Dear BuzzFlash,

The Jack Welch comparison is dead on target!!! If the SEC would only take a serious "LQQK" at the GE/RCA sale, which those of us in union local #11, National Association of Broadcast Employees & Technicians (NABET) at NBC-TV in 1987 while on strike found using the Freedom of Information Act, that the GE/RCA sale was a fraudulent and illegal sale!! Jack Welch should have been in jail by now!!!

Dear Buzz,

What's up with George W. Bush? I'll tell you. Unemployment, personal bankruptcies, health care costs, the poverty rate and homelessness -- all up.

And what's down with Mr. Bush? Employment is down -- more than two million jobs have been lost. The stock market is down (more than 35 percent), savings are down, family income is down, business investment is down, consumer confidence is down. And, now, this "compassionate conservative" administration is planning to slash Medicare reimbursements for drugs, blood, medical procedures and hospital reimbursements by 27% to 67%. All down.

Does Mr. Bush have a plan to stop all this economic devastation and suffering? We don't know. We certainly haven't seen or heard anything from our president on those topics; he's a busy man.

Mr. Bush seems to have plenty of free time to dash around the country to Republican Party events -- fundraising. So far this year, he has attended more than 50 GOP events and raised well over $120 million for partisan political purposes.

Too bad Mr. Bush doesn't have time in his busy schedule to talk to the American people about his plans to solve -- or at least deal with -- the sputtering American economy, and the economic problems of the homeless, the jobless, the pension-less, the Americans who need their president's attention.

Yes, too bad.

Dear BuzzFlash,

Just in case you missed it at 11:40 A, EST., Daschle (before the Senate) just let Bush have it with both barrels for politicizing the war. He demanded an apology from Bush for saying that Dems. in the senate are not interested in protecting the American people. I've never seen Daschle so enraged. Find his comments and get it on BuzzFlash. CNN carried it live. A video would be good because no one has ever seen Daschle so enraged.

RE: Dems rip Armey for Jewish comments

Hi Buzz,

Mr. "Intellectual DICK(!)" just embarrassed himself, only he's just not quite smart enough to know it. But, after all, he was at a round table discussion for Katherine Harris, and we all know how deep she is.

He belongs in the same deep thinking class of Republicans that Ann Coulter, Bob Barr, and George W. Bush are in. Yep! Lots and lots of deep intellect there!

Dear BuzzFlash,

911 investigations seem to be heating up. Can we therefore expect a diversion of tragic proportion anytime soon?

Like an attack on some US base in Germany, perhaps? That would get the Germans and EU on-board against the Middle East PDQ, not to mention unconvinced congressmen living on the edge, and it would fire up the flagging energies of the troops, who are spread all over the world, twiddling their thumbs, waiting for orders to attack. And the election. Gee. The repubs would flock to the polls to get their local hawk elected if a US base were targeted.

Unit rotation is another reason why Bush would benefit from an attack against a US base in Germany. He's currently arguing in favor of unaccompanied tours for the Army in Europe and S. Korea so that base support can be supplied by corporations like Halliburton's subsidiary Kellogg, Brown and Root, as they are currently providing in places like Kosovo, Bosnia, Afghanistan and Guantanamo Bay. Post-attack, Bush and White could say, "See? We told you families shouldn't be brought over. It's too dangerous."

Wouldn't you know it. We had a briefing about a credible threat to our German locale just today.

Check out letters in last week's Stars and Stripes about the unit rotation topic that has troops hot under the collar. It was an idea proposed just two weeks ago by Sec. White. Bush is losing the military vote on this issue alone.

Subject: Rumsfeld links Hussein to al Qaeda

Dear BuzzFlash,

http://www.cnn.com/2002/US/09/25/us.iraq.alqaeda/index.html

He's at it again! Donald Rumsfeld, who time will prove to be one of our nation's greatest exaggerators, has found the link between Saddam Hussein and al Qaeda. Here's the guy who came out right after September 11th, and boldly told the press that they should not expect him to be honest with them regarding the war and tactics. Why any of the Fourth Estate showed up at any subsequent press conference is beyond me, but that may have been the last verifiable honest thing Rumsfeld has said. Also, wasn't the Dept. of Strategic Influence his brainchild?

