The BuzzFlash Mailbag
February 26, 2002
I have recently noticed your subliminal campaign to elevate Mr. Bush's status by placing derogatory comments about our last ELECTED president, Bill Clinton, on NYPD Blue. The only thing you will accomplish by your stealth campaign, will be to turn loyal viewers into former viewers and reduce your Nielson ratings.
My family will never again watch the show, and I will make every effort to point out what you are doing to anyone who may not have noticed. If we choose to hear the latest propaganda from the whitehouse, we can always tune in to ABC News.
A recent Buzz writer noted that it has become a common practice for TV sit-coms and dramas (along with Jay Leno, etc.) to continue with Clinton jokes and comments even though we now have a man in the White House who is ripe for political commentary. Why is this and what can be done about it? Let's BUZZZZZZZZZZZZ the offending shows with letters, e-mails, and phone calls the way the freephers do!!
Since Democrats seem to be in a stupor and seemingly aren't organized......those of us who are aware and care can do something about it. Let's not be afraid to make our voices heard!! Let's do it!!
become such a pinup guy for older women that I've got a new nickname for
him . . . Rumstud."
[BuzzFlash Note: The idea that Rumsfeld could be considered a "pinup" is frightening enough, but W's latest nickname trumps all previously known frightening thoughts because it is a reminder that the "leader" (and we use the term very lightly) of the free world has the intellectual capacity and the social graces of a drunken frat boy.]
Last night while watching Crossfire I saw, on that annoying scroll across the bottom of the screen, "President of internet oversight body says goal of leaving Internet in pvt. hands is unworkable-reccommends a major restructuring." This is unsettling, as I believe the current administration would like to eliminate any negative comments or questions regarding their administration, a more apt description, any truths regarding their administration. I have wondered for a while how long it would take them to attempt to stop the truth. I believe they've started.
is the man who staffed his administration with liars and criminals from
Bush 1 and appointed Otto Reich who in Bush 1 had a job requiring him
to lie and do just what the new Office of Strategic Influence is intended
to do. The only thing true here is that Rumsfeld was just as amazed that
the government wouldn't tell the people the truth. Now
Bush, questioned at the White House, said: "I told Secretary Rumsfeld ... that we'll tell the American people the truth."
Rumsfeld "was just as amazed as I was about reading some allegation
that somehow our government would never tell the American people the truth,"
Bush said, adding that
Subj: Corporate campaign to elevate Dubya by demeaning Bill Clinton
I read that wonderful letter (Subj: The Calico Cat) in your Mailbag today and I too, have recently noticed the many subliminal, anti-Clinton remarks in several non news shows. They are obviously placed in spots to be unconsciously absorbed by the viewers.
In addition to Providence, all the Law & Order shows, and Alias, I also noticed very derogatory remarks about our last ELECTED president, on ABC's NYPD Blue. I intend to write the networks and the individual shows to let them know the reason I've stopped watching. Maybe, if they get a big enough response from angry viewers, they'll rethink their slimy stealth campaign!
Thanks to your BuzzFlash Mailbag and the very observant writer for pointing it out.
for any publication on Bush's speech writer resigning... you know the
one who wrote the Axis of Evil speech.
give Bush too much credit when you label articles "Bush does this,
Bush does that."
[BuzzFlash Note: We agree that Bush probably hasn't made a decision on his own since he became a politician, if not long before that. However, one problem with labeling all the decisions as coming from his "handlers" is that any heat from those decisions is deflected and Bush might not be held to blame. By pointing them out as Bush's decisions, when we see lists of his accomplishments (here and here and here), we can all be certain of the kind of human he is or isn't.]
I sent this letter to the Washington Post (and Leonard Downie, Wash. Post executive editor) today in reaction to this article: http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/wp-dyn/A58168-2002Feb23
The New York Times article I reference in the letter is linked in the letter.
My point is a serious one: If, in fact, it is the Pakistani Intelligence community that is involved in the kidnapping and murder of Danny Pearl, it could mean BIG TROUBLE for our alliance with Pakistan. And that is PRECISELY why, I think, the Washington Post wishes to sweep that possible connection to Pakistani Intelligence persons under the rug (and put it innocuously at the end of the article) – in order to protect the Bush administration's waging of this "war."
To the Editor and Leonard Downie:
Your reporters ramble on for many paragraphs in "Tape Stirs Questions Over Pearl's Killing" [Feb. 25] about "possible" Al Qaeda ties to the murder of Daniel Pearl and, then, finally in the last paragraph get to the real meat of the story: that the ONLY participant caught, so far, in that murder has clear ties to the Pakistani intelligence community.
The most relevant paragraph is the last: "Pakistani officials are worried that sending [Islamic radical Sheik Omar] Saeed to the United States could disclose ties between Pakistani secret services and Jaish-i-Muhammad, the terrorist group he is affiliated with"
Isn't it an axiom in journalism that the most important information is put at the top of an article?
The New York Times, today, leads its story with this header: "Death of Reporter Puts Focus on Pakistan's Intelligence Unit" http://www.nytimes.com/2002/02/25/international/asia/25PEAR.html
are you trying to invent? That only an Arab could want to kill a Jewish
reporter? There are many people and groups in the Middle East, and in
the world, that hate Jewish people; it is not only Arabs that might want
to kill Danny Pearl because he was a Jewish reporter.

A letter to the FCC regarding CNN's misreporting of the news.
