Subject: Is death from a bullet in the heart also called lead poisoning?
The reporting that Mr. Whittington had a ‘heart attack’ is patently misleading, and quite honestly undermines both the reality and the seriousness of the actual traumatic event. The image created to the untrained reader is that the ‘peppering’ of Mr. Whittington with bird shot was so stressful to this 78 year old gentleman that it precipitated a cardiac event or vascular occlusion of the coronary vessels that resulted in the infarction or death of heart muscle. Calling the penetration of the cardiac musculature by a metallic foreign body ‘bird shot’ a heart attack is like reporting that someone who is shot in the heart with a bullet and expires, that this person has died of lead poisoning. The devil is in the details, and in this case the death of heart muscle caused by a penetrating bird shot pellet is not a heart attack, but rather a gunshot wound. The general reporting of this event is misleading, and it undermines the actual event - namely that the Vice President shot, presumably accidentally, this gentleman in the heart. We all need less obfuscation and more truthiness from the media. Lord only knows the Bush administration is incapable of anything that approximates honesty.

Subject: Attacking and Bombing Iran
In all the stories being written about the United States' administration's aggressive stance on the nuclear capabilities of Iran, no one has included the resulting horrors of bombing any nuclear installation that Iran may, or more likely, probably doesn't have. Does anyone remember what happened when the nuclear reactor in Chernobyl exploded? It devastated not only miles of land surrounding it, but it has severely affected the health and well-being of all the people who lived within the range of immediate devastation as well as killing plant life and irradiating the soil, etc. so that nothing can live there in health anymore for decades to come.
Should Bush and his blood-thirsty crew pull off the lie of the century (after the Iraq lies), he will have the military bomb with mini nukes or bunker busters. They have enough nuclear energy in them to collectively go beyond the damage, death and carnage of Hiroshima and Nagasake. Add that to the radiation from the reactor itself and the fallout will be disastrous for the Middle East, and given weather systems, possibly most of the continent.
Iraq is already irradiated from the depleted uranium and surely the wind has helped to spread that to other Middle Eastern nations. The Bush administration is considering what is, for all intents and purposes, a genocidal attack on a sovereign nation that many believe has NO ability at this time to make nuclear weapons.
U.S. Instigated Iran's Nuclear Policy In the '70s (Common Dreams/Providence Journal)
Will you help kill thousands of innocent civilians as has been done in Iraq, or will you do something to stop your imperial president and his "cabal" from precipitating an event that may prove to be cataclismic to the Middle East, if not the rest of the world? He is the number one terrorist on this globe we call home, and his reign must end.
Subject: Only Option (for Ordinary People)
I completely agree with Barbara in N. Y. We must take to the streets in the millions in the hope of getting our moribund press and TV news "journalists" off their fannies. A general strike-where it'll hurt the neocons the most-is, in my opinion, a must as well. Something is very wrong when a mountain of factual evidence points to treason, war crimes, crimes against humanity, election fraud, and unlawful spying on American citizens, and the culprits continue to get off scot-free. In 1970, a rock group known as Chicago had 2 songs on their fifth album which are germane to our times. One began with the words: "While the city sleeps, men are scheming, new ways to kill us, and tell us dirty lies." Another (dialogue) ended with the words: "Well, if you had my outlook, your feelings would be numb; you'd always think that everything was fine." Creepy, huh?

Subject: Republic vs Democracy - T. Hartmann Is Right!
Re. the issue BuzzFlash brought up in the Thom Hartmann interview:
he's right - Republic and Democracy mean virtually the same thing, only one is Latin and the other is Greek.
Latin: Res Publica (literally: "according to the people thing," meaning government by the people)
Greek: Demos Kratos (literally: "people power," meaning government by the people)
The Republicans who keep writing in need a history lesson!!
Thanks for all you do!

Subject: Leaving the Democratic Party
I am disturbed to read on BuzzFlash and other sites that some Democrats are planning to leave the party to become Independents. I hope they reconsider. Although the party seems to have lost its way and frustration is understandable, it isn't going to help to split up the vote. Look at what Nader did in 2000. We will not defeat the Republicans if we don't stick together.

Subject: The "Democrat" Party
Reader Stephen McArthur complained about the GOP use of the term, "Democrat" Party. BuzzFlash then added a footnote saying, "Thom Hartmann recently reminded us that the 'Democrat' Party thing was a GOP strategy cooked up in the Gingrich days, because 'Democratic' polls more favorably." However, that is incorrect. I'm almost 65 years old, and I can remember that term being used by the GOP back in the 1950s, when Wisconsin Senator Joe McCarthy was running wild. And the Grand Hypocrisy Party has been saying it ever since.
Subject: Be careful about Saddam story!
I'd be careful about this alleged Saddam/Aziz tape story. Smells like BS to me. If anyone thinks the timing and circumstances of the "bin Laden" tapes is fishy, think hard about this one, too.
Why should we believe this - or any other story - that comes from our government?
Whoa! Saddam Hussein told aides in the mid-1990s that he warned the United States it could be hit by a terrorist attack, ABC News reported Wednesday, citing 12 hours of tapes the network obtained of the former Iraqi dictator's talks with his Cabinet.
Mike in Spokane
[BuzzFlash Note: The tapes are something like 10 years old. The CIA found them (in 2003?). Since then, a weapons inspector/translator and the FBI and ABC News got them? Your skepticism seems well-placed.]

