Subject: STOP Hans von Spakovsky NOW!

Call your senators! Raise holy hell!

This is something so far under the radar that calls to Chuck and Hillary (or Kerry and Kennedy) will probably really be noticed because they will be shocked that anyone bothered. Please call.

Bush to nominate voter suppression specialist to the Federal Election Commission

by david blue, Sat Dec 17, 2005 at 07:21:48 AM PDT

A big hat tip to Rick Hasen who noticed this White House press release (buried in the Friday night trash). President Bush is going to nominate Hans von Spakovsky to the Federal Election Commission.

Who?

Well, Hans von Spakovsky is a long-time activist in "voting integrity." Translated, he is a long-time activist in keeping people away from the polls. His ideas led to the notorious purge of Florida's voting rolls before the 2000 election in which thousands of mostly-eligible, mostly-Democratic, and mostly-minority voters were removed from the voting lists. Von Spakovsky also was a volunteer for Bush in the Florida recount. Want more? It's all here.

This guy is a disaster. There is no way he should be on the FEC. FEC Commissioners are subject to Senate approval, so write or call your Senator.

UPDATE: Several commenters have asked which Senate committee holds hearings on FEC nominees. It is the Committee on Rules and Administration. Chair is Trent Lott; ranking Dem is Christopher Dodd. Other Dems are Byrd, Inouye, Feinstein, Schumer, Dayton, Durbin, and Ben Nelson; other Republicans are Ted Stevens, Mitch McConnell, Thad Cochran, Santorum, K.B. Hutchison, Frist, Chambliss, Bennett, and Hagel. Some heavy hitters on both sides.

Subject: Impeachment Ain't Gonna Work--at Least Not Yet

So, miracle of miracles, the Moron in Thief is impeached. And miracle of a miracle of miracles, Darth Vader is indicted and resigns. Then you have to check on the 27th Amendment line of succession which couldn't be more dismal--at least before the 2006 elections. It goes like this:

Speaker of the House John Dennis Hastert

President pro tempore of the Senate Ted Stevens

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice

Secretary of the Treasury John Snow

Secretary of Defense Donald H. Rumsfeld

Attorney General Alberto Gonzales

Secretary of the Interior Gale A. Norton

Secretary of Agriculture Mike Johanns

Secretary of Commerce Carlos Gutierrez

Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao

Secretary of Health and Human Services Mike Leavitt

Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Alphonso Jackson

Secretary of Transportation Norman Yoshio Mineta

Secretary of Energy Samuel Bodman

Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings

Secretary of Veterans Affairs Jim Nicholson

Secretary of Homeland Security Michael Chertoff

Neither Gutierrez nor Chao is eligible because they were born outside the country. In late July 2005, the Senate passed a bill moving the Homeland Security secretary to number 8 on the list. The bill is awaiting House approval.

Has John Snow kept his nose clean recently? Can progressives live with a 'Snot--er, Snow" job?

Subject: Disagreement With Your Email...details...

You said: "So DeLay is linked to the Bush circle of corruption and omerta big time."

And I'll agree with the corruption statement, but the OMERTA? No...

There's no "Code of Silence" once their own asses are on the line and you know it. Abramoff is singing like a f***ing tweety bird just to save his own ass. Congressional GOPers are diving for cover from the noxious W and Dick. It's truly a "Lord of the Flies" situation and Porky's name in this case is W.

Subject: New York Times Complicit In Bush's Winning 2004 Election

Dear Buzz,

Let’s make it perfectly clear. This article you have posted shows that the NY Times sat on the spying/eavesdropping story during the presidential election of 2004.

Subject: The Illogical Logic of the Republicans

More and more the Republicans resemble second graders on a schoolhouse playground, little children trying to lie there way out of trouble. And just like an immature child their logic is totally illogical. When questioned as to why they did something their first line of defense is the childish, “Well Johnny did it too!” defense. No matter what the issue is, “Well the Democrats did it too!” Then like children they go into some twisted, illogical rambling in an attempt to justify their actions.

Their latest claim is that the FISA court is bogged down and it takes too long to process the paperwork. Then they go into their Republican strategy of involving 9-11 and fear and claim that any delay will cost the lives of Americans. The problem is their arguments are always a string of Republican talking points, many of which are flat out lies, that simply can not be linked together into any coherent defense.

Case in point, they claim that other Presidents (“the Democrats did it too!”) have used NSA to spy on Americans but the examples they use of Clinton and Carter doing the same DO NOT support their claim and are misrepresented to the point of, guess what? A FLAT OUT LIE.

And their claim that American lives will be lost because of this delay in processing paperwork at FISA is simply dim-witted. If there truly is a backlog and a delay in processing paperwork at FISA, which has NOT been substantiated, the delay would be in processing the paperwork submitted AFTER the fact. There is NO delay in actually performing the wiretap and gathering information because they have the authorization to do that prior to obtaining a warrant.

Subject: Is the Truth Finally Coming Out?

