Subj: More Florida Mess

Dear BuzzFlash,

The "sexy" Paula Zahn on CNN just reported that over 100,000 votes in Broward county have not yet been counted.... gee what a shocker-

What's next, we will find out that 100,000 votes were counted in Tallahassee from people that didn't count- the turnout in the panhandle was even higher than it was during the presidential election....

Subj: The Democratic Party

Dear BuzzFlash,

The Democratic Party deserves exactly what they got. They never had the courage to stand up to Bush from the beginning. After he was selected by the Supreme Court to be "president", several black congressional leaders stood up to challenge his selection, before he was officially declared "president" by Al Gore in Congress. They only needed one senator to stand up for them to challenge his appointment, but not one did. Why didn't they protest Tom DeLay's brown-shirted thugs shutting down the vote count in Miami? Would the Repugs not be screaming like stuck pigs if the tables were turned?

Russell Feingold's vote allowed us to be saddled with the Gestapo tactics of John Ashcroft as Atty. Gen. Have any of the Democrats fought for an independent investigation of 9/11? After it was discovered that Bush was informed of many threats and did nothing, they should have been out there every day demanding to know why. They came out of their corners for one day and spoke out. Bush sent his team of Rice, Cheney, etc. to the Sunday talk shows and they went meekly back to their corners.

Over a year now since 9/11 and they have done virtually nothing. Now, any objective investigation will be conveniently swept under the rug by the Republican-controlled Congress. Bush will never have to answer to the death of almost 3000 people.

Several Democrats voted for Bush's tax cut for the rich, but the vote for the war in Iraq was their total demise. A couple of them asked, "Why now?", when the answer was so obvious. But they, too fell in line and voted for the U.S. to preemptively strike another country --- in essence, making us a terrorist nation. Didn't they hear the people of this country saying we did not want a war? There were massive protest marches, overwhelming e-mails, telephone calls and letters to them saying NO. Sen. Byrd Sen. Wellstone, Sen Boxer and Rep. Dennis Kucinich were one of the few to speak out against the war.

What about Harken and Halliburton? Look what the Repugs did to Clinton over Whitewater and there was nothing there. $70 million of taxpayer money for NOTHING but a consensual sexual affair between 2 adults. What about Rudy Giuliani, Tim Hutchison, Newt Gingrich, Henry Hyde, Dan Burton, etc.'s affairs? Do we hear any voices of outrage from the Democrats? Not a peep!!!!!

There is a long list of atrocities they should have spoken out against, from the environment to social issues to the economy, but they remained silent. And now not just the U.S., but the world will suffer under the Bush junta. It's been said before, but it bears repeating ----- Heaven help us all!!!!!!!

Had a few items I thought might be perfect for BuzzFlash:

1) http://www.MarkGreen.com: From Mark Green, former Public Advocate in NYC, and the fellow who recently ran against Mike Bloomberg (and got outspent by $60 million!). He's got a new book launching this week, "Selling Out," all about campaign reform, and has free samples on his site. He's also revving up a new effort, "The New Democracy Project."

2) http://www.OpenTheBooks.com: Just launched today, following up on the article in the WSJ re: the new revelations about Bush's Enron-like dealings while at Harken (article is on this site, if you've not yet seen it). This is a petition calling on Harvey Pitt to re-open the case, and make the files public -- as he said he would if there was "new evidence." (great info on their re: statements from Pitt and the President, specific to this)

3) http://www.CorporateTraitors.com: A new effort from Progressive Majority, to slap back at corporations that set up sham headquarters in Bermuda and other havens to avoid taxes. We've got a petition up, and for each signature --- we are sending a pair of BERMUDA SHORTS to the President...

4) http://www.theretheygoagain.com: Great new site dealing with corporations raiding pension funds of normal Joes and Janes, and what we can do about it.

And thanks for your time and consideration on these.

Dear BuzzFlash,

I spent several hours surfing around the home pages of our Repugnant Senators. I created the attached chart that shows what I found out about their military service. Interesting, that only a handful appear to have served any branch of the military...I made the assumption if the web page had no information on military service, the senator did not serve. Those who did serve seemed proud to have it prominently displayed. Be sure to check out Christopher Bond - That's a real hoot. You should visit his web page.

Subj: We need to come out from the Underground.

Dear BuzzFlash,

As a political liberal who hails back from the sixties, I watched the elections with particular horror. It is inconceivable to me that the American public has just given free reign to a unintelligent puppet of the oil, banking, and energy industries. Despite the well meaning attempts by modern day liberals and democrats to voice dissent and educate the public as to the evils of the Bush Administration, we failed miserably. One reason is that our dissent and opinions are BURIED with websites such as BUZZFLASH. Mainstream Americans do not surf the web for politically liberal ideas, liberals surf the web for liberal websites. In order to push a liberal agenda we must be seen and heard by all Americans, in the same manner as cable news stations spewing pro-Bush propaganda. BUZZFLASH is one of the best liberal websites, if it were in print as a weekly paper and distributed across the country more people would be enlightened as to what is and is not , in their best interest. Dissenting protesters ended the Vietnam War in the late 60's and early 70's because we had brought our discontent and outrage to the streets. We handed out flyers in all neighborhoods of all cities. We organized protests on all college campus's. We had underground newspapers that were distributed free of charge in Chicago's loop at rush hour. We had grassroots leaders, Angela Davis, Abbie Hoffman, Bernadine Dorhn, and Jane Fonda who agitated and pushed and hollered. We were visible and our voices were heard for free, it was not necessary to purchase a $25.00 book to become aware of threats to our freedoms. When we sent letters to Senators and Congressman they appeared physically, jamming mailrooms and causing problems for legislators because of the bulk. They were not mere emails that could be deleted or ignored altogether. We got the message across, and the result was that the majority of mainstream American voters embraced our cause. I doubt George W. Bush would have gotten this far back then. If Ari Fleisher had stood in front of the White House in 1969 and said as he said a few months ago " Americans need to watch what they say and do," we would have cleaned his clock.

