Why Wasn't the Book Thrown at the Future Librarian?
by Tony Peyser

When Laura Bush was Laura Welch
Back in 1963
She was involved in a fatal car crash
And walked away scot-free.

She didn't see the stop sign
That was clearly posted there
And plowed into a teenage boy
Who was driving a Corvair.

A spokesman said Mrs. Bush remains
" Unable" to discuss this killing
He got the "un" part right but
It's more like she's "unwilling."

Laura's car speed was illegible
On that Texas police report
No charges were ever filed
No need to appear in court.

One wonders if the Fates would have
Been so providential
If her family then in Midland
Had not been so influential.

Laura and George were destined
To get each other's addresses:
They both had dads who knew how
To clean up their reckless messes.

No matter how you spin this,
The bottom line ain't good
And disqualifies this First Lady
From any kind of sainthood.