The true sign of a prevaricator is their unwillingness and inability to ever provide evidence of the claims that they make. Whenever somebody says "you'll have to trust us on this," you know very well that they don't have your best intentions in mind. In fact, the entrusted is generally looking out for what serves their own interests through their secretive actions.

Rumsfeld has proven time and time again that he can't be believed. So wait for the proof, but don't hold your breath if you are a survivor.

Dear BuzzFlash:

Lots of commentators these days quoting Kipling's "Common Form":

If any question why we died,
Tell them, because our fathers lied.

But right below that in Kipling's "Epitaphs of the War" is something Dubya might want to bear in mind, since he's so concerned with God and the afterlife:

A DEAD STATESMAN

I could not dig: I dared not rob:
Therefore I lied to please the mob.
Now all my lies are proved untrue
And I must face the men I slew.
What tale shall serve me here among
Mine angry and defrauded young?

Dear Buzz,

Re: Thank you, Al Gore

September 24, 2002

Dear Al Gore,

Thank you for speaking out so strongly against the Bush Administration's determination to give itself preemptive warfare power beyond the explicit Constitutional control of the Congress, which was clearly and carefully set down by the Founding Fathers.

The present administration (one I consider to be illegal) is destroying our Constitution, our economy, our friendships and trust with other nations, and is obviously and contemptibly attempting to become the bullying master of the planet.

The Bush Administration has done exactly what you warned us against. They have gutted our economy and are trying to destroy the middle class by creating more wealth for a few and poverty for the rest of us. They have eroded and threatened our civil rights and are attempting to create a culture of suspicion and enmity among Americans. They are unraveling years of progress on the ecology, world economy, and arms control. And the speed at which they have done it has been astounding. You are right that it's taken just one year to destroy our credibility and standing in the world.

George Bush has ordered the United Nations to "get a backbone" when, in effect the administration is the enemy who has attempted to destroy that backbone. The United Nations is dependent on just exactly what its name says, United Nations.

Please do not let up on pressuring George Bush to do the right thing, because we need leaders now more than ever to fight for our country and for us, and now for the rest of the world too.

In gratitude, Judith Foster California Democrat

Dear BuzzFlash,

Brit Hume is claiming that Gore lied in his recent speech.

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,64027,00.html

He cites a 1991 Senate speech by Gore in which he did not blame President Bush for not removing Saddam Hussein.

Supposedly. But, when you read his actual comments, in full, and in context, you get a different impression.

Go here...

http://thomas.loc.gov/home/r102query.html

And look up Gore's April 18, 2001 speech.

Then look up Gore speech on the Senate floor on September 19, 2001, in which he outlines a policy to get rid of Saddam Hussein.

This is already circulating in right-wing circles. It needs to be debunked, and fast.

Dear BuzzFlash,

Here in Oregon, local old-growth forest on the upper Rogue River is to be logged instead of secondary growth as a result of Bush’s forest policy. George came here and told his constituents that cutting trees to prevent fires was just “common sense.” Unfortunately, sense isn’t common, and good sense also takes a willingness to consider facts.

Facts are beginning to seem pointless, but the fact is trees don’t cause forest fires. While we had fires in Oregon, there were also fires in Russia, Indonesia, and Brazil, none of them famous for not logging. Today, there are fires in Southern California. I think they were called “brush fires” on the news. Yet, some folks, who clearly lack Republican common sense, think these fires might be more another sign of environmental distress than a logging deficit. If you think about it, are trees wearing SPF 40 sunscreen and staying out of the noonday sun?

While I'm throwing cyber-rocks through Republican windows, I would also like to point out that those who support giving away our civil rights also claim these same rights are divinely derived. It follows then that they do not have the authority to give away other people’s rights, especially if they believe those rights were given to them by God.

