Carrie and Mary Dann of the Shoshone Tribe
BuzzFlash.com's Review (excerpt)
"Masterful storytelling, beautiful cinematography, and unforgettable characters. A truly exceptional human rights film whose message and impact will reverberate for years to come."

- John H. Biaggi, Director, Human Rights Watch Int'l Film Festival

Native American Shoshone grandmothers and ranchers in a desolate part of Nevada "Carrie and Mary Dann endure terrifying roundups by armed federal marshals in which thousands of their horses and cattle are confiscated, for the crime of grazing them on the open range outside their private ranch - even though that range is part of 60 million acres recognized as Western Shoshone land by the U.S. After the government sued them for trespassing, their dispute went to the Supreme Court, and eventually the United Nations."

Based on an 1800s treaty between the U.S. Government and the Shoshone Tribe, the elderly and hardy Danns should have cattle and horse grazing rights on their Tribal land. But guess what, a gold mining company apparently convinces the Washington government to make a land grab because they want to mine for gold with a new process on the Shoshone land, and the only way that they can do it is if the U.S. Government violates the treaty and claims the land does not belong to the Shoshone tribe.

This is a heartbreaking, professionally done documentary, narrated by Mary Steenburgen, that ends with the U.N. condemning the United States Governnment for violating indigenous rights.

This is a remarkable true story about how two crusty Shoshone grandmothers on a remote ranch become victims of a U.S. Government still abusing Native American rights and siding with greedy corporations.

"A must-see documentary for its message that the United States acquisition of tribal lands under the guise of legality continues today."
- Dr. Linda Parker, Professor, Dept. of American Indian Studies, San Diego State University

"Beautifully evocative yet morally disturbing. Breathtaking footage."
- Patrice H. Kunesh, Director, Inst. of American Indian Studies, University of South Dakota

"A powerful testament to Indian self-determination and women-power. The Dann sisters deserve our utmost respect." - Michael Smith, Founder and Director, American Indian Film Festival

"American Outrage" is part of an ongoing "Human Rights Watch" documentary series.

Courageous, haunting, and beautiful all at the same time.
