The latest in the ever-changing lines of Bushevik spin on Iraq appears to be that a few GI deaths are a small price to pay for security (Tommy Franks) -- and that liberty needs to be curtailed sometimes for security (Bush Boy Toy # 1, Kansas Senator Pat Roberts).
Anybody with a non-Stepford Bushevik brain could knock both of these latest excuses for the war on terrorism by simply pointing out that Bush and his ship of fools have been utter incompetents and failures in their efforts. If Iraq is just one example of their ineptitude, it shows that instead of putting out fires, they are experts at igniting them.
So, sacrificing liberty for security isn't even an issue when we have feckless egomaniacs putting us more at risk for terrorism everyday.
But suppose that we had competent leadership, people who actually knew what they were doing? What would our position be about giving up some of our freedoms for security?
Benjamin Franklin had an answer to that question in a quotation that is attributed to him: "Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety."
And Franklin Roosevelt had the most direct response to Karl Rove's partisan, cynical manipulation of the American population through fear. Roosevelt, in his first Inaugural Address said, "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself."
Of course, that means that we should fear Bush, because his sole ruling strategy is the use of fear in various forms.
The quotations of Franklin and Roosevelt are featured in a new BuzzFlash postcard (our "Bush Lied" postcards will be returning soon with updated war casualty statistics). In addition, on the back of the postcard is our official BuzzFlash slogan, "Fight Ignorance: Read BuzzFlash.com."
So, send the message around America -- and the world.
Bush gives us neither liberty nor security; instead he gives us fear.
Ben Franklin and FDR knew what they were talking about. Fortunately for them, they didn't have to know Bush.