Subj: Spin

Dear BuzzFlash,

Why don't we fight the Republicans with their own rules? They have a candidate who is not very bright, knows how to wink and nod, they say he is charming. The most popular Republican inhabitants of the White House have been a B-grade actor and GWB They don't run the country or make decisions, they do what they are told by their handlers.

Seems as if a huge portion of America doesn't see a smirking, lying slime ball that 30% of us see. It seems as if the majority of America doesn't read the information that's out there and has become addicted to 10 sec sound bites, Fox News and Rush Limbaugh. Instead of the Dems looking for a candidate of substance, they need to find a charming, handsome/beautiful candidate who can memorize their lines and deliver them beautifully and humbly written by their handlers. Someone who has a high Emotional IQ which includes sincerity and just the right touch of humility, and is happy to serve as long as they can travel in Air Force One. Someone like that would make GWB look like the insincere twit he is in a New York Minute.

I am dead serious about this, they cannot be too young or too old. If it's Marketing Spin the majority relate to, let's do some marketing. Tom Hanks would be perfect, Morgan Freeman, he played a really believable President in a movie, Denzel Washington, someone who makes the young women feel safe and heart flutters when he talks and smiles, and someone who the young men feel comfortable with, I haven't looked at all the politicians we have, but there might be someone there. Good voice, right smile, give the people what they want. The people want "The Candidate."

Subj: Gephardt Gone

[Cc: democratic.caucus@mail.house.gov]

So Dick Gephardt is not standing for speaker again. Good riddance. He can't articulate an idea coherently, he doesn't have the cojones to grab the microphone from people -- even when they are telling lies to his face. When the going gets tough, Gephardt immediately rolls over and exposes his belly. He did so with Gingrich, and he just did it to us again. He needs to go back home and get a job more attuned to his personality -- perhaps as a professional oatmeal taster.

Now we have Martin Frost in the running, Mr. Personality, talking about "moving the Democrats towards the center." Riiiiight. I'd LOVE to see that. The year 2002 Democratic Party has so lost their way that they are to the political right of Richard Nixon!! (Look at the record, people.) Let's see the Democratic Party move PAST the center, to the left of the center, and start representing their base. Maybe in the next election, that base might actually come out and vote -- if they are given a reason.

-=-

Note to the Party: Stop watching your worthless tracking polls, stop pretending that bellicose lying criminals are statesmen, and start CREATING and ARTICULATING the public issues. It's simple.

Be the opposition, you incompetent cowards. IT IS NOT YOUR JOB TO BE "LESS REPUBLICAN!"

Just tell the truth about the Republican Party. Got that? There is your talking point for the next two years.

That's about $40 million worth of Pinstriped Political Consultation. You can forward the check to BuzzFlash with my compliments.

I will NOT become less angry,

Randy Kirchhof

Universal Military Training and Service Act of 2001 - Makes it the obligation of male citizens and residents between 18 and 22 to receive basic military training and education as a member of the armed forces unless otherwise exempt under this Act. Permits female citizens and residents between such ages to volunteer for enlistment in the armed forces, with acceptance at the discretion of the Secretary of the military department concerned. Limits the period of training to between six months and a year. Permits transfers after basic training of such conscripts/volunteers to national and community service programs to finish the term of service. Provides educational services and Montgomery GI benefits to persons upon completion of their national service.

Uses the existing Selective Service System and local boards for induction. Sets forth criteria for deferments, postponements, and exemptions, including high school, hardship, disability, and health.

Entitles inductees to request a particular service branch. Excludes conscientious objectors from combatant training, but otherwise requires them to take basic training before a permitted transfer to a national service program.

Subj: A Letter from Salon

Dear BuzzFlash,

There is a fine letter to the editors of Salon today, published in response to Joe Conason's great commentary yesterday. Here is the letter, in case you missed it:

The wrong time to attack Bush

Conason's theory that the GOP made gains because Democrats were unwilling to criticize President Bush just doesn't wash. In fact, voters have been bombarded for the past two years with little else: "Illiterate," "born to wealth," "out of touch with 'Real Americans,'" "unilateralist," "appointed, not elected."

In fact, I can't think of anything positive Democrats did say about Bush. So, just for the sake of argument, let's consider a contrarian possibility: that unrelenting personal attacks on the president, in a time of national crisis, may have drawn the voters to him and the GOP. You'll have to admit, it's at least a possibility.

While we're at it, let's also look at recent Democrat campaign positions.

1. Agree that we must fight terrorism, but delay intervention in Iraq through obfuscation.

2. Call for an end to dependence on foreign oil, but vote against drilling in Alaska.

3. Point out that workers deserve a higher standard of living, but vote against tax cuts.

4. Warm the cockles of retirees' hearts by assuring them you're for retirement security, but campaign against Social Security reform.

5. Agree that our kids deserve better education, but don't permit even the mildest test of school vouchers.

Democrats refer to their party as "the big tent" where everyone is welcome. They should recall that "the big tent" was popularized by P.T. Barnum. His motto: "There's a sucker born every minute." I think yesterday's election results show that, when it comes to contradictory messages, people are less likely to be suckered these days.

-- Rich Black

Why do I think this is a great letter? Because it so succinctly distills the GOP positions into easily refuted nuggets. If only the Democrats had had this letter, they could have used it as the template for attacking the lies of the GOP.

Here are the lies, and how easily they are refuted:

"voters have been bombarded for the past two years with little else" - In what bizarro world has this happened? We have been bombarded with Churchillian, statesman, great leader. Only on liberal websites and comedy programs is the truth of Bush's idiocy openly discussed. Meet the Press and the NBC Nightly News has considered the topic of Bush's lack of presidential qualifications off limits.

"in a time of national crisis" - Please show me this current national crisis that presents so great a danger. The current national crisis - the tanking economy - is the product of the individual being criticized.

"1. Agree that we must fight terrorism, but delay intervention in Iraq through obfuscation." - There is no link between terrorism and Iraq. There is, however, a direct link between Iraqi oil reserves and the future wealth of the president's strongest supporters.