Original Message --------
Dear Sir or Ma'am,
am writing to file a complaint against CNN for intentionally distorting
the news. The FCC has stated publicly that "rigging or slanting the
news is a most heinous act against the public interest." The FCC
does act to protect the public interest where it has received
On Saturday, Feb. 23, 2002 I was listening to CNN. Major Garrett was reporting from the Whitehouse on the GAO's suit against the Vice President of the United States. I was alarmed by the fact that he told the audience, all viewers of CNN that
immediately sent off an e-mail
Major Garrett just reported that the Whitehouse believes that the GAO has overstepped its bounds because it wants "not only who they met with but wants to know what they discussed."
But this is from an August 17 letter to VP Cheney from Walker of the GAO.
PLEASE DO NOT REPORT MISINFORMATION JUST BECAUSE IT IS PUT OUT BY THE WHITEHOUSE!
on that day, I called CNN, Cnn News Network 820 1st St. NE Washington,
DC (202) 898-7900 and informed them of this error as well, that while
the GAO had originally asked for notes and minutes in their demand letter,
that they modified their request as noted in a letter dated in August
and were "scaling back the records we are requesting to
Later on, as I was reading transcripts and reports about the story at the CNN website, I found the transcripts from the day before on Inside Politics where Major Garrett had been reporting from the Whitehouse on the lawsuit against the Vice President. Here is what he said the day before reporting on Saturday that the suit against Cheney is about "candid advice".
In the suit filed by the GAO it is stated specifically that they do not want the notes and minutes of meetings (pages 2, 11, 13, 15, 17, 18, 19 and lastly 24:
I do not see how much formally the GAO can request the documents they seek stating specifically that they do not want notes and meetings that are of such particular concern to the Vice President.
As well, CNN reported on their website the story:
Clearly, CNN knows the difference. The New York Times reported on Saturday:
Then, today, just now while writing this letter I looked up the transcripts for this mornings news on CNN. Here is what I have found, again, Major Garrett reporting from the Whitehouse:
There he is on national television reading the lawsuit and deliberately leaving out the information that the GAO submitted a letter on August 17 and "reconfirmed and made clear that GAO no longer sought either the minutes or notes of meetings that NEPDG staff or the Vice President had had with individuals to gather information relevant to NEPDG's work, or any of the information presented at those meetings." page 17 of the lawsuit. The prayer for relief specifically says so again as noted above on page 24.
These distinctions go to the heart of the lawsuit and the misinformation put out by the Whitehouse are repeated as fact by the Major Garrett to deliberately misinform the public.
Also, CNN reported that
The GAO requested these documents last spring. The Enron scandal had not arisen at all. Its stock was still quite high back then. Enron was one of the companies that had met with the task force but the reasons for filing the lawsuit have nothing to do with the collapse of Enron or any allegation of wrong doing by the administration in connection with the collapse of Enron. Vice President Cheney is also responsible for distorting the truth when he stated on camera that the GAO had decided not to go through with their request until after Enron collapsed. In fact, as the lawsuit states: paragraph 41 & 42, pages 19 and 20.
When I called I asked Public Information of CNN who has jurisdiction over such blatant distortion of the news, I was told the "FCC." The world counts on correct reporting of the news and I find this incident of distortion concerning the General Accounting Office's first lawsuit in history against the Vice President of the United States as being severely delinquent and flagrant and must be stopped! If you can do anything about the Vice President's distortion of the news please do so since he is just as liable for misusing the medium of broadcast services.
Please find attached all transcripts of which I have cited.
files unprecedented suit against Cheney
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- In an unprecedented move against a sitting vice president, the investigative arm of Congress filed a federal court suit Friday challenging Vice President Dick Cheney's refusal to hand over documents related to national energy policy.
The British are certainly impressed with dubya's visit to China. Where is the Amurcan press on this?
China also responded to Mr Bush's calls to allow greater religious freedom by arresting 47 Christians in Beijing, for what it described as forming an illegal gathering, during his visit.
Subj: "Cheney raised funds on the lam" should be top story.
I really think that the "Veep on the Lam attended fundraisers"
story should be promoted to near the top of your page, probably it should
be the headline story. Furthermore as soon as I finish writing this I'm
going over to MWO message board and try to get a letter-writing campaign
going to get the broadcast media to give this story the attention it deserves.
Attending the Petroleum Club's $1,000-a-head fundraiser when he was supposed to be in hiding was obviously a flagrant violation of national security; clearly fundraising is more important to Cheney than our country's best interests. Furthermore, the fact that the Bush Admin crassly claimed they were hiding Cheney from public view in order to protect America, when really they were just trying to hide the uncomfortable fact that Cheney was whoring for Big Oil dollars, is unforgivable and shows how manipulative of the public trust this Administration really is.
I swear to God, if this story gets the type of coverage it deserves from the mainstream media, the type of coverage that it would be receiving if this was the Clinton Administration, it single-handedly will cost the Usurper 10 percentage points off his approval rating.
Alan Sorkin has the courage to tell the truth. Something I find seriously lacking in the news from mainstream today. Contrary to the current illusion being perpetrated by some in the press, Bush is the same man who avoided serving his country in Viet Nam, did some questionable stock trading, was a mediocre cheerleader, doesn't know the names of foreign leaders or the policies of their countries, repeats phrases borrowed from others ad nauseum, was arrested for DUI, has no clue as to what's best for domestic economics, and last but certainly not least does not possess the intellect to be president of the United States! Hooray for Sorkin, we need more people like him to speak out and tell the American people the truth.
I am sure you know what Drudge has posted regarding Mr. Sorkin of the "West Wing..," and his interview in the New Yorker. All the people who have criticized him are anonymous.
I think it would be a good thing if you would ask your readers to support Mr. Sorkin with E Mails and phone calls, as the Republicans are probably already demanding that "West Wing" be taken off the air. If you have the E Mail address, would you please post it.
