The BuzzFlash Mailbag The opinions expressed in the Mailbag are not necessarily those of BuzzFlash. Read the BuzzFlash FAQ for info on submitting to the Mailbag. Subject: File under D for "Duh" The Crypt Keeper of Bush's dirtiest secrets on the Supreme Court? Gaping conflict. BAD idea. Your pal, Erin Subject: The Only Hope for the Democrats to Win the White House Having lived in various countries, I have seen too many times that, when you have weak candidates for an elected office, the other side wins. Also having owned, published, and edited many newspapers for over 50 years, I know how the media can be twisted. So I plan on starting a petition to convince the DNC Chairman Howard Dean, to run for President. There are so many things the Democrats can do, but won't, to get elected. Instead I believe they don't want to offend anyone by pulling some of the legal stunts that the Republicans have done to get elected. Further, I strongly believe that the only one capable of winning is Howard Dean. Sincerely, Donald Warren Clarke Subject: Miers a Bush crony with a highly questionable past Her judicial credentials are appallingly thin, but what is known is that she is a loyal corporatist who will put the rights of corporations ahead of the rights of individuals to unionize and ahead of the rights of individuals to have a clean environment and safe consumer products. What is also known about her record is that she is emblematic of the Enron style crony capitalism that infects the Bush administration where "business" is done by an interlocking web of back scratching insiders who give a wink and a nod to each other's fraudulent practices and there is no heed nor regard paid to the rule of law, to which everyone else must adhere. A person who is a product of such a corrupt culture with a background such as this has no business sitting on the nation's highest court interpreting laws. From David Sirota:
Dan D. Subject: Bush Appointing Cronies to Jobs Hey, Mister Bush! Somebody told me if I did a good job mowing your yard, you'd give me a lifetime job as a Supreme Court Judge! Is that true? Mike Curtis Subject: Not-so-intelligent Design I couldn't agree more with something I'd read regarding the aforementioned: that, if scientists don't plead from the pulpit, "Please, hear OUR side as well," why do fundamentalist Christians who believe in "intelligent design" INSIST that their side be represented in schools across the country? Is it because, just MAYBE, that the so-called "Godless scientists" have more respect for peoples' religious faith than the ultra-religious have for science? Which group, then, ironically, is the more charitably "Christian" of the two? Makes you think... Lisa Subject: Economic Disaster Sometime in the past, I read an article that talked about the possibility of our big insurance companies going bankrupt if disasters happened in several major urban centers within a very short time period, and discussed the probable resulting financial collapse. This was before baby bush and the Republicans weakened our country through their out-of-control deficits, cronyism, and corruption. How much less would it now take for our financial systems to fold? Does anyone with more knowledge of economics than I have care to comment on this? R. M. Johnson Subject: A blueprint for action Harriet Miers can and should be opposed vehemently by Senate Democrats. She is the Michael Brown of judicial appointments, picked not because of ability but because of her unyielding loyalty and personal fealty to Mr. Bush. She even remarked famously that Bush was one of the brightest people that she knew. Though that statement alone is enough to call her ability to make rational judgments into question, there are a host of other reasons why she is a terrible choice for this position. Chief among them is her background of unswerving devotion to championing the rights of corporations over individuals, which means that she, like Roberts, will support laws that restrict workers' rights, restrict consumers' rights and eviscerate environmental protections. She will join Scalia and Thomas and Roberts in their attempts to roll back Roosevelt's New Deal. She will also be a loyal and reliable vote against civil rights, against individual liberties and in favor of unfettered Presidential discretion. In sum she will be an utter disaster for the lives of ordinary Americans. However, she is not appointed yet and is still subject to the Senate confirmation process. It is clear that during this process the Republicans will once more stonewall and hide her records from scrutiny so her true ultracorporate ultraconservative agenda does not become known to the American people. It is imperative therefore that we contact each Senate Democrat, and those Republicans that claim to be moderate like Lincoln Chafee, and demand that they stand firm and unyielding and demand records relating to her legal work at the White House and probe into her background representing corporate clients and involvement in highly questionable shady corporate maneuverings. The Democrats simply cannot cave in on this appointment and allow it to go through unchallenged, else if they do they may as well pack up shop and go home since they no longer serve any useful purpose. Write them at senate.gov and forward them a copy of this article if they tell you they have no basis on which to challenge her appointment. This article contains a veritable plethora of reasons why she can and must be opposed. Dems' Non-Ideological Case Against Harriet Miers (Common Dreams) Dan D. Subject: Forward Ever Backward Never. That was the rallying cry of The Grenadian Revolution (REVO) twenty-six years ago. It held for a while but then it blew apart, with an assist from the a neighboring nation to the north, of course. It so happens way back then that in the hearts and minds of many (not all) Grenadians that cry had the same kind of inspirational