"2. Call for an end to dependence on foreign oil, but vote against drilling in Alaska." - Drilling for oil in Alaska will not in any way reduce our dependence on foreign oil. It will, however, make money for the president's strongest supporters.

"3. Point out that workers deserve a higher standard of living, but vote against tax cuts." - Workers do not receive the benefit of Bush's tax cut, only the very wealthy - the president's strongest supporters.

"4. Warm the cockles of retirees' hearts by assuring them you're for retirement security, but campaign against Social Security reform." - The Republican ideas about Social Security 'reform' are in direct opposition to the concept of retirement security. They are instead about funneling the retirement dollars of retirees into the pockets of brokers and accountants, some of the president's strongest supporters, when they aren't doing the perp walk.

"5. Agree that our kids deserve better education, but don't permit even the mildest test of school vouchers." - School vouchers will benefit only the lucky few who are able to get their children into private schools that have no federally mandated obligation to open their doors equally and equitably. School vouchers are all about getting white kids out of black schools and into religiously-funded all-white academies and for-profit schools, both of which are run by (all together now) the president's strongest supporters.

These five points were what the Republicans ran on. These were their debate points, and their arguments rely on assumptions established through repetition of assertions until they are accepted as fact. This election cycle began a decade ago when they began beating these drums, to establish these 'facts' in the minds of the electorate. Remarkably, the Democrats failed to adequately challenge even one of them.

I suppose that would make too much sense, wouldn't it?

But simply refuting statements isn't enough, and therein lies the source of the Democrats ultimate failure. Therefore, I propose:

1. We fight terrorism by fighting the causes of terrorism - greed, injustice, hunger, disease, fear, and ignorance.

2. End our suicidal strategic dependence on foreign oil by aggressively pursuing renewable energy sources. The military should be leading the way in this research, since a tank or plane that never needs refueling would give them a distinct advantage on any battlefield.

3. Provide workers with a higher standard of living by cutting their taxes and paying for these tax cuts by ending the flow of corporate and personal welfare to the wealthiest businesses and billionaires, and by accounting for all the spending that goes on in government, especially the looting of the federal treasury at the Pentagon and HUD.

4. Warm the hearts of everyone by providing universal healthcare and retirement security not subject to the vagaries of the stock market and capitalism, and secure from the rapacious greed of lawmakers, CEOs and unelected executives.

5. Provide education reform by ending the idiotic system of local taxpayer based funding for local schools. The educational future of a child should not be subject to the whims of birth and poverty. All children should have the same chance, and so all schools must be funded from a national taxpayer base.

Jeff

Dear BuzzFlash,

Now that the GOP has control of Congress, you can bet there won't be any independent investigation of 9/11. At least not any meaningful one. The Bush junta simply won't allow it.

And curiously, CBS reported Nov. 6th that the Justice Department might drop its prosecution of alleged conspirator Zacarias Moussaoui. Apparently, Moussaoui has indicated he will request access to the guy they nabbed in Pakistan who claimed on Al Jezeera TV to have helped orchestrate the plot. It is doubtful that such access would ever be granted by the military, which now holds the potential witness. Herr Ashcroft is supposedly concerned that this restriction might preclude a fair trial. (Yeah, right.) Thus, the thinking goes, it might be better that the Justice Department drop its case and have the whole matter moved into a secret, military tribunal.

Which is what they probably want anyway, and what will probably happen. Moussaoui may never be tried in public. His trial could generate too many inconvenient questions that the Administration won't want asked. For instance, if they have sufficient evidence linking him to the 9/11 hijackers, when did they get it? Could they have collected that evidence before 9/11 while he was in custody? Could the conspiracy have been unraveled? Could the conspirators' "cover" have been blown? Why did FBI headquarters repeatedly suppress an agent's desperate pleas for a routine warrant to search Moussaoui's things?

Of course, the mainstream press can be counted on to ignore the most important question of our time: was 9/11 allowed to happen?

Subj: Where Are We Now?

Dear BuzzFlash,

Democrats are at a point where Bush has laid down the law. You are either with them or you are an enemy. Americans are so weak minded that they will become Republicans as to not be the one left on the sidelines. Even last night on Leno, there were people afraid to applaud Bill Maher, you know him the dissenter that lost his job. Americans are afraid of the Bush Junta. Note how Wellstone has been wiped from memory. Any why did they make his best friend apologize. Note to Democrats: Republicans NEVER admit they are wrong or issue an Atta boy to the opposition NEVER. You need to learn that one lesson. That is the one thing I hate about Republicans - only Republicans get Republican praise. And for a person to be so petty that they cannot praise another because of party affiliation, there must be some more serious mental flaws.

Subj: Election Results

Dear BuzzFlash,

For what it's worth, here's why I am very burned up about the election results. I keep thinking of Gephardt's standing shoulder to shoulder with Bush in the Rose Garden regarding the "war on terrorism". The Democrats did not even try to put forth a populist message. When faced with a choice between the Republicans and the me-too Democrats, people went with the candidates with the firm message. What was with all of the timidity during this campaign? The Democrats lost anyway---would they have lost BY EVEN MORE if they had had some balls and stood up and fought this man toe-to-toe? I doubt it. I'd rather see us go down fighting than to go down whimpering like a bunch of sob sisters. God Bless Paul Wellstone---he would have fought these people until hell froze over, and then he would have fought them on ice (to paraphrase Churchill). Gephardt is making noises about running for President. He'll never get my vote in a million years. We had so much to work with, given the Enron situation, a crashing economy, job loss, and historical precedents. We blew it. Granted, I know the Democrats will always be outgunned and outspent by the Republicans, but still, why spend your money on tepid little "me too" messages?

Don Russo

Subj: It's Dead and Gone

Dear BuzzFlash,

I think that Democracy is dead. The Republicans not only control the White House, the Senate, the House of Representatives, the Supreme Court, the Federal Judiciary, but they also control about 99.9% of the mainstream print, broadcast, and cable media (they own mediawhores like Tim Russert, George Will, etc.), and now the new voting machines that are coming into use are made by and serviced by right wing Republicans. They can control what messages the uninformed, ignorant masses are hearing (and not hearing), and they can control what the voting machines say is the count.

