being offered on BuzzFlash is the remastered 25th anniversary edition.

A quotation on the cover of the DVD boasts: "The Finest of All Rock Movies."

Of course, you have to like "The Band" for that to be true -- and we love them. In an age when rock is mass-produced and branded, "The Band" reminds you that there was an era when rock musicians had distinctive voices and sounds. They could be spritual, moving and poetic. They were in the true sense of the word, originals. No cookie cutter could have produced the distinctive sound of "The Band."

As far as cameo appearances, you got them in "The Last Waltz." Van Morrison, Joni Mitchell, Paul Butterfield, Bob Dylan, and others appear to pay tribute to "The Band" during their final concert together.

Also included on the DVD is newsly released footage, including: Dr. John, Ringo Starr, Eric Clapton, Paul Butterfield, Ron Wood, Stephen Stills, and Neil Young.

By 1976, seemingly tired of the constant workload, they retired from touring with a massive Thanksgiving Day concert on November 25, at the Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco, California. It featured a horn section with arrangements also by Alan Toussaint, and a stellar list of guests, appearances by Hawkins, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Muddy Waters, Dr. John, Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, Ringo Starr, Eric Clapton, Ronnie Wood, Paul Butterfield, and Neil Diamond, with brief readings by poets Lawrence Ferlinghetti and Michael McClure.

The concert was filmed by Martin Scorsese, and was subsequently combined with interviews, as well as separately-recorded soundstage performances with country singer Emmylou Harris ("Evangeline") and legendary gospel-soul group The Staple Singers ("The Weight"). Released in 1978 as The Last Waltz and directed by Martin Scorsese, it was accompanied by a triple-LP soundtrack.

Martin Scorsese's 1978 film of The Band's all-star farewell concert, "The Last Waltz," is the greatest rock concert movie ever made - and maybe the best rock movie, period. Now being re-released with restored picture and sound, for the original concert's 25th anniversary, "The Last Waltz" is a movie that exactly fits the words of Bob Dylan, who helps close the show with "Forever Young."

This movie - and the event it records with such rapture and passion - is forever young, despite the passage of 25 years since The Band (lead guitarist and backing vocalist Robbie Robertson, bassist/singer Rick Danko, keyboardist/singer Richard Manuel, organist/horn player Garth Hudson and drummer/lead singer Levon Helm) took the stage at San Francisco's Winterland Theater for what was billed as their farewell concert "with friends."

In this intoxicating movie - which has pungent Scorsese-led interviews with the lazily reminiscing Band members interspersed with their hard-rocking stage collaborations with Dylan, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Muddy Waters and many others - sight and sound play together magically, seamlessly. Scorsese's multiple cameras don't just capture the show, they enhance and magnify it, merge with it.