Subject: Looking for a leader who represents us
Yahoo seems to have removed the article, but somewhere out there is a piece on how Russ Feingold is still trying to stop the renewal of the Patriot Act. He is pretty much alone, the rest of our "leaders" no longer fighting.
There may be things I don't know about Feingold, but right now he seems to represent those of us who loathe the so-called Patriot Act, eavesdropping, and warmongering better than any other well-known potential candidate.
If anyone has info that would make his candidacy problematic, please send it in, lest a few of us start our pre-primary work in the coming weeks.

We have always been known for a two-party system, now we are three major parties. Democrat, (for the people) Republican (for the corporations) and Republicrat (for themselves and republicans), though voted in by democrats.
The Final Question…
How long will it be before we see this Administration up on Charges of Treason and brought before the Hague for War Crimes and Crimes Against Humanity?
This is quite a list and can no doubt be added to. See how many more you can add.
Nuff said…for now.

Subject: Selling Our Ports
How can this be? How can it be OK to give control of our ports to a foreign company, let alone one in a nation with ties to 9/11?
Senator Schumer was just on television voicing his concern about this. He basically said there was a committee, that nobody ever heard of, that o.k.'d this proposal in the middle of the night!!! Where is everyone else? Where is the big outcry? I would think that everyone would be just as, or even more, upset about this than we were about the Chinese Co. that tried to buy Chevron. That was oil. This is about security against threats coming directly through our 'Ports of Entry.' It should be against the law! NOW!
Subject: the media
i am an independent, i swing both ways (only politically) :):):) i have to tell you why the media is so far to the right but won't admit it. the republicans and fox news operate like fire ants, you do something they don't like, they attack fast and furious. dan rather lost his job after one of those attacks. the media does not want to be dan rathered. no one wants to go up against this white house. it is dangerous. even republican congress and senate jump when the bush people say frog. no investigation? oh, ok, no problem. we will take your word for it. can you imagine that as a democrat congress senate and white house? :):):) the democrats wouldn't be able to survive. :):):)
Subject: When the Facists Won
Many people call the current GOP administration 'fascists.' The many comparisons to fascism are apt, however, references to Laurence Britt's 14 Points of Fascism are ignored by the GOP.
Maybe a concrete example would be better understood than a list, which may be confused as 'too abstract.'
I have just finished reading 'The Spanish Civil War' by Anthony Beevor, which covers exactly how the fascists took control of an entire country.
I would recommend it to anyone who wants to learn more about history and fascism.
Here are some of the similarities (that I noticed) between what happened then (1930's Spain) and what is happening now (America under the GOP):
1. The Nationalists (Franco's movement) had full support of the traditional rulers of Spain: the church, the wealthy landowners and the military (with the exception of a very small portion of the navy).
2. Whereas, the Republicans (those who supported the Constitutional government overthrown by the military) had support from artisans, laborers and the educated (the vast majority of the population).
3. The Republicans were splintered, with socialists, communists and anarchists fighting amongst themselves.
4. The Nationalists were unified because they all eagerly wanted to return to the days before liberalism, when they had total power.
5. The Nationalists used propaganda to frighten and confuse potential international supporters of the Republicans.
6. The Republicans believed they would recieve international support if only other people knew what they stood for and what they were fighting for. (Sadly, after the defeat of Hitler, the Spanish people mistakenly believed the world would help them put their legitimate government back into power, but no one did, and he stayed in power until his death in 1975.)
While there are differences between America in the 1990's and Spain in the 1920's (the eras 'before'), the similarities are so numerous that I feel I cannot do them justice in less than 400 words.
The best I can do is recommend the book and this website:
These sources can help explain not just how fascism could maintain control over people, but how they could get into power in the first place.

Subject: Paul Hackett
Cannot the people of Ohio, write Paul Hackett's Name in, on primary day?
If they decide to write-in, make sure they have a stamp with his name on it, and stamp his name in an empty slot, especially there for him. Do not write in with pencil, or pen, because the other party will say, some were blurred, or some other excuse to throw away the vote. A special table can be set up for the write-in, and they will get an explaination on how to do the write-in from party members, who will man these tables.
We need Paul Hackett, and people like him in congress and senate. Only write-in is the way. The grass roots way.
Subject: CONFRONTING THE WHITE HOUSE'S "MONARCHICAL DOCTRINE"
More and more Americans of all political stripes are concerned that the Bush Administration has exceeded its legal authority by conducting intelligence surveillance outside of what the law permits.
Anxiety over illegal surveillance is heightened by the prospect that an ideologically subservient Congress may not insist on the primacy of law, but will simply defer to the Administration, or authorize whatever the White House wishes.
"The administration's stance that warrantless surveillance by the National Security Agency targeting American citizens on American soil is a legal exercise of the president's inherent powers as commander in chief, even though it violates the clear language of the 1978 Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act" is a "monarchical doctrine," wrote columnist George Will today.
"Monarchical" is a curse word in conservative thought, and for an American conservative monarchy is a provocation to revolutionary opposition.
"We cannot continue to claim we are a nation of laws and not of men if our laws, and indeed even the Constitution of the United States itself, may be summarily breached because of some determination of expediency or because the President says, 'Trust me'," said Sen. Robert Byrd in a Senate floor statement yesterday.
"I plead with the American public to tune in to what is happening in this country. Please forget the political party with which you may usually be associated and, instead, think about the right of due process, the presumption of innocence, and the right to a private life."
"This President, in my judgment, may have broken the law and most certainly has violated the spirit of the Constitution and the public trust," Sen. Byrd said.
In an unusual rebuke, the American Bar Association this week found it necessary to urge President Bush to comply with the law.
"The American Bar Association calls upon the President to abide by the limitations which the Constitution imposes on a president under our system of checks and balances and respect the essential roles of the Congress and the judicial branch in ensuring that our national security is protected in a manner consistent with constitutional guarantees."