They will never willingly relinquish the enormous power they have amassed through money, lies, cheating, possibly murder.

The past two elections have meant the end of Democracy. First, in 2000, they put into the White House the man the voters did NOT choose as president, and now they have completed their grab at total control. Who knows for whom the voters ACTUALLY voted on Tuesday? For instance, the polls, consistently in the weeks leading up to the election, had such individuals as Shaheen in New Hampshire ahead, but she was "defeated" by Republican Sununu. Or was she? With Ashcroft in charge of Justice, and Republicans in charge of more and more of the voting machines, we will never know whom the VOTERS really elected.

Yes, I know, I sound like one of those conspiracy nuts.

Joann Olbrich

Dear BuzzFlash,

I just wanted to implore people to start writing, calling (basically harassing) the mainstream media news outlets. They are so complicit in all of this. It's not possible to have a democracy without an independent and non-biased media. We have no voice now whatsoever. They need to know that we're very angry, and not just at the Bush administration. I've sent an email (a way too long one - I just couldn't stop) to most of the mainstream network news programs basically asking them why they've stopped reporting the news. It's as if they all work for the Bush administration. There is absolutely no investigative reporting anymore (like there was with the Clinton administration!!). The American public is among the most uninformed in the world - yet we are a democracy?! So all of you articulate, angry BuzzFlashers, please, please start complaining to the media. I think we should absolutely bombard them.

Subj: March Against the Media

Dear BuzzFlash,

I think Rob Moitoza's idea is a good one. The media has failed the average American. They created Dubya. We need to keep them in line. A coordinated protest against the major media outlets and newspapers might get us some air time. We need to get out and make our feelings known over the next two years through demonstrations, boycotts and bumper stickers. We can't afford to be intimidated by fascists replutocans and the GOP accommodating news media.

Subj: Harvey Pitt

Dear BuzzFlash,

BuzzFlash has allowed Republican strategy and maneuvering to go unnoticed. I refer to the resignation of Harvey Pitt cleverly carried out in the midst of election night. Where are the articles and headlines about Harvey Pitt? His resignation is a symptom of a terrible disease, yet it has passed virtually without comment. And is this not a victory, although a small one. What of the administration that promised "not even the hint of impropriety?" Something reeks in D.C. and it should be proclaimed loudly at every indication by every freedom loving group in the land.

Although this email is a criticism, I have the highest regard for BuzzFlash and read it devotedly. Keep up the great work and keep that Progressive Standard flying high!

Subj: open letter to the Democrats in DC

To the Democrats in Congress and the Senate,

It is time to formulate a mission for the Democratic Party. You must take a stand on what the party is ABOUT. We were beaten by the Republican Party because they have a well defined plan for the future of the United States and the world. One that must be opposed with as much political power as we can muster.

Our mission has to be about where the Democratic Party is headed and how we plan to get there. The ways of dealing with the issues in the past no longer serve the party or the people of this country.

It must also be diametrically opposed to the Republican plan of world supremacy.

I am a Democrat because I believe down to my very bones that humanity can save itself and the planet. I believe that all people are the same in their aspirations, in their pain, their suffering, their joys and ability to love. That a different religion, or nationality or language do not make us fundamentally different.

Where the Bush "mandate" is to go to war with Iraq, the Democratic plan must oppose any and all wars that are waged for domination of the natural resources of the planet.

Where Bush's "mandate" is to ignore the UN and threaten the world with unilateral strikes to force regime change at his party's whim, the Democratic party goal should be to support the UN and make it's humane mission of peace and prosperity a reality in the world.

Where Bush's "mandate" is to dominate the oil supplies of the world and to make his supporters richer in the process, the Democratic Party should make it a goal to find alternate sources of fuel and energy. If we can go to the moon because there was a deliberate and concerted effort by the government to fund the space program, then we can find clean and renewable energy.

While Bush thumbs his nose at the environment, the Democratic Party should have a plan ready to be implemented to deliberately reverse the effects of the damage that is happening to the planet. As just one example, the US can lead the world in stopping the ever spreading fires in the Amazon rain forest. It is something that can be done easily if there is worldwide determination.

Where Bush's "vision" is to make the rich richer and to destroy the middle class in the process, the Democratic Party should have a plan and the goal to give all the people the power to lift themselves out of poverty. It can start by raising the minimum wage to a living wage. By taking education seriously instead of using it only as a campaigning issue which too often ends up being an empty promise. Good schools in the poorest districts of our country and the world will teach the smartest and the best who would otherwise live a life of poverty and misery. Intelligence and genius are not the sole property of the rich.

In the 21st century humanity has arrived at that point in our history and in our evolution where we have to be consciously accountable for the state of the planet and all the people on it. Ignorance of how we pollute and destroy the planet is no longer an excuse.

To all the Democratic representatives in Washington, I urge you to get behind closed doors and formulate a comprehensive plan that will define the party in a clear and definite way. And I suggest that you remember to listen to your constituents.

Subj: I was a poll watcher in Texas

Dear BuzzFlash,

I was a poll watcher at Precinct 314 on Tuesday. The election judge was a republican and the alternate election judge claimed to be a democrat, but the alternate judge was the one who was making it difficult if not impossible for many minorities to vote who were registered voters and had previously voted in that precinct as recently as the Democratic primary in April but due to redistricting were now in other precincts.

99% of the voters he sent to other precincts were Blacks and Hispanics and until I intervened, those voters were not provided with the address and directions to their new precinct. I saw minority voter intimidation; minority voters told that if they did a contested ballot (as I suggested and they are allowed to do under the law), the republican election judges would not approve it because they didn't believe the voter had a "good enough reason." I saw white republican election officers, including the election judge, actually going into the booth with minority voters under the guise of "helping" when in my opinion they were really intimidating the minority voters. I saw Vietnamese and Hispanic registered voters who were not told that they had the option of viewing a video in their language to demonstrate how to use the E-slate. I saw the election judge and an election officer mimic Vietnamese when they spoke. I saw minority voters given incomplete instructions so that their ballot was "spoiled." After 3 such incidents, I made it appoint to loudly ask the election judge (the only person I was allowed to speak to directly) if the voter had been told to wait until the flag waved before they left the booth. I saw and heard much, much more, and I am soul sick about it. I kept a detailed written journal of what I witnessed, and I when intervened on behalf of the voters -- all to no avail. More importantly, it was a crying shame that my calls to Harris County Democratic Headquarters were not responded to at all and I had been told they would when I attended the training to be a volunteer poll watcher.

