August 22, 2002 Regarding Al Gore Part III: The People Speak by Rebecca Knight
The past two "Southern Style" columns have been devoted to the candidacy of Al Gore in 2000 and possibly in 2004. I wrote of my reasons for supporting Gore and you have responded quite eloquently through e-mails to me. If your messages are any indication, there is tremendous support for Gore and no support at all for Joe Lieberman. I am fully aware that this is hardly a scientific survey. However, when people speak of their personal opinions it is worthwhile to understand their positions. So, here goes. Here is a sampling of the hundreds of messages received. Thank you all for responding!

Regarding Al Gore, Part I: The 2000 Election
**********
You are SO right about Al Gore. Being brilliant, eminently qualified, principled, internationally respected was not enough for the prissy country club liberal press. They piled on 'cause he wasn't cool enough. The tepid support of party leadership was also maddening. Then the convergence of corporate media, savage, criminal Republican power grab, and the silent people killed our democracy. NOW LOOK! I see Gore as our only hope, but the pundits are at it again. Can we win this? Keep up the good work! I am in red WV and I am trying..... Your article gives me hope. ********* Another good one, Rebecca. Keep them coming.

Again, thanks for your insight, Ms. Knight. I have also been busy writing various congressmen and senators -- one of which was Joseph Lieberman -- reminding him and them that Al Gore won the 2000 election; and in truth, they failed us by not fighting for the truth regardless of party affiliation. Now we are reaping the rewards of their stupidity, NOT AL GORE'S. Had they done what they were hired to do, we would have a different situation today! Leiberman showed his Judas-like qualities during the Lewinsky farce! This man was supposedly a friend of the president but stabbed him in the back with his lack of support and criticism. When Al Gore chose Lieberman as his VP, I was flabbergasted! Now the little weasel is stabbing Al Gore in the back! I think this shows what he is made of, and he will never get my vote -- That is exactly what I wrote the little weasel about, too. Also, I reminded him that many of WE THE PEOPLE have lost everything -- courtesy of W and the corrupt business CEOs that support him -- and will be working until we're 90! Joseph Lieberman will be able to retire with a very generous pension paid for by WE THE PEOPLE while we are now forced to start over from scratch! THERE IS SOMETHING TERRIBLY WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE! SINCE I CAN'T HAVE BILL CLINTON BACK -- GIVE ME AL GORE!!!!!!!
********** Hello Rebecca, Keep
up the good work..... **********
You are a great writer! I just have one thing to say about Gore. I voted for him in 2000, but if he picks Joe Lieberman for VP again, I will NOT vote for him in 2004. I cannot vote for someone who conspired with Lynn Cheney to blackball academics who expressed liberal views after 9/11. Lieberman was also was very much responsible for Enron and all other business failures by going against Clinton's attempts to regulate these companies in the 1990s. Joe Lieberman makes me sick. He is no democrat.
I will vote for Gore if he picks a real fighter and if he continues to speak out like he has done in the recent past. He needs to stick to his convictions and not let anyone (especially those slimy handlers) talk him into backing away from his true beliefs. People will know who he is when he sticks to his views no matter what. His mistake the last time was in backing away from things he said at the Democratic convention (where he got a big boost in the polls right after his speech!)

Thank you for your article. Always love a good read. You are exactly right about Al Gore and 2004. Anything less than Al insures another 4 years of Bushit. The populism cause is the only thing that will win the day. You can see it as clear as the nose on your face, and the rest of the right wing dems (i.e. Leiberman, amongst others) are going to ruin the party. They have no idea how to think for themselves or read the American people.