Bush came into office promising to be a “uniter, not a divider.” Now he has ripped our country apart. Republicans have claimed moral superiority while not being held accountable for their own ethics. They claim to be above reproach while calling others names. They have used 9/11 as an excuse. They have turned the word “democracy” into a euphemism for junta, supporting any gang of thugs that will do business. They have privatized the military, moving the legitimate need for security from the light of national debate into the private offices of profit motive. They have allowed corporations to buy our press and congress, turning the Land of the Free into their springboard for global corporate rule. The war on terror is really a war on anyone who gets in their way.

This administration, which has so abused its power, now asks for more. This is a moment in history when the future hangs in the balance. Say “no” to these evil men who seek to destroy so much. And for what?

Thank you BuzzFlash. Like many others have said, you are a lifeline.

Dear BuzzFlash,

I submitted this letter to USA Today. Don't know if it will see Ink? I decided to submit it to you before Congress rolls over without getting answers to the questions many have raised. You may use the in the Mail Bag or Contributors Section. Thanks

An Open Letter to the Members of the United States Congress:

Before giving the President a blank check of authority to use force against Iraq, to eliminate an eminent threat, or to uphold UN resolutions or to disarm Iraq or whatever reason he wants to use this week. There are some important considerations that need to be addressed.

1. It would be a violation of the UN charter, signed in 1945, for a member nation to use force to uphold a UN resolution without the express authorization of the UN Security Council. By getting the Congress to vote the President broad authority to use force, before the UN has made its decision, he will have gotten Congress to repudiate the UN Charter. Remember the constitutional provision that a duly ratified treaty becomes the law of the land. An aggressive war for preemptive self defense without proof of the immediate danger would also be in violation of international law. Where is this President’s respect for the rule of law? How committed is the President to the principle that the UN should become relevant, and begin upholding its resolutions with resolve? Would he be faithful to that principle if the UN decided to uphold those resolutions that Israel has been in violation of for over thirty years?

2. Many in Congress have asked for answers to a number of questions. Such as proof of the existence of an immediate threat by Iraq, instead of many unlikely what ifs. What are the administrations plans following the removal of Saddam Hussein? How long might we be an occupying force in Iraq? How much would it cost? And, what are the various complications that could arise? Discussion of these issues are legitimate and necessary.

3. We are the most powerful nation on earth, and we do have some leadership responsibility in the world. However, there is a fundamental principle of democratic governments that those who govern earn their legitimacy to govern from the governed. If we are to lead the world, we must do so with wisdom and restraint, we cannot do it by ignoring world opinion or international law. When we go before the world and say we will work with you, but if we don’t like the result, we will act without you, we are not better than the neighborhood gang leader who mistakenly believes the fear of his gun is the same as respect. If you can only lead by fear, then you have not the respect necessary to lead with legitimacy.

4. During the last four decades, the United States Congress has abandoned it’s Constitutional duty with regard to it’s war making powers. This Presidents wants to take the country into a preemptive war as the aggressor, and has not been able or willing to prove the necessity for such an action. History will not view kindly another act of abdication on such a serious issue. This is a matter of such importance, that it should require a formal declaration of war.

5. There are those who have suggested that Congressional Democrats would rollover, and give the President his vote, so that they can put the issue behind them and focus their campaigns on the domestic issues. However, giving the President an unparalleled blank check of authority to make war, does not guarantee that the subject of conversation will change. Putting a stop order on that blank check may not be possible.

I urge members of Congress to reread Profiles in Courage. There has not been a time in our history when we had greater need for men with real political courage.

I ask the Congress? Do not abandon the Constitution, and more importantly, do not abandon this country’s history. Deny the President his resolution.

Tonight on Newshour

http://www.pbs.org/newshour/bb/international/july-dec02/rice_9-25.html

MARGARET WARNER: Let me close by asking you a couple of questions about the joint inquiry into the pre-9/11 intelligence failures because you just referred to the attack without warning.

You had said back in May, "I don't think anybody could have predicted that these people would take an airplane and slam it into the World Trade Center, that they would try to use an airplane as a missile."