I tell you, I truly believe the the Texas Democratic Party has been taken over for republicans claiming to be democrats and they are sabotaging elections.

Dear BuzzFlash,

I believe this is the first feedback I have contributed to your site. I am just writing to say that I stand with you and your readers all the way. I was somewhat despondent the day after the elections but the flame inside me is now back and I vow now more than ever that I will not sell either my soul or my brains to the repuglican ideology. I would rather be dead than to be that blind and or stupid.

Subj: Why Note Sen. Durbin?

Dear BuzzFlash,

Read E.J. Dionne's Washington Post column today. The Democratic Party lacks leadership, has not fire in its belly, and lack courage.

Was there anything more outrageous or a better example of E.J.'s analysis than Tom Daschle saying he would vote to give the President war powers so the Party could campaign on other issues? How many Americans, Brits, Iraqis, and God knows who else will die because of that approach. He abdicated any position of leadership with that one as far as I am concerned.

I have seen few Democrats worth voting for for P{resident. For those pushing for Gary Hart -- get real. All we need is a candidate to remind the electorate of the Clinton sexual follies and it's over. We need a decent man, who can speak forcefully, confidentially, and whip The Shrub's rear end in a debate. (That is not you, Al.)

I've seen few who measure up but Sen Dick Durbin from Illinois, who won with 60% of the vote on Tuesday, strikes me as being head and shoulders above any I've seen.

I've never lived in Illinois in my 60+ years and I am retired West Pointer who believes our Founding Fathers are rolling in their graves after this election, if they were not before.

Some intelligent Democrat with a scintilla of charisma needs to step forward now.

Subj: Nancy Pelosi

Dear BuzzFlash,

We have an opportunity to bring much needed change to our beloved party. Please join me in supporting Nancy Pelosi for minority leader of the house. Martin Frost is a good centrist Democrat, but do we really need another white guy from Texas running the show.

Nancy Pelosi is a wonderful, gritty, principled, strong woman from the great city of San Francisco. California was the only state that gave a big finger to George Bush and his minions this past Tuesday. California is NOT out of step with the rest of the country. We are way ahead of the rest of the country, follow us.. I urge you to contact house leaders, your representatives, senators and your friends. Our time has come. We need Nancy Pelosi start your own grass roots campaign now.

Subj: Orrin Hatch - Judiciary

Dear BuzzFlash,

Just remember the first words out of his mouth ever time he mentions one of Bush's nominees - "he has an impeccable reputation." How many times have you heard him say that - ALWAYS and ALWAYS it turns out to be garbage.

Subj: Bush Harken Smoking Gun

Dear BuzzFlash,

From today's edition of "The San Diego Reader" (sandiegoreader.com)

San Diego lawyer Mike Aguirre, who has taken on everyone from Chargers owner Alex Spanos to Padres owner John Moores is now going after none other than George W. bush. Aguirre told the Washington Post last week that he had obtained records under the Freedom of Information Act regarding 1990 Bush's sale of stock in Harken Energy Company months before Harken reported big losses. S.E.C. staffers had ruled that there was insufficient evidence to support an insider-trading allegation against Bush, who claimed he had done nothing wrong. But Aguirre discovered a letter in SEC files from Harken's outside lawyers cautioning Bush and fellow directors against selling shares if they had negative information about the firm's prospects. The letter arrived in SEC offices on August 22, 1991, one day after the SEC decided not to proceed against Bush, according to the Post. "There was a failure to deal with the most important piece of evidence", observed Aguirre.

Subj: Aaron McGruder

Dear BuzzFlash,

Here I am, a middle 50's, middle class, college educated white scientist, and who do I think has made the most sense of politics and the spineless democrats? Aaron McGruder. Yeah, a 20's-something black man, who is of all things, a cartoonist with a degree in sociology.

It was in his speech to Emory University that he said, "Yeah, I mean [the Bush Administration] are real gangsters! You know, like the kind that kill you. These guys (sic) say, 'yeah, I stole the election! What you gonna do about it? Yeah, we give tax breaks to the wealthy! So? What do you got to say? Huh?'"

Apparently, one 20-year old cartoonist has a hell of lot more guts, intelligence and insight that all the Dashle and Gebhardt leadership (sic) crowd combined.

I think of Aaron every time I read one of your articles saying the Bush Gang did this or did that evil deed...

Yeah, what you gonna do about it?

Subj: Three Simple Things The Democrats Must do in the next Two Years

Dear BuzzFlash,

Okay, we're all disgusted. The Republicans continue to lie, cheat and steal, and nobody seems interested in doing anything about it.

I'm tired of watching smug Republicans gloat over their successful hoodwinking of America – but, to be honest, I'm far more tired of the weak campaigns and political strategy employed by the Democrats in the past two elections. Gore lost an election to an inferior opponent due more to poor campaign strategy than the Florida Voter Scandal…over the past two years the Democrats have given me the image that they were running around in a timid frenzy instead of pounding the Republicans and building support for a Democratic rebirth. Now, they've lost an election that was too important to lose.

So, it's obvious to me that the Democrats need help. James Carville doesn't seem to be actively behind the scenes contributing political strategy anymore, and the Democrats can't seem to get it through their collective heads that the American voting public isn't going to "figure it out on their own", so I offer the outline of a much-needed strategy. In a sense, this is a no-holds-barred, no-excuses, "Three Simple Things The Democrats Must do in the next Two Years" report, delivered free of charge for the cause.

