Al Gore and the Democratic Leadership Council

MS. SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON
by Shirley Smith

Thinking about something said in the Mailbag ... even though I know Gore took part in the forming of the DLC ... I never get the same dislocated, throat-tightening, hot flushed feeling of the need for fresh air from Gore that I get from other DLC members and of their leadership. Gore is different ... and, I don't understand why people can't see that ... all they have to do is compare what he says and how he feels about government with how those DLC leaders feel about government and how some of their members keep voting and supporting the treasonous Bush GOP. To me, Gore has always been someone who looked to the future, and his past stands as a record of that.

I don't see Gore following the directions of today's DLC, even if he were in that special club today. Gore stated everything wrong in DC with all three branches of government. He was down to earth, very plain spoken and he sounded like the leader that we haven't had in five long, deadly years.

Maybe the concept of the DLC was okay in its day, but the results have been devastating to the Democratic party, and yet, out of all that rubble, I can still picture the DLC sitting safely inside a gigantic rainbow colored bubble.

No wonder Gore's speech was not hailed by the DLC, and shame on the DNC, but we will not have the true leadership from the DNC until it is out from under the control of those in the DLC. They want house parties during Bush's speech and yet, don't mention this profound speech by Gore, which was full of the truths that should have been said by those who work for the American people months and months ago.

Maybe I'm missing the point knowing that they want to sit and listen and discuss a treasonous president's message for god only knows what reason. Why do I say that? Because, anyone who has committed treason in office, the expectations of anything good ever coming out of that office is nil. Whatever Bush says will not be worth the paper it's written on or worth the time of any discussion. He is a liar, a criminal, and has committed treason to this country and he should be on leave from his duties.

Could it be that the DLC and the DNC "know" what they should be doing, and haven't been doing, exactly what Gore was doing by speaking out? Gore spoke like a leader when the leadership of the Democratic Party has been silent or complicit with this shell of a government that is controlled by the Bush GOP, and when Dean speaks out, he gets criticized by those same members of the DLC. I can't hold Dean responsible for what the DLC is really responsible for, and that is some sort of code of silence when it comes to Bush ... at least the pattern is still there because, when it comes to Gore, they have also remained bipartisan with that code of silence.

The last thing we need is silence. A Congress who is supposed to be part of the checks and balances of the Executive branch of US government, and we can't hear them, yet, that's their job. We need members in congress who are willing to talk a lot. We don't need members in Congress who want to draw good pay, benefits, perks and do nothing when we have a government running amuck.

Just a thought,