effect on each of their lives as Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death had on the lives of our founding mothers and fathers. This is mentioned here and now because of a certain sense of dismay, hopelessness and, yes, as much as it hurts, a touch of fatalism discerned in yesterday's Mailbox, a very unusual occurrence, given that BuzzFlash may be the closest we are to another sort of world. The feel of it, at least with momentary zoom-ins on what it will be like when everyone's pulling together to change the world. Seems each Mailbox contributor is right-on when it comes to her or his personal analysis and when it's a matter of summing-up, the big picture stuff, it's always so real and clear. At any rate no need to worry folks because if there really was any tilt in yesterday's Mailbox towards the gloom-doom, it must have been due to the fact that there's this tremendous contradiction between how incredibly much we all know about the powers that be, what they're up to, where and when the next dirty deed, and our willingness to do anything about it. We're sort of in a hold position, trying to figure out what to do next. This brings to mind a few more of REVOs magical words - "The Future Coming Towards Us" We the people best be ready. A BuzzFlash Reader Subject: just wondering (sent to corporate media) So if Hillary becomes president, will it be ok if she were to nominate her own personal lawyer to serve on the supreme court? how about if she were to nominate a lawyer who has argued for the ACLU? I mean, after all, just because he or she may have argued one way for a client does not mean that is their personal view, as the republicans have said over and over. Hope they all have to eat their own words in years to come. Sharon Swift oh please......... the conservatives who have come out against that miers woman have been told to do so! that way it will make her look moderate. you can't trust anything out of this white house anymore! kate Subject: What Will It Take? Hello again BuzzFlash and Buzzers, I want to begin by issuing an apology for an incorrect statement I made in a letter to you several months ago regarding George Galloway. After Mr .Galloway took our collective breath away blasting Senator Coleman with nothing but the pure truth, several mainstream media outlets referred to Galloway as a Scotsman. In a replay of one of George Galloway's recent speeches on his speaking tour around this country last month, Mr. Galloway referred to himself as an Irishman. I had called him a Scotsman in my previous letter to you regarding him so now I want to set that matter straight. Scotsmen and Irishmen traditionally do NOT appreciate being mistaken for each other. NOW, having said that, I also wanted to share that I am not vengeful or vindictive by nature but there are times, in my moments of rage, that I find myself hoping that Bush will go down in history, referred to always, and mentioned often, as the faux president who played golf while babies and elderly DROWNED in the streets of New Orleans.here was a moment when a radio station I had on played an excerpt from one of Bush's speeches (I try not to listen to Bush at ALL if I can help it) and as USUAL, Bush was using the word "terrorist" yet again in an effort to keep the American people afraid. I found myself cynically thinking that I need to design a bumper sticker saying "WARNING, this property and vehicle fiercely guarded by TERRORISTS using hurricanes!" (no disrespect to the hurricane victims intended). However, MOST of all, these days, I find myself struggling to cope with a seriously broken heart as strive, in my own small way, to try and make this country and the world a safer, healthier, better place for my children and their children's children. As an activist, writer, research assistant, and single mother to two small children, I deeply appreciate BuzzFlash and the other progressive sites that keep me from feeling so alone. Thank you BuzzFlash. Dominie K. Robinson Subject: Harriet Miers Dear BuzzFlash: Question - has Bush nominated Harriet Miers to the Supreme Court to shield her now/in the future from testifying against Bush? As a Supreme Court Justice, would Miers be exempt from prosecution, being party to any lawsuits, indicted under a grand jury? As Plamegate and other scandals get closer to Bush, Rove, Cheney et al., she KNOWS a lot about where the bodies are buried. A BuzzFlash Reader Subject: Iraq Nonsense Hi, Buzz!! I am getting more and more nauseated every time I hear one of the Reich say we have to "fight them in Iraq so we don't have to fight them here." The Brits are fighting them in Iraq, too, and that didn't keep the bombers from hitting London in July. Or maybe the Bushies weren't paying attention? Maybe W was taking a nap when that happened and nobody bothered to check whether he'd read the memo? Why do they continue to think we're not wise to them? WHAT IS THE MATTER WITH THESE PEOPLE? Jane Hawes Subject: Rudy Giuliani??? Most people...even democrats...likely remember Rudy Giuliani as the stalwart mayor who stood tall during the 911 catastrophe! Sort of like Bush...whose ratings went through the ceiling?? Me...I remember him from the day that Donna Hanover, his wife, came out to the mic..and told the world that Rudy had another woman...but, she and the children were not leaving the mansion. I think the kids were 2 and 4 maybe. So 911 came along...and his ratings went up and most people of America forgot all about his affair. Dems. and reps...alike thought he was a tower of strength. If many of you remember....it happened near Clinton's office...and he was on camera, too, consoling people...but, really at that time...to the American people and the right wing...he was just trying to upstage everyone else. Then, comes a restraining order against Rudy...that Donna had filed! The judge told him he could no longer bring his girlfriend into Gracie Mansion....you