brilliant
article. ********** Keep
up the good work. I thought I was alone. (I still feel that way when I
watch TV.) ********** THANK YOU AND BLESS YOU FOR PUTTING THOSE CROOK BASTARDS IN THEIR PLACE
********** Dear Rebecca, I just found your article on BuzzFlash and wanted you to know how much I enjoyed seeing my own thoughts in print! You see, I grew up with Al in D.C., since the 4th grade, we attended the same "Dancing School" where we were supposed to be getting manners, etc.! Also, I went to college with Tipper and we roomed on the same floor of the dorm...she is a wonderful person, always has been. And you are so right, no one has ever given him a break, not even the more "intelligent" ones like Maureen Dowd, et al. A day does not go by without my wishing he were running the show instead of these greedy monsters...I think we should start a campaign to refute all of the lies and force the media to face the real issues! ********** This constant carping about Al Gore and his campaign drives me nuts. Sure, there are things I might have liked to see him do differently, but then I am not as smart as Al Gore so there is a distinct possibility I could be wrong. BUT THE MAN WON!! How do Leiberman and the rest of these "experts" keep forgetting that little point?!?
**********
I am glad to see that there are people like you willing to challenge Bush/Cheney. As with you, I was astounded that the media allowed the Florida voting scandals go uncontested.
Other than Greg Palast I have yet to read a comprehensive review of the company that excluded black voters in FL, set up by Jeb, and a Texas company. Hello!
The NYT blared headlines that Bush won, but deeper in the article it says the truth in fine print.
Would you have the courage to keep the drumbeat up on the missing 18 months of that draft-dodging Bush? I tried to get in the National Guard in 1969 and was laughed off the base. "There are hundreds and thousands ahead of you," they said. Funny, that didn't happen to George. And Cheney draft-dodging?
Anyway, I hope you keep at it, and maybe we'll get things turned around in November and again in 2004. I would like to have a little of my retirement savings left.
Thanks for your fine efforts.

Again - You got it right on the money!! No wonder the "ordinary American" as Boy George calls us is so cynical about politics. Thank You again. St Paul. MN

Ms. Knight--
Thanks for your continued great work, and don't ever think that no one is listening or that your voice is not making a difference. I look forward to your continued thoughtful analysis. In the tradition of Harry Truman, another great Democrat, "Give 'em hell!" Dover, Ohio

You are so right on target with your brilliant article. We need more people like you in this country. It saddens me to see Americans giving bush such a high approval rating. Are they that stupid and sheep-like or is it that the media is making it happen? How can people think the media is liberal? That's the farthest thing from the truth. Just take a look at AM radio. 95% of all talk show hosts are extremely conservative like Limbaugh. Fox news is pathetic. CNN is relatively balanced, but MSNBC is not. The wire services are all right leaning and most papers as well. With 5 major right leaning conglomerate media powerhouses, how can we win? I'm losing hope fast. Al Gore is my hero. I had hope with him and now I question everything. Even whether or not to bring children into this dangerous and polluted world. For me Gore = hope. Bush = anxiety and despair. Since Clinton/Gore left office, the world is a dangerous, more polluted place with things much worse than I've seen in my 32 years. I would quit my job and move to Tennessee just to work for Al Gore if he announced that he's running in 04'. IF we don't win in 04' I'm going to be sickened by this country more than ever. Thanks for your terrific article. ********** AWESOME article!! you got it right on, esp. with Lieberman!! Even tho he was so not-good, WE STILL WON!! Thanks for the great commentary!! Oakland, CA
**********
Thank you for pulling all of this information together. I wasn't aware of the voting problems in Tennessee. I too was amazed at how the press hounded Gore and gave Bush a free pass. Bush's campaign statements must have been the least examined by the press in history.
Once again, you have done us a great service. Your comments are always right on the money.

Dear Rebecca, I am unable to express my joy at finding your column on Buzz. I look forward to my email every day, with relief whenever your column is highlighted. I, too, am a Middle Tennessean (Nashville vicinity) and am overjoyed to find an outspoken female to give the lie to the GOP chestnuts. Thank you, and keep it up for those of us who will not forget. Perhaps our voices may shake the media into some semblance of integrity.

As one Southerner to another, born and raised in MS currently living in FL, I would like you to know how much I enjoyed your article. My heart aches knowing mainstream media has done almost everything within their power to keep the American public in the dark about the 2000 election. Most corporation daily newspapers are full of half-truths and lies cleverly disguised as spin.
The Internet and journalist like yourself are helping keep facts and knowledge available to those of us who thirst for just the simple truth.
Keep up the good work.

