| Margaret Cho, The Assassin Tour BUZZFLASH REVIEWS
This is Margaret's "Assassin" tour, which the BuzzFlash editor had the pleasure of seeing in Chicago just a short time ago. All we can say is that we totally agree with the headline of the show's review in the Chicago Tribune, " Margaret Cho packs passion into each punch." The Chicago Tribune went on to lavish praise on Cho's performance: Displaying a more aggressive political bent than in past shows, comic Margaret Cho scorched the right without toning down her naughty nature Friday at the Chicago Theatre. Pope John Paul II, George Bush, Christian groups--the 36-year-old didn't leave a conservative stone unturned. "You know things are bad politically when you reminisce about how good Ronald Reagan was," said Cho, who also appreciated red-state/blue-state maps that show "where all the stupid people are." Cho, a comic for 20 years, didn't shy away from controversial topics. Wondering how conservative religious outfits, with their constant protesting, have time for anything else, she asked: "Shouldn't you be preparing for the Rapture?" Cho displayed the trademarks that have been keys to her success: the array of characters and voices, facial expressions that punctuate many of her gags and finely crafted jokes that were almost elegant in their simplicity. BuzzFlash too noted the increased political intensity of Cho's performance. She's the comic antidote to the right wing and one of the edgiest comics around. But she also smoothly segues into riotous send-ups of her mother lecturing her in a Korean-American accent and XXX tales of politically incorrect sexual encounters. By the time the show was over, we wanted to tie a rope around Rick Santorum and force him to sit in the front row. Cho's energy is unflagging. There's never a moment you start looking at your watch, because you might miss the next outrageous one liner or facial contortion. Nothing is out of bounds to Cho. She's a one-woman cultural comedy revolution. She won't be performing at the White House anytime soon, you can be sure. BUZZFLASH REVIEWS |
