These cotton scarves are very colorful and intricately made. There are two variations: a blue scarf and an orange scarf.

Both colors are bright yet not annoying to the eyes. The material is just soft enough without feeling like it’s going to slide off. The edges have stitches that are the same color of the rest of the fabric to keep the neat shape of the scarf. These scarves are decorated with white, tie-dyed, diamond shaped “dots” that vary in size. There are five rows of designs in the scarf, consisting of a group of diamonds (with the bigger diamonds in the center of each group), connected to the next group of diamonds by white running stitches (see picture). It adds contrasting designs and texture to the scarf, giving it a unique personality. These are great for the spring, since they are not overly warm and the bright colors welcome the change in seasons.


These are Fair Trade products made by artisans. The artisans are compensated fairly for their work, and are given development help to help their communities rise above poverty.

About the Artisans:

Several northwestern regions of India were completely destroyed by a massive earthquake in January 2001. It was the most severe earthquake (out of more than 90 earthquakes) to hit Kutch in 185 years. The area affected is called the Rann of Kutch, a seasonally marshy saline clay desert located in the Thar Desert, in the state of Gujarat, India. It is the home of 3 artisan cooperatives: the Kala Raksha vocational school of art, Qasab and WAMA. Now, years later, the artisans have rebuilt their lives and dreams thanks to their traditional art: fine mirror-work embroidery, traditional weaving and leather work.