Now, as you know, the joint inquiry found otherwise; they found there was a lot of historical evidence that, one, terrorists planned and were capable of attacks in the U.S. - and two, that they talked a lot about using airplanes as weapons. Given everything that has come out, do you still believe that the attacks were unpredictable?

CONDOLEEZZA RICE: Yes, I do still believe that the attacks were unpredictable. Look, the 1998 reports that apparently some intelligence analysts looked at and made an analysis that perhaps al-Qaida wanted to slam planes into buildings were simply not made available to the Bush Administration.

We weren't here in 1998, and I think you have to look at the fact that this was among a host of other intelligence analyses that suggested that car bombs and attacks against nuclear plants, other means of terrorism were more likely.

But the fact is when I spoke in May about what was presented to the president on August 6, it is absolutely the case that what was presented to the president and what was analyzed for him and what was analyzed throughout the administration was traditional methods of hijacking - in fact that the hijackings might be to try and win release of al-Qaida prisoners or something like that.

There wasn't any mention or analysis of people slamming planes into buildings; it simply wasn't there.

Subj: Fertick kicks O'Reilly's butt!

Dear BuzzFlash,

Democrats.com's Bob Fertik Cleans Bill O'Reilly's Clock in Face-to-Face Debate

In the first head-to-head debate between Democrats.com and FOX News, Democrats.com won! Bill O'Reilly tried to argue that Al Gore's historic speech was not important enough to warrant live coverage by the cable networks. Bob Fertik countered that Al Gore won the 2000 election, and his speech reflects the opinions of the MAJORITY of Americans who oppose Bush's War. O'Reilly tried to argue that the polls favor Bush's War, but Fertik cited the most recent CBS News poll:

52% US should follow recommendations of the UN
37% US should decide what to do on its own

57% US should wait and give the UN more time to get weapons inspectors back into Iraq
37% US should take military action against Iraq fairly soon

61% US needs to wait for its allies before taking any action against Iraq
31% Iraq presents such a clear danger to American interests that the US needs to act now, even without the support of its allies

Final Score: Democrats.com 1, O'Reilly 0

Buzz,

He's irrelevant, sniffed the GHP, the "he" being Al Gore, who had just given the Wingnut of War the verbal thrashing he so richly deserved. (He's about as irrelevant as Saddam's oil is to Junior and the Undisclosed One). The Irrelevant One gave his speech to the other irrelevants WE THE PEOPLE, and met with thunderous applause. In spite of how irrelevant he is, he has become big news, and just may have given Dems the backbone they need to push that two-bit cheap shot artist down on his ass where he belongs. I can't remember the last time I saw Daschle blow a gasket like he did today after Two-Bit accused the Senate (aka Democrats) of not caring about the security of America. Now it's time to go for the throat! Dems have been grumbling that if they don't do Two-Bit's evil bidding, there will be no time to talk about the issues. Folks! Wake up! The only issue getting any play is WAR. Even if you go along with the Two-bit program, the issue will still be WAR. You cannot shout over the rock concert of war, besides, Americans feeling the effects of the slumping economy, know it's the economy. We know all about the CEO get rich quick plan and stick it to the little guy. We know Two-bit blathered on and on about his plans for social security. What some of us apparently don't know is that there is an alternative to the Two-bit war plan. When you have Two-bit and his gang constantly beating the drums of unilateral action that MUST BE CARRIED OUT THIS VERY MINUTE OR SADDAM WILL SICK HIS NUCULAR WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION ON US, MAYBE TODAY, MAYBE NEXT YEAR, OR MAYBE SOMEDAY IF HE EVER GETS HIS HANDS ON THEM, and the Dems remain silent, what do you expect? People believe it. From the get-go, and I hate to say it, Dems have been wrong. They should have made this THEIR issue, they should have spoken up against this nonsense at any, and every opportunity. They should have kept Osama and the Anthrax terrorist front and center in the minds of Americans whenever Two-bit so much as attempted to form an I or an S with his lips. There's still time, I hope they use it wisely.