see, Donna was living in one wing and he was living in the other....much like the White House. The taxpayers of New York pay for it (and he was bringing the girlfriend to the Mansion). Now, when I am in a crowd or in a chat room....It is great to tell people that when they want Giuliani to run for president in 2008. I have them check out the story...so they know I am not making it up. And, I never hear from them again. After all, what Rudy did, made Bill Clinton look like a boy scout! Cannot wait for the 2008 election to come around...there are some people in my own family....and in this neck of the woods...circle of friends. ...who will love it when I tell them this. The problem I have found with people...is...that they will repeat what their Drinkin' buddies tell them and play along. They likely do not have a clue as to what Rudy has done, they just remember that he was that tower of strength during 911....and he was...but, if a personal failing can bring you down....he will be brought down! Shirley.............St. Louis Subject: "Compassionate conservatism" in all of its true ugliness As we have seen recently, so starkly demonstrated by the criminal negligence of this maladministration in responding to the devastation of New Orleans, the poor, the elderly, indeed anyone who is not a millionaire is deemed expendable by Bush and his cronies. Their callous indifference to human suffering knows no bounds. In about as heartless a maneuver as one can imagine Mr. Bush, the alleged compassionate conservative Christian, is cutting the amount of assistance the elderly will receive with their heating bills this winter. With natural gas and heating oil prices escalating significantly senior citizens and low income people are going to be severely devastated by these twin blows. But of course the Pretender in Chief does not care one whit, as long as oil and gas companies get their precious tax breaks which he promised them and worked so hard to get for them, that is all that matters. Let the senior citizens and the poor freeze in the dark is their motto. So much for the "culture of life." Once more they are exposed as the rank, lying hypocrites that they are. Billions in tax breaks for oil companies that are already pillaging the consumer and raking in obscene profits, but not one red cent for those who will be facing a life and death choice of heating or eating this winter. By their deeds ye shall know them, and these deeds speak volumes about their true character and true regard for human life.
Dan D. Subject: Would You Buy a Used Car from This Man? This is an excerpt from today's (4th October) NYT -
'Trust him on this one'? Dear U S of A, Republican or Democrat (sort-of-the-same), does that statement make you piss your pants with fear or laughter? (ending with you pissing your pants). A BuzzFlash Reader Subject: Repukes Is Stupid Repukes are THIS stupid (step through this and try and refute the logic): (1) War time presidents are popular. (2) A good citizen should support their war time president. (3) What should a war time president do if he/she wants to be popular? (4) Therefore, good citizens promote war. NORMAL people (Democrats and most of the World) see right through this BULLS**T. Good citizens question what their "leaders" are doing!!!!!!! (Worthless repuke Sheeples are a disaster for our country, no wonder they don't like education) A BuzzFlash Reader Subject: Bush Speech 1. In his speech today Bush said again that he wants us to become Chile. 2. On the independence of the fed chair -- Greenspan actually worked on the campaigns of two republican presidents...Nixon and Ford...he worked with a guy named anderson constructing the lies for all of them and Reagan - he influenced the 'sales pitch' regarding the economics that have killed this country. It goes on and on... My favorite part is his condescending 'why don't they get it, little laugh that he did on every point - we are all just idiots to this rich prep #^&*% A BuzzFlash Reader Subject: UH OH! Bush: "Harriet Miers was the best person I could find?" T Dear Buzz: This from someone who made a joke -- looking under desks and rugs for the "weapons of mass destruction" -- the pretense which got us into Iraq, where Casey Sheehan and now close to 2000 other troops killed for no plausible reasons at all -- and never managed to "find" what didn't exist?? This is the person who can't find the way to extract us from Iraq before MORE unnecessary sacrifices are made?? This is the person who couldn't find a way to react to Katrina before so many poor people died unnecessarily?? This is the person who is still trying to find a way to kill Social Security and keep the medically uninsured in that permanent condition? The only things the Chimp in Chief has FOUND are his booze, his drugs, his mountain bike, the TV, and cronies to cover his butt. If Harriet Miers is the "best person" this idiot "could find," we're all in trouble. (Well, we already KNEW that, right?) Barb in Athens, GA Subject: Chalabi On "60 Minutes" last Sunday Chalabi was interviewed by Leslie Stahl. To summarize, he (who fell out of US favor) gets support from the Iraqis because of this "falling out" and is now Iraq's Oil Minister and in charge of procurements (contracts). Is it me or is there "something fishy" about all of this? He is now the "go to" man in Iraq and the US now likes him again. This is way too convenient for me. Name me one person who fell out of this Administration's favor who has prospered (with their blessings) to this degree. Hamid Karzai was involved with Unocal in Afghanistan and he is now in charge of their country and Unocal and the oil pipeline is safe for the US. Now our buddy, Chalabi, is in charge of Iraqi Oil. If I were Chavez in Venezuela, I would be very afraid. S. Jansen Subject: MORE CRONYISM FROM THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION http://www.absoluteastronomy.com/encyclopedia...