Number one: Give Bush the reputation he has earned. Bush has Harken Energy, Enron, and numerous other violations and illegal activities in his past and present. If Clinton had done any of these things, the Republicans would have moved to impeach him fifty times by now. Democrats should push private stockholder organizations and labor groups to openly sue Bush. There are literally armies of lawyers who do this kind of thing every day. When almost any company of considerable size misses earnings, somebody sues. When companies re-state earnings, a whole bunch of people sue. Why haven't the Democrats pushed those with legitimate complaints against the oil magnates Bush and Cheney to action? I don't think Bush would ever get convicted, but it won't matter. After years of fighting in the courts, with Bush constantly having to address the accusations of high-priced attorneys, the damage will have been done. It would even be better if as soon as a lawsuit is announced, a Democrat in either the House or Senate stood up and immediately starting calling for impeachment. Bush won't be impeached, but it will scar his image. He's guilty of SEC violations – and it will come out. Just as the Republicans successfully managed to convince the public that Clinton was a bad guy – it can be done even more easily to Bush.

Number two: Hire better PR representatives. The Republicans are beating the pants off the Democrats in one area: the spin game. It's time for the DNC to recognize that the current strategy isn't working, despite so much material to work with. How about a campaign funded as an "underground" advertising motif, sort of like the "Truth" anti-cigarette campaigns? If people need advertising to be convinced not to kill themselves with cigarettes, they need advertising that will convince them not to destroy the country with their apathy. I can see Trent Lott on a billboard, with the words "Ask the Republicans why deficits are better for your retirement" or "I believe in wealth, not jobs". The spin game is where the voters become subliminally convinced, not traditional negative ads. Republicans should be tagged with sound bites that describe their policies as things like "borrow and spend" and "anti-education". Republicans have no qualms about using the "shooting the messenger" tactic. Democrats ignore the fact that while Republicans work to discredit legitimate news sources, the right wing pundits are far more laughable. Point this out to the people. Ask why Rush Limbaugh thinks the country can be run on a deficit, or ask why a smart man like George Will thinks higher unemployment and lack of health care improves our standard of living.

It's time for the Democrats to understand that in the Internet age, grassroots credibility is invaluable. Republicans have honed their rhetoric down to bullet points – "lower taxes, smaller government". It’s time for the Democrats to recall "It's the Economy, stupid", and hire a PR firm to whittle their platform down to palatable size. Something like "Jobs, Education and Opportunity", "Better America for the people, by the people", or just "Better days". I think a constant push that "Democrats are for Better Days" is enough to subliminally pervade the mindset of a country in a deep funk. It says everything about how depressed the country is, in every way, and how it's time to get things right. Hey, I'm not a PR expert, but it's better than "Because we aren't Republican." Remember that the American individual is two things: apathetic and busy. Whittle the entire debate down to "Lower taxes and smaller government? Is that better than jobs, education and opportunity?" Do we want war with China or "better days"? Don’t worry about people knowing the underlying granularity of the platform. That's for people who actually care, like me, and they will research it anyway. You need to focus on the 99.9% of Americans who want it in an easy-to-swallow format.

Number three: This is a tough one, but let's get some real leaders up for the presidential election and let them go after Bush. What about guys like Chris Dodd? Where are the charismatic speakers who can push the slouching Bush out of the way? Gore has the potential, but he hasn't proven he can flex his intellect consistently. I pulled for Gore during his entire campaign – and I can only recall exactly one truly decent speech. He should have trounced Bush in the debates, but he botched that. I hope he runs again, but I can't support him until I see better tactics. John Edwards is a solid candidate, and has a better record than Bush did but I think he needs to make a run, not to win but to gain the name recognition to join in as a VP candidate. He'll give extra punch to the ticket, then he might ride into the White House after election. Democrats should stay away from anyone that the Republicans can use with Clinton bashing – like Gary Hart. Sorry, Gary, but in order to win, the Democrats need as impeccable leader as possible. I don't know exactly who that would be right now, but somebody needs to jump in the ring.

That's it. This is what it will take. By improving the delivery of the message, Democrats can align themselves with voters of all ages, and voters of all walks of life. It will take more than standing back and hoping the American people figure out the truth.

This mission will take more than stewing anger, more than getting out your own personal vote. It will first take the effort of the hardcore Democratic base to make the DNC and the Democratic leader understand that wholesale change of presentation and strategy must occur. I remind anyone who is discouraged that our fight is more winnable than fights that were fought before – and won. Slavery was an evil sanctioned by the US government, with laws to keep it in place--- and it was defeated. So too with women's right to vote, minority right to vote, British rule, Apartheid, Nazisim, and many other evil intents. This latest skirmish will be no different, and it is infinitely closer to winning than those other battles. We owe it to all who fought those battles – many who laid down their very lives for change -- to muster the effort, minor by comparison, to push the victory ahead. This war will continue to our children and grandchildren, just as it was passed to us.

Subj: Two Words

Dear BuzzFlash,

NANCY PELOSI!!

In today's paper both Novak and Will warned Democrats against moving too far left which they believe would be represented by electing Ms. Pelosi to House Minority Leader. Gee, are they trying to give the Democrats helpful advice? Of course they prefer we take the centrist, spineless approach--it works wonders for them! Let's try something new--be part of a real opposition party.

Subj: Bush's Press Conference

Buzz:

I saw the news conference today on C-Span of Chimpy Bush and the press corps. He gave a non-answer to a question about the CIA's reports that Iraq does not pose an imminent threat to the U.S. He mumbled something about those who issued the report not knowing what "I know" about Iraq's threat. Then he went on about how many times the U.S. did nothing about Saddam. He looked like a schoolboy trying to get through an oral book report--uncomfortable, blowing air out of his mouth. The man has no presence. I was surprised he even gave a press conference. He had no adoring audiences waving flags. He was totally out of his element. This is the man who was given a " m andate" by the American people on Tuesday.? He looked like he was afraid of is own shadow when put in front of the press. For a little while there, I was not afraid. I knew the emperor had no clothes. He is afraid of US. We must take him on.

