BuzzFlash.com's Review (excerpt)
The sad-assed rejoinders of many Busheviks when you advocate extricating ourselves from the Iraq fiasco is, "The Democrats don't have any plan. They just complain."

Well, Good 'Ol George McGovern and foreign policy specialist William R. Polk should talk to those losers, because they have a plan for leaving Iraq with dignity and compassion for the Iraqi people whose lives we have turned into a nightmare.

Not only is it a plan: it's detailed and a damn good one.

It's subtitled "A Practical Plan for Withdrawal," and fulfills that expectation when you read it.

"Practical" isn't a word in the vocabulary of the Bush fantasists.

But McGovern and Polk make such a persuasive, well-thought out argument, anyone but the Busheviks would be hard put to resist their strategy.

Of course, it relies on a cognitive process that actually analyzes the situation on the ground and our foreign and domestic policy needs -- so that already puts it outside the grasp of the White House crowd.

How ironic that McGovern -- the thoughtful anti-Vietnam war Senator and presidential candidate -- should return to offer a graceful exit from Iraq.

We owe him and William Polk a debt of gratitude.

Now when any suicidal, Bush Kool-Aid drinking Republican makes the charge that the Dems have no plan, give them this book.

He holds the Distinguished Flying Cross for service as a bomber pilot in World War II and the Presidential Medal of Freedom for humanitarian service.

William R. Polk, the author of Understanding Iraq, taught at Harvard until becoming the member of the State Department's Policy Planning Council responsible for the Middle East in 1961. From the Argus Leader (Sioux Falls, South Dakota):

Former Sen. George McGovern, a leading opponent of the Vietnam War, continues to speak out about Iraq, discussing it during a recent speech at the downtown library in Sioux Falls.

The Vietnam War was his issue when he won the 1972 Democratic Party nomination for president. He recently reviewed his campaign speeches focusing on that war, concluding, “Today, you can just cross out Vietnam and write in Iraq. It’s the same thing. That insurgency kept rolling in Vietnam the longer we stayed.”

The insurgency in Iraq has become a challenge too big for an outside power to handle, he said.

“They don’t have to win any battles. They just have to kill people. We are trying to do now what Nixon attempted in Vietnam. We are trying to turn security over to the Iraqi army – the same people in Saddam Hussein’s army and they have friends in the insurgency,” McGovern said. (End of Excerpt)