Dear BuzzFlash,

It was with some interest that I learnt of Al Gore's speech on the war and Iraq. Likewise, the comments made today by Tom Daschle were included amongst the leading news items on NZ television. I can only presume they have created so much interest because such vocal opposition has become a rare thing in this current climate. The Democrat's now however, find themselves in a rather precarious situation. If they retreat back under their security blankets, it is as good as admitting that "oops, sorry about that, we lost our heads for a minute." This will be seen as a sign of fear. Fear of a backlash from a fearful nation. We all know that the Repugs can smell fear from miles away, and they are also the best exploiters of it. Obviously Al Gore has rightly concluded that the Dems have nothing to lose, and if they don't act quickly and establish themselves as the credible voice of opposition, as a vehicle for so many thinking American's disillusioned with Bush & Co., their opportunity may be lost for good. Clearly gloomy economic and domestic issues just aren't going to cut it this time. Yes, the Democrats now find themselves riding a bit of a wave, so they better hang on, focus on the shoreline and go with the opportunity that has presented itself to them, or it's gonna be a slap down!

P.S. latest NZ national opinion poll shows a whopping 84% oppose military action against Iraq

"Condoleezza Rice's statements, aired Wednesday on PBS'"The NewsHour With Jim Lehrer" program, are the strongest yet alleging contacts between al-Qaida and the Iraqi government. Previously, evidence of the two working together was tenuous, or came from unreliable sources."

Since when did Condi "Miss Chevron" Rice become a "reliable" source? She offered no new evidence.

We know that the last time she lectured the nation that the administration had no idea that terrorists might use planes as weapons she was LYING. And so far, every other bit of evidence offered up by this administration about Iraq has been discredited.

Dear BuzzFlash,

George W. Bush is a rogue President. He says his primary job is to protect the American people. It's not. I happen to remember the public Oath of Office that he took. That's the Oath of Office that he took on Inauguration Day as he swore on the Bible of George Washington. That's the very one that the "masonic lodge" in New York holds dear and really does protect. That's the one that has now been soiled by this rogue President. As one who has revered George Washington and his lambskin apron since I was 12 years old, I am greatly disappointed and fearful for our country.

History shows that so many crimes have been committed by Heads of State around the world throughout the ages under the guise of protecting their subjects. We have a Constitution of the PEOPLE, by the PEOPLE, and for the PEOPLE to counter that. Our rogue President claims it's his primary job to protect us, runs roughshod over the Constitution, flaunts it, and demeans the elected representatives of the PEOPLE. the U.S. Senate. The U.S. Senate has an obligation to see that the President upholds the Constitution. If the President does not, it has recourse to do something about it. That something is "impeachment". The Senate should make note of the fact that Mr. Cheney is a part of this rogue Presidency and he ought to be impeached if the rogue President is impeached.

Mr. Bush is the one that is not interested in our national security. He is a rogue President who is in this game of "war" to enhance his own, his father's, Mr. Cheney's and Mr. Blair's pocket books. Isn't it amazing that Mr. Blair's approach is exactly the same as Mr. Cheney's approach during the last administration with the help of the same Mr. George Herbert Walker Bush? After the war, get your payoff from the company that takes over the "Army corps of engineers" job. The only thing missing is the "gulf war" and our rogue President plans to provide that. The only thing missing is the same cause that his Daddy had. What the rogue President, the rogue Vice President, and the rogue National Security Advisor are doing to make up for that is to violate the public trust through lies and cover-ups to make the "war" happen. The war on terrorism just wasn't big enough to accomplish their goals.

Mr. Bush, just honor your Oath of Office, please. And get a copy of the Constitution and read it. Read the Preamble. Don't forget about the Amendments, too. I speak as only one of the many PEOPLE you report to, and I'm the only one I can speak for. All of the other PEOPLE must speak for themselves.

Thanks BuzzFlash for all your good work and for making my communication possible.

one of the PEOPLE,

mcw