A BuzzFlash reader

[BuzzFlash Note: Yeah, we saw it, too. Nearly every single reporter who asked a question gushed and blushed when the idiot-in-chief smiled at them. It was disgusting. That wasn't a room of journalists, it was a gaggle of simple-minded 13-year-old girls hoping the well-dressed rich boy would ask them to the dance.]

Subj: A Plan for 2004

Dear BuzzFlash,

These are ten beginning steps I can't believe the democrats haven't been doing for two years:

1. TAX CUTS FOR THE MIDDLE CLASS - don't say you are rolling back any tax cut, just tell the country that instead of giving to the wealthy, you are planning on giving the tax cuts to the middle class, the people who need it

2. WAGE A WAR ON POVERTY - highlight the class divide not by pointing it out (do not get into class warfare) but rather by going into the country's poorest areas and presenting national plans for revitalization despite the administrations best efforts at ignoring these people.

3. CORPORATE CORRUPTION - Bring up Bush's own insider trading deal at Harken & the White House support of Harvey Pitt (do not let the Pitt thing go away, keep knocking him - sooner or later he will be forced to answer). Show Bush has no credibility/leadership on the issue. Display a new economic team who can have true rehabilitation - let Sen. Sarbanes lead on this issue

4. QUESTION BUSH's MILITARY SERVICE - get Bush to answer where those missing eighteen months of service went, get the bastard on the defensive (again, keep knocking him - this is a smoking gun on this phony saber-rattler)

5. BRING ALL MINORITIES BACK IN THE FOLD - hold several regional summits with all of the different minority/ethnic leaders, make it known that the democrats are hearing their disparate voices - this is the vote that will change the balance of power

6. PAINT BUSH AS TOO FAR TO THE RIGHT IN A MORE EFFECTIVE MANNER - harmful environmental policy, weak foreign policy, no overall vision, weak economic vision, too heavily influenced by the "radical right", too often blurs the line of separation of church and state, there are no checks and balances...

7. TAKE THE SHOW ON THE ROAD - hold more town hall meetings/listening tours than anybody can stand. The media will not be broadcasting the democratic message so get out there and bring it to the people. Also NO press conferences in front of capitol hill - SHOUT the message from the unemployment lines, from union halls, from farm foreclosures, etc.

8. HUMOR/LIKABILITY - wherever possible use humor and be likable - stop screeching - that goes for Gephardt, Hillary Clinton, Terry McCauliffe. This way whenever you do yell it ends up as effective and not more of the same.

9. STOP SHOWNG RESPECT - remember Bush was not elected, make him answer to the American people, make him face the media more, ridicule his stump speech/pep rally style so much that he won't be able to do it any longer without the press taking notice. You will effectively corner him. (Remember what happened when he gave that awful speech at Wall Street)

10. DO NOT BACK DOWN - take the fight to him. Look where trying to work with him got you. Find the leaders who can take the gloves off - it is definitely not Joe Lieberman

Subj: Profiles in Courage: Wellstone, Cleland, and Jeffords

BuzzFlash:

Thanks so much for the additional Mailbag comments. Yes, misery does love company and I really needed the company of fellow BuzzFlash writers. I have felt like there is a hole in my heart and I keep waiting for the hole to fill back in. Of course it doesn't help when the local campaign strategist for the losing Georgia (incumbent) Democratic candidate for governor states that, "it will probably be a long time before we have another Democratic governor". What a defeatist and stupid comment. His candidate had 20 million dollars and did not use any of it to get his voters out to the polls! The infamous, baby-faced, satanic, ( & will surely be going to hell) Ga. Republican Chairman Ralph Reed, did!!!

But I digress. The real purpose of this letter is to thank BuzzFlash and three "profiles in courage": Jim Jeffords, Max Cleland, and the late Paul Wellstone. (I actually hurt for Cleland...and it's not a pity thing) Also, lovers of democracy like Nancy Lynn Nagy and other BuzzFlash regulars, THANK YOU!! It's so wonderful to know that we are not alone. Let's continue to uplift one another and fight for America. THANK GOD that I found this web-site. As poor as I am, I will continue to support this site, as long as I can (and while we all can)!!!

Dear BuzzFlash,

Thank you. I went to bed this morning at about the time most people here were getting up - what, 6:30 am, GMT? - hoping that when I woke up things would look better. They didn't. It was grey and rainy and even worse than it had been when I crashed. And London weather was doing it's thing, and I just didn't have the heart for...well, anything.

It's very easy to despair, but we need to be reminded not to give up, that we can keep fighting to get our country back. Thank you so much for being there.

We'll come back. We have to. We've got something worth fighting for.

Subj: Rant and Toon

Dear BuzzFlash,

This last takeover by the GOP is the end to their slow motion Coup d'etat. They now have it all. The three branches of government is in their total control. Gee, am I to believe that since selection 2000 that Jeb cleaned up the voting system here in Florida? ha. He just replaced tangible paper ballots with Republican made touch screen voting computers. That way there is no paper trail. Sweet.

Florida voted liberal on all referendums except the death penalty (Fl made it a part of it's state constitution) We voted to protect pregnant pigs from small cages, we voted for smaller class sizes in our public schools, and no smoking in public places. These are liberal ideas we voted for -- and we elected Jeb with double digits over McBride? I don't think so.

The stock market dropped drastically after Bush was selected, long before 9/11. People like me are taking their money out of the market. Foreign investors see the 1000 points of lightning from the Bushies and are reinvesting elsewhere. Bush will implode this economy in the next few years with sustaining an ongoing war. Tax cuts and Texass Tough Talk. It's all about the oil. Iraqi oil and a nice Afghanistan pipeline. It's that simple.

All the while the TV media covers Wynonna Ryder while the GOP takes over. Paul Wellstone's memorial got more negative air time via an ex- WWF outgoing MN governor than the actual covering of Wellstone's death. And I am to believe that only Democrats die in plane crashes or Democrat leaders are the only ones assassinated? I don't think so.

Geez, I needed that rant.

