Dixie Chicks, Winners with Integrity; George W. Bush, Loser with No Shame.
BuzzFlash.com's Review (excerpt)
Live from the 2007 Grammy Awards!

"The Dixie Chicks made music history at the 49th Annual Grammy Awards ceremony on Sunday, February 11, when they became the first female group ever to take home the big three top Grammy honors: Song Of The Year (for "Not Ready To Make Nice"), Record Of The Year (for "Not Ready To Make Nice") and Album Of The Year (for Taking The Long Way).

The Dixie Chicks achieved another Grammy milestone on Sunday when Taking The Long Way became the first Best Country Album ever to also win the coveted Album Of The Year trophy."

George W. Bush and your suicidal followers, take that!

BuzzFlash is not a music critic, like our knowledgeable monthly CD reviewer, Tony Peyser. But we do know the music we like. More importantly, it feels doubly good to support the music we like and the politics we like by buying music from a group that isn't afraid to battle against Bush, even though it's caused them a heap of grief in the country music world.

But even with all the Neanderthal backlash that their pro-America, "anti-Bush the destroyer" comments have caused them, the latest album of the Dixie Chicks, "Taking the Long Way," is topping the charts around the nation. So, our third reason for offering "The Long Way" as a premium is we like winners! They have become, according to their website, the first female group ever to have three albums debut in the top slot.

If you support the Dixie Chicks for their political courage, but don't know their "sound," we can fix that.

Description | back to top

With Taking The Long Way, one of the most anticipated albums in recent years, the Dixie Chicks are putting themselves out there like never before. For the first time, every one of the disc's fourteen songs are co-written by the Chicks themselves, exploring themes both deeply private and resoundingly political. Collaborating with legendary producer Rick Rubin (who has worked with everyone from Johnny Cash to the Red Hot Chili Peppers, from Run DMC to Neil Diamond), the biggest-selling female band in history has truly pushed themselves to new heights both as writers and as performers.

"Everything felt more personal this time," says Maines. "I go back to songs we've done in the past and there's just more maturity, depth, intelligence on these. They just feel more grown-up." Inspired by such classic rock artists as the Eagles, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, and the Mamas and the Papas, Taking The Long Way adds a sweeping, Southern California vibe to the Chicks' down-home intimacy. That ambition is matched with lyrics addressing everything from small-town narrow-mindedness ("Lubbock or Leave It") to the psychology of celebrity ("Everybody Knows"). "This album was about finding a balance in the different aspects of our lives," says Emily Robison, "but there's something thematic there, too--it's really about being bold."
Other Reviews | back to top

"The surefire hooks, sweetly tart harmonies and sad spunkiness suggest a country Fleetwood Mac—and that's a compliment. It's their best to date, but if you want to hear it, you may have to buy it."
-- Newsweek

"Embraces the depth and fury of classic rock while remaining true to the trio's Texas roots."
-- Rolling Stone

"A deeply personal and thoroughly unapologetic set of fully realized pop-rock-country."
-- Boston Herald

"If you wonder whether they have regrets about the Incident, 'Not Ready to Make Nice' makes it clear they don't. When Maines gets to the part about all the death threats, her voice rises and the strings well up; it's a true pop-money-shot moment."
-- Entertainment Weekly

"Without chickening out on their politics or compromising their country roots, Maines and company have now made an album aimed at broadening their appeal to the worlds of rock and pop."
-- San Francisco Chronicle

"an album Rosanne Cash would have been proud to make, its fervent, forming music raising the ghosts of what's unspoken."
-- Los Angeles Times