Regarding Al Gore, Part II: Election 2004
********** "What a great article. I applaud you!"
**********
Dear Ms. Knight: I am a lifelong democrat who was so outraged by the mind-boggling thievery and the numerous other horrors (including the intervention by the felonious five) that took place before, during, and after the 2000 election, that I've long felt that another Al Gore candidacy would be just too painful to go through again. After reading your very persuasive commentary, I am seriously reconsidering my position. I have often wondered how it was possible for Gore, (after spending eight plus years close to Bill Clinton and watching how effective his "rapid response" team was in deflecting all the shit they threw at him) to choose such a bunch of pathetic and ineffective campaign managers and advisors. I can only hope you're right in believing he's learned from his mistakes, and won't be repeating them.
<snip>
I would support Kermit the Frog if I thought he would rid us of Bush and the gang of thieves and liars he brought with him. Our country and everyone in it, is in such great danger today because of the unbelievably corrupt madmen now in power. Our Constitution has been shredded beyond recognition, we are on the brink of sending our children to die in Iraq because the moron tells us that's the way it's going to be, and where are the Democrats in Congress (who supposedly represent us) on all these issues? Their cowardice has helped bring us to the place where we now find ourselves! I am at the point where I have almost as much contempt for them as I do for the Republicans whose positions are well known. I truly hope you're right about Al Gore's ability to withstand and overcome the Rove/GOP smear and slander operation that they are -- without a doubt -- expanding and refining on a regular basis. If you're wrong, we are in really big trouble... Palm Beach County, Florida
**********
If
Gore was a horse ..you couldn't tear me away from betting on him with
pliers. 7. He's now free to dump that boat anchor, Lieberman. 8. There's more, but fahgitaboutit. Gore wins. San Jose, CA ********** Dear
Rebecca, Thanks
for giving us hope during this time of crises in our country. You're great!! ********** I've enjoyed your various postings and find them very thoughtful. I think you are completely right about Gore. I also have a suggestion for a campaign slogan for 2004: "Bring back Democracy." Gore, by the way, needs to confront that election (2000) and its problems head on. Raleigh, NC ********** The World knows the truth, and Gore won and he will win again in 2004, if we mind the store. ********** another master piece.....now on to gore in 2004.......nixon did it...... ********** Dear Rebecca.........I TOTALLY agree with you on the fact that Gore should run again. If he meant what he said about throwing away the script and shooting from the hip, I feel sure he can win. And of course the media will continue to persecute him, but this time, Al Gore should challenge EVERYTHING they say to denigrate him. He should have done this last time. I never understood why he didn't. Maybe he was badly advised?? ********** Dear Rebecca, The article you wrote about Al almost made me cry. Mainly because what you wrote is EVERYTHING I have been thinking but could not possibly put into words! There are MANY people across America I am sure that feel the way you and I do. Our voices need to be heard. It has been such a mystery to me why the media picked on Al Gore mainly because of his intelligence. Oh sure, he might not be an actor who can charm the crowd, but no matter what his style, he is an honest and sincere man. I could talk for hours about Al Gore and the theft of the presidency, the republican tactics, etc., etc., but it raises my blood pressure dangerously. ********** How I wish you were my friend. YOU are definitely LOYAL. It's too bad he did not have people as committed as you are working with him during his last campaign. You write very well and you raise some very good points, but. . . . Do you think Al Gore has it in him to say that the next time . . . Bush won't have Scalia & Company to intervene for him? And when the press jumps all over him for that, he takes them on too, telling it as it is. I suppose then will I believe that Gore is a changed man. MY COMMENT: I agree that if Gore is not committed to speaking out, he should not run again! ********** Rebecca, ********** A Vice Presidential candidate for Al Gore is a problem!!! My first choice would be Eleanor Holmes Norton .. but I don't think that would be a winning ticket. I am not African American but I have worked with some of the African American Democratic leaders in Memphis politics and I know that they can be as chauvinist as any white man. So Ms. Norton may not carry the African American male vote. My second choice was John Kerry .. then I found out that he was a member of the DLC. I really liked Kucinich's 'Prayer for America' - thought it was beautifully written. However, Kucinich is anti choice .. so he is not my choice. The VP is a difficult question. MY COMMENT: Yes, Gore would definitely need a different vice presidential candidate. Any suggestions? ********** Go Al Go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Georgetown, Texas ********** Dear Ms. Knight, Let me begin by saying how much I enjoy your columns that appear regularly in BuzzFlash. Regarding your recent columns on Al Gore as the 2004 Democratic nominee, I agree wholeheartedly with your analysis. Since Gore has already proven that he can defeat George Bush, the question is "Can he beat him again?" The obvious answer is "Yes." The Gore campaign question in 2004 will be "Are we better off now than we were 4 years ago." In any measure of "better off," the response is a resounding "NO!" W's lies from his 2000 campaign and his pathetic presidency will be easily exploited. Bush's dismal record will be the target instead of Clinton's morals. Gore can go on the offensive instead of being on the defensive. In a rerun election in 2004, my thought is that Gore would hang onto the vast majority of his 2000 voters (why would they switch?) and gain significantly from both the Bush and Green columns. I have to believe that a huge number of Bush supporters from 2000 (the moderate swing voters) have realized that they were sucked in by Bush and his election lies and would move to Gore's column. Certainly, the Greens can now see the clear difference between the 2 major candidates and many would support Gore. The end result would be a significant Gore victory in a 2004 rematch. Can we make that prediction for any other potential Democratic candidate? Again, the answer is "no." Why should the Democrats take a chance with anyone else when the stakes are so high? It is a no-brainer... GORE IN 2004!! Midland, MI ********** This I know .. if Leiberman (or any other member of the DLC) gains the democratic party nomination I will vote green... i had to hold my nose to vote for Gore with Leiberman on the ticket.. 1) Leiberman's attacks on Bill Clinton were way out of line. 2) Leiberman was/is a fundamentalist .. religious fundamentalism be it Baptist, Methodist, catholic, Muslim, Jew, whatever .. is someone with a screw loose. 3) Leiberman was one of the first to tell Gore to concede in Florida. 4) Leiberman was the one who would not allow Al Gore to be Al Gore in the 2000 presidential election .. Leiberman advised Gore to keep his distance from Clinton and talked Gore into taking the centrist path. 5) Gore was correct to avoid the DLC meeting .. there values are not the values of the Democratic Party. Leiberman should move over to the repucklickkkan party where he belongs. Germantown TN ********** I read your BuzzFlash editorial. IF Gore does get the nomination in 2004, he has got to make a better choice for VP candidate than Lieberman. A VP candidate has to be a forceful spokesperson to set the record straight. The VP candidate can attack the GOP campaign and allow the presidential candidate to remain above the fray. Lieberman did not do this and even worse, in the VP debate he agreed with Cheney most of the time. This only reinforced the Nader charge that there was no difference between the GOP and Dems. Lieberman could have slammed the Bush campaign and the press corp for their lies about Gore but he did not. For 2004, Lieberman is too closely tied to business interests that have brought the ire of the independent voters. Quite frankly, a large part of the outcome will depend on the economy. If Bush can pull a rabbit out of the hat, he will be hard to beat. Overlooked in your analysis of why the 2000 race was so close was due to economic jolts from energy prices and high interest rates. There is no doubt that Bush can be beaten. Gore needs to rethink everything especially the VP choice. A few swings at the press a la Bush41 vs Dan Rather would not hurt either. ********** Hi
Rebecca, I do think that if Al feels that freedom is having nothing left to lose and therefor he will run from deep in his heart and as a populist, which I certainly hope he now is, then he does stand the best chance and will be the best candidate. The Dems have to really come out swinging and kick serious truthful GOP ass. And they have to bind together and speak collectively and loudly the truth and not let the GOP continue to frame the debate as your either with us or against us.... I was constantly disappointed by Al Gore and the rest of the Dems for not standing with Clinton, they really left him to twist in the wind and yet he still managed to bring down most of his GOP opponents using brilliant Kung Fu.... MY COMMENT: I agree that it was frustrating watching the Gore camp fail miserably at rapid response to the smear tactics of the Repubs. Gore would have to hire stronger advisers for 2004 – no doubt about it! I recommend James Carville and Paul Begala. ********** Thank you so much for such a great presentation on Why Gore Should Run - I'm sure he will. And you are right = the Republicans are very much afraid of his running - you could say they are running scared, putting out all the usual anti-hype they can muster. ********** And wouldn't Gore's just being there every day, on TV, plugging away, be a reminder of how the election was stolen? Wouldn't that be a constant embarrassment (if they were embarrassable) to Republicans? And as the mainstream media just can't seem to get away from repeating conventional wisdom, wouldn't their reporters point out, each and every instance, that