This fun necklace is handmade using recycled glass! The necklace features teal beads throughout with lovely amber colored recycled glass balls to form a tiara shape on your neckline. Measures 19" in length. The necklace clasp is silver plated. These necklaces are handmade by a Fair Trade women's cooperative in Ghana. The necklace can be funky or elegant depending on whether you pair it with a t-shirt and jeans or a dressy sweater or dress.

Meet the Artisan:

Agnes Kwao makes the recycled glass beads. Before becoming a bead-maker, Agnes was a farmer, growing yams, tomatoes and cassava on a farm. Then, in 1999 the rains failed and so did the harvest. Agnes and her husband, a car-fitter, couldn’t support their 4 children on what they earned so Agnes decided to learn how to make glass beads from her sister. After just 8 months she felt competent enough to branch out on her own and now, when business is good, she even employs her sister to help her out. Agnes sells her beads twice a month at a market in Koforidua, over an hour’s drive away from her home in Odumase-Krobo. The journey on public transport, with bags of heavy beads makes market days difficult so Agnes is delighted to be given the opportunity to sell her beads to a fair trade cooperative in Ghana. With the extra money she can earn, Agnes hopes to give her children a good education and she has high hopes for them. Her daughter wants to be a nurse and she dreams of the three younger boys becoming a bank manager, a doctor and a craftsman to take over the family business. With the help of the fair trade coop, Agnes hopes to:

*Pay for her children’s education

*Save money for her old age and

*Provide her mother with financial support.