The US representative just selected from the Florida panhandle, Jeff Miller, never served in the military, but his Democratic contender was a navy pilot in VietNam and the Democrat only got 26% of the vote from this military rich area. Miller was appointed by Bush when Joe Scarborough resigned the seat he just won in 2000. This mean-mouthed Scarborough is the same ex-Congressman who had a dead intern turn up in his Florida office.

The Pensacola News Journal pays this slug to write commentary.

It's a nasty nest of evil politics here in the Florida Panhandle, often referred to as a bastion of conservatism. Right up the Bushes street. Here's a fine example of guns & god on the Redneck Riviera http://www.allhatnocattle.net/GunsNReligion.htm

I don't believe the people of Florida reelected Jeb. It's too easy to fix the outcome of an election using technology that leaves no paper trail. At least with hanging chads Florida voters had something to recount. Now, we have nothing to recount.

Subj: Slash and Burn

Dear BuzzFlash,

We need a "slash & burn" leader to replace Dick Gephart. In other words - a Democrat Newt Gringich. We need a thief, a liar, an investigator (doesn't matter if it's a real investigator or not), someone who will go after the right wing media, will have the guts to stand up and say "Bush is lying", Trent Lott is lying, etc. and never, ever believe the words out of Orrin Hatch's mouth when he says "he has an impeccable" reputation. A party who would okay Ted Olson for solicitor general is totally insane - scream it from the roof tops - they are liars. They pick and choose judges and now they're picking and choosing states. If I hear one more pundit or Democrat say "we can't do that", then get the hell out and get someone who will. The Republicans have already proven that they will do exactly that and they are going to keep it up. Don't let the "Bush Crime Family" destroy this country.

Thank you - Sharon

Re: U.N. passes Iraq resolution on weapons inspections

Dear BuzzFlash,

This is why the Saudis last week announced that they weren't going to allow Bush to use their land -- or even their airspace -- to invade Iraq. They realized that France and Russia would be made to cave in over the lucrative oil contracts involved.

The good news is that, without the Saudis and Turkey -- for Turkey's new pro-Islamic government doesn't want to help the US invade Iraq, either -- Bush's options for staging areas are pretty limited. He not only needs a ton of land, he needs actual military bases, and lots of them. SA and Turkey fill that bill, and no other nearby nation does.

Subj: Mandate My Ass

Dear Buzz,

As the moron in chief is crowing about how "the American People have spoken", one should bear in mind that the republicans took control of the senate by gaining only 2 seats. If you consider the two closest senate races the dems lost, you realize we lost the senate by only 41,403 votes. 18,817 in New Hampshire and 22,586 in Missouri. That is hardly a mandate. However, it is depressing to think that a ballpark's worth of apathetic Democrats changed the course of history by not getting off their asses and voting.

A BuzzFlash Reader

Dear BuzzFlash,

After the devastating results of Tuesday's election, I keep hearing Democrats and Republicans alike offering their opinions as to why the American voter is turned off of Democrats. Duh! Does it not occur to anyone (especially the Democrats) to ASK us? Why isn't every Democrat Senator and House Member posting a questionnaire on their website requesting feedback from voters? Why are they not making phone calls and knocking on doors? Do Democrats not realize that they are perceived as a bunch of spineless wimps? They ignore the will of the people then expect the people to vote for them? Are they really this stupid? Senators received thousands of emails, phone calls, etc. from their constituents, begging them not to give Bush a blank check to wage war against Iraq, and they flipped us off. They voted for the Patriot Act which essentially renders the Constitution obsolete. They hang their heads in shame, shuffle their feet, and mutter like dolts. While Republicans wear their conservatism with honor and pride, Democrats act ashamed of anything considered remotely liberal.

Why did Democrats lose? I'll tell you why... Because they no longer represent the very people they expect to vote for them. They no longer support the Constitution. They care more for their positions than for making a real difference in this world. They are cowards, and they have made themselves irrelevant.

I am a liberal Democrat, and I am so very proud of it. But I can count on one hand the number of Democrat leaders I respect.

Why did Democrats lose? Because they betrayed us and the ideal of democracy and common human decency.

Since it doesn't look like they're going to ask us "Why", I ask that registered Democrats who did not vote or who voted for others contact your state Democratic Committee and the Democratic National Committee (202-263-8000) today and give them hell. Tell them you demand strong Democratic leadership and will no longer put up with Democrats who are just Republican look-alikes.

Gail

Good morning Buzz -

I'd love to see this letter in the mailbag, only for the possibility that it might get some juice started....

I believe it is imperative that the Left who has money, and they are out there, trust me, find a way to establish a media presence that will actually deal with all the criminal elements of the administration---I'm talking fearless here. I'm talking take no prisoners interviews and embarrassing the liars and showing their constituents just exactly what they are up to. I'm talking Media Whores gets visible. I'm talking Gore Vidal staring into the camera and letting it rip. I'm talking freedom, folks. And I'm talking an entire cable station that cannot, will not be corrupted. It's got to happen. They must ask all the questions that those of us who read Buzz ask and ponder and bitch about. It's not going to happen anywhere else. We have to create it.....this is the new Paul Revere of our times! The nation sits in front of its tubes and grows fat and stupid. But they'll watch. And if they have the truth in front of them, with decent interviews, relentless questioning, REAL reporting, some of them will listen....every day a few more. And they can hear the truth. And they will see that they are being HAD. And no one, Left or Right, wants to be had. It's how this country and its government evolved.

Keep it up Buzz, and put this letter where it may count!

Subj: Bush executed an American in Yemen

Dear BuzzFlash,

I just submitted this to my local paper. It's an issue no one is raising.

One of the six men killed in Yemen by a missile fired from an unmanned aircraft was an American citizen. Since the media won't, someone needs to point out that an American citizen has been executed by the president without a trial, without a judge, and without a jury. We don't know why this citizen was in this car. We don't know if he was suspected of any crimes, or if he was just in the way. We do know for sure that according to American law, he was innocent, because an American citizen is innocent until proven guilty. Some of you might care that your right to life has just been weakened. Others, I guess, will just keep voting Republican.