Gore won the popular vote last time? Thanks for your efforts; I love your stuff. Austin, Texas ********** Rebecca, ********** Dear Rebecca, First off, I'd like to say thanks for setting the record on Al Gore straight. Tragically, the US media have become as corrupt and self-serving (too many "brie and chablis" food give-aways, methinks...and they won't bite the hand, etc...) as our US government. Naturally, as a Democrat, I cut our side some slack. I can't help but imagine how different our situation, and the situation, of the world would be if Al Gore had been given his rightfully won Presidency. Right after the election, two reporters from Germany, were interviewed in Los Angeles, and they said that in Europe, Al Gore would have taken 85 percent of the vote. 85 percent! And as for Bush's childish and oft-proclaimed "We (Americans) are the envy of the world...", what balderdash. Does any advanced, civilized nation in the world envy us? Does France? Does Germany? Does England? Does Spain? Does Norway? Sweden? Italy?...Of course not! Only in madness of the Bush mind, are we envied. Western Europe has a superior economy, a superior transportation system, a superior social safety-net system (because they recognize the flaws inherent in a modern, mixed and increasingly "automated, robotized" industrial economy), and more. Gore would have taken us to a new level of civilization. Bush is has "re-Freonized" the Cold War, and is intent on taking us back to a re-feudalized (read: corporations as fiefdoms) way of life. The real horror of Election 2000, is that the true forces of evil were able to cancel out, through fraud and deceit, the will of the American people. This rigged victory will only embolden these individuals to try again, the same tactics that they used to achieve political power in 2000. Gore should be the Democratic candidate in 2004, but we can't put him out there as a punching bag for the press and the media. I know. I've worked in broadcast TV and in the press (reporter, photog, cartoonist) and ever since the FCC "deregulated" and dumped the Fairness Doctrine, things have gotten increasingly right-wing, to which, at this point we might as well stop using the term "Free Press". If Gore is to be the 2004 candidate of the Democratic Party, it will be up to the "grass-roots" to run interference for him against the US media. I believe with the Internet and a very vocal, public presence, we can do this. Well, 'nuff said. Thanks for your writing... San Diego, CA ********** Right on!!! If Mr. Gore decides to run, and it appears that he will, the next big question will be whom he selects for a running mate. I hope he has had enough of the DLC guy from the last campaign. Instead, he should choose a dynamo like Sen. Paul Wellstone. What an exciting campaign that would be! Do you have any thoughts on a running mate for Mr. Gore? MY COMMENT: I agree it should not be Lieberman again. I would like Kucinich if he was pro-choice, but alas he is not. My fantasy ticket would be Gore/Richards – yes, Ann Richards! But sadly, Ann would need to be about 20 years younger. Can you just imagine Ann on the campaign trail with all the ammunition she has on Bush?!?! Wellstone might be a good choice. ********** Dear Ms. Knight; I believe there were 3 additional problems to the lack of accurate media coverage in the 2000 race: 1) The managers of the Democratic Party seemed to harbor much anger regarding Pres. Clinton's behavior, radically affecting their energy for a Gore campaign. For the good of America and the international community, will they be able to put these feelings aside in 2004? 2) The managers of the Democratic Party were focused on Senator Hillary Clinton's campaign - thus distracting them from the much larger office. This should not be a problem in 2004, unless they allow themselves to be distracted by someone else... or another Hillary campaign. 3) The financial state of the Gore campaign only began to close the donation gap following the selection of Lieberman as Vice-president... how would Gore remedy this problem? I believe you make excellent points of argument for another run, and I agree that Al Gore would be much healthier for the nation, but we all must realize that, without the full cooperation and enthusiasm of the managers of the party, Al Gore, simply stated, will not be president. MY COMMENT: These are the points I tried to make. For the Democratic Party and Al Gore to take the country by storm, we must be united! ********** Great article!!! I agree totally!!! The best thing that could happen to this country right now is if Al Gore would announce his run for 2004 and have every Democrat back him without opposition of any kind. I may be dreaming but just think about it. Has it ever happened before? No need for any primaries. Just think of the mainstream news media going bonkers trying to figure out what is happening!!!!! They would have to report something positive about the guy. It would be a coup against the repugnant party. Thanks again for all your good writing. God bless you. MY COMMENT: These are my sentiments exactly! The pugs would certainly get their knickers in a knot! ********** Okay, Al, the people are speaking! Are you listening? Is the Democratic Party listening?