They are NOT interested in protecting our rights, freedoms and liberties, as Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, would have us believe. They aren't the LEAST bit interested in our collective national security and safety. What they are protecting so fiercely is their carefully crafted, master illusion that we all operate under on a daily basis. As we are BOMBARDED with misinfotainment, glittering celebrities throwing fluff at us, they continue to try to keep us as a people in the dark about their real interests and agendas. Put the people in the corner, give them toys and bobbles to play with and keep them occupied while we RAPE, PILLAGE and PLUNDER foreign societies and governments.

Any criminal investigator will tell you in assessing the criminal mind and investigating crimes, FOLLOW the MONEY and look for means, motive and opportunity. People, they don't WANT us asking all the right questions or putting things together. The more we begin asking the hard questions and playing connect the dots, the more their giant smokescreen is threatened. As long as we have an extremely secretive administration in power that CONDONES and ADVOCATES TORTURE, as long as we have secret prisons, and obnoxious tax cuts to the rich while gutting social safety nets, as long as we have internal spying on peaceful domestic groups and continuous passing of totalitarian legislation IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT, I refuse to believe that we are a free people operating in a free society with protected rights and liberties as those in power continue to tell us.

There IS one thing we have working in our favor. Cheney, Rumsfeld, Rice, Bush, Wolfowitz, DRUNK with power, swaggering arrogantly, getting careless and EVENTUALLY showing their true colors, tipping their hand. We are starting to see that now with the cowboy president strutting to the podium and admitting on National TV that he truly believes no law applies to him. As with Rome, so goes the way of Bush and company.

Subject: Christmas

This is part of a letter I sent to my local newspaper last week.

What is happening to the Christmas spirit? Dec. 25th has long been a time of good fellowship, family time together and exchanging gifts. Now there is a campaign by people like Jerry Falwell, who is cautioning his followers not to shop at stores which advertise “Happy Holidays” instead of Merry Christmas. John Gibson and Bill O’Reilly of Fox News are saying that the celebration of Christmas is being assaulted by schools and local politicians, that it has reached a shocking level and the ACLU is trying to take Christmas away from the public square. Pat Buchanan wrote in a recent column about hate crimes against Christianity and the fear and loathing of all things Christian. Even our born again president is being criticized for sending White House Christmas cards with the words Christmas missing.

This is part of the paranoia of people who believe our schools deny the right of students to pray and that we should teach creationism or intelligent design instead of science to our students. They forget the tremendous influence they have with the president. He has supported faith-based institutions and has even suggested that intelligent design should be taught in the schools. Let us continue to believe that we live in a diverse society with diverse viewpoints and there is a place for the celebration of Christmas as Christmas, without listening to the zealots who want to tell us we are being denied our rights.

Hey Bill,

In your WAR ON CHRISTMAS research, did you read this?

WASHINGTON - In the final clashes of a year of partisan conflict, Senate Republicans suffered defeat in their drive to open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil drilling on Wednesday, but salvaged a $39.7 billion package of deficit cuts on Vice President Dick Cheney's tie-breaking vote.

Subject: What's on Cheney's ipod?

I vote for odd mix of death metal--which might include but actually have no idea on the genre but dude got to have some hardcore stuff on pod to bang to as he huffs amyl nitrates and oven cleaner thinking of more and better ways to create chaos and disaster: Sepultera, Rammstein, Manson, Pantera--and who knew Cheney listens to Rage Against the Machine 'cause they the only band that really saw through his soul destroying plans.

Not surprisingly, he also has full set of Wagner operas for the nights Lynne wants him in the Valkyrie costume.

What else?  Everyone can play.

NOTEBOOK: Cheney Flies in Comfort (AP/Yahoo)

[Nedra Pickler writes for the Associated Press with more tidbits from Cheney's recent trip. I mentioned on Monday that for the flight into Baghdad, the Air Force loaded an Airstream trailer into the belly of a C-17 cargo plane for Cheney and his top aides.

Pickler has more on that and on how during the flight home last night on his traditional 757, most of the electric outlets went on the fritz.

"Working passengers began lining up their laptops to share the power from a couple of working outlets - particularly the reporters who urgently needed to prepare their articles to transmit during a quick refueling stop in England.

"But when Cheney said his iPod needed to be recharged, it took precedence above all else and dominated one precious outlet for several hours. The vice president's press staff intervened so a reporter could use the outlet for 15 minutes to charge a dead laptop, but then the digital music device was plugged back in."]

Subject: 2006 Election

We have a problem within the democratic party. They came into control of the party when Clinton was elected. Most of these dems belong to a group known as the Democratic Leadership Council. Members include among others, the Clintons, Sen Evan Bayh, Sen Joe Biden, etc. You get the drift. These people believe that the party needs to move to the middle. For example; Hillary Clinton is signed onto a flag desecration law in the senate. Many voted for the bankruptcy law that turns the courts into collection agencies for the financial industry. Some support pro life ideology. These so-called "democrats" presently in office need to be removed.

Every bit as important as the republicans' removal is the replacement of conservative dems in the house and senate. Democrats who still support having our troops in Iraq must go. If possible we need to support the campaigns across the country including dem primary candidates who represent the true ideologies of liberal democrats and progressives. I do this by sending donations to congressional district candidates across the country where we need a change, be it dem or rep change. My donations are rarely over 5 or 10 $'s. Please do what you can to save our country...
