The BuzzFlash Mailbag The opinions expressed in the Mailbag are not necessarily those of BuzzFlash. Read the BuzzFlash FAQ for info on submitting to the Mailbag. THIS IS PART 2 OF THE OCTOBER 3, 2005 BUZZFLASH MAILBAG. CLICK HERE FOR PART 1 Subject: [Re Miers] Oh, (censored). ANOTHER "pig in a poke" they'll shove down our throats Dear Buzz -- This crooked (censored, censored) group (I won't even dignify them with the term "administration") will, as I've often said, stop at nothing. Again, Frist et al. are selling us a "pig in a poke" -- Frist actually said she had NO responsibility to discuss her views on Roe v. Wade, civil liberties, or other rights we progressives hold close to our hearts. I'm listening to her (on NPR) right now: Apparently, they've been programming her to echo John Roberts -- i.e., EVADE ALL SUBSTANTIVE ANSWERS!! Once again, I'm afraid (BE VERY AFRAID) that the old bait and switch, or the old carnival game (I've just heard about it; I'm not THAT old) of "guess which walnut shell the pea is under" will play itself out once again. And where the (BLEEP) are the Democrats??? I know I keep delivering basically the same message -- and I'm basically "preaching to the congregation" -- but WHO, if not the Stepford Democrats -- will STOP the wrecking of what's left of our country?? This is news still breaking, but another Bush crony -- just heard that her credentials include being "the President's personal attorney" (Oh, Lord!! Spare us!!!) -- joining the Supreme Court is enough to cause coronaries and strokes in us progressives. WHY ARE WE AMERICANS LETTING THIS HAPPEN???? This scenario is beginning to play out like one of Kafka's novels (that I read in college, long ago -- but they're becoming eerily relevant to our present political scene). Another AAARRRGGGHHH primal scream here. But thank the Universe for Buzz and other progressive sites. If we thought we were the lone voice howling in the wilderness, we'd all jump off the nearest cliff like lemmings. As Ben Franklin once said, "We must all hang together, or assuredly we shall all hang separately." (He said this at the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776.) And, yes, I had to look it up to get the exact quote. But he was on target then -- and even more so NOW. I really feel frustrated when I read about suggestions to "impeach" our Chimp in Chief. WE DO NOT HAVE THE MAJORITY REQUIRED. And even about half the Dems would cave. Anybody out there have any ideas on how to proceed? (I'm about to chew the curtains at the moment, out of sheer frustration, so PLEASE suggest something!!!) Barb in Athens, GA Subject: I Guess Corruption Trumps Ideology.....again For Bush and Cronies I Googled Harriet Miers, which Karen Hughes mentioned in her book as being the policy maker in White House. She was an attorney in Texas under Bush and was involved in the Texas Lottery and it awarding G-Tech the lottery contract despite another entity having a lower bid. She also was a party to similar shenanigans in Britain when Tony Blair's Govt gave Britain's lottery contract to G Tech despite Richard Branson's having a better bid. Could this be what Bush has on Blair?????? Check it out. Alice B. PS She was also instrumental in scrubbing shrubs National Guard records. Subject: Another Bush Crony? Questions concerning Harriet Miers. Reasons to be leery. 1. She is another Bush crony. 2. Jay Sekolow says he likes her because the president trusts her. 3. She has a brother who is with Spectra which is owned by UnitedHealth. 4. She has no reputation outside of Bush. 5. They wouldn't release records of when Roberts was council to the Bushes and it is doubtful they will release her records which is the only thing we would know about her. 6. Sen. John Cornyn, R, Texas, likes her which is a good reason to vote "NO". 7. Which ones of the Bush fiascos has she counselled Bush on? 8. How does she feel about torture? 9. She was with Exodus Ministries and there are several of those. We can hope she was with the one that helps people exit poverty and not homosexuality. 10. Bush said he would pick someone like Scalia and Thomas. 11. God was not mentioned during his nominating speech and she didn't thank God for the nomination. 12. He says she will not legislate from the bench which means only one thing to Bush, she will not be pro-choice, pro gay rights and will be for war for any reason. 13. What council has she given Bush because everything about him is going to hell in a handbasket? 14. They weren't allowed to ask about who Roberts represented because he didn't always agree with his clients, but he wouldn't say which ones. 15. If her council to the president is off limits, then there is nothing to ask her about and we will know zero. Karen Webb Subject: The Ultimate Cronyism With the nomination of Harriet Meyers to the Supreme Court of the United States Bush has pulled his biggest and most egregious act of cronyism. Word is that this woman is a very good lawyer. Good for her. What kind of a judge was she? Oh, she never has been a judge but she has been front and center to keep Junior out of trouble. This is just what we need on the highest court in the land. Another Bush Crony. Word is that Harry Reid is going to give a green light on this nomination. I guess “Give Em Hell Harry” has been replaced by “Give Em Whatever The Hell They Want Harry.” Does anyone, anywhere see a sign of an opposition party? Liberals in this country know that the Democratic Party has abandoned us. Another Bush loyalist on the Supreme Court means that our country and our way of life is in greater danger from within than it has ever been from without. If the Democratic Party cannot mount a cohesive and comprehensive fight against this woman, they need to stop any pretence of being able to do anything for the people who voted for them. Don’t pretend to represent us. You do not. You are so busy trying to straddle the fence the splinters go all the way to your brain. It will remain to be seen if the democrats manage to scrape up enough guts to oppose this latest Bush coup. This nomination is an overt and telling sign of Bush's contempt for the democrats. He outmaneuvers and outguns the Democratic Party at every turn. And he’s a moron. We are well and truly screwed. Marjorie L. Swanson Subject: Letter to the Editor - Miers has no Experience I'm concerned about Bush's pick of Harriet Ellan Miers for the Supreme Court because she has never been a judge. Bush seems to want to pick his personal friends for high positions instead of people who are experienced and competent. Why pick someone to be a judge on the Supreme Court who has never been a judge? That makes as much sense as Michael Brown being picked to be head of FEMA - and we know how that turned out. I'm Marc Perkel - And I approved this message! Marc Perkel JUST LIKE HECK OF A JOB BROWNIE.......NO EXPERIENCE NEEDED FOR JOBS THAT WILL AFFECT THE LIVES OF NEARLY 300 MILLION AMERICANS........JUST BE WILLING TO COVER BUSH'S ASS! karen massey Subject: Cronyism vs Affirmative Action What's the difference? How dare anyone support or defend such a pervasive hypocrisy in the GOP? Why aren't the opponents of affirmative action outraged with this administration's lack of hiring or promoting the most qualified without regard to race, religion, gender, CREED, etc.? A BuzzFlash Reader Subject: More Cake Walking Here we go with [Harriet] Miers for US Supreme Court. How are democrats going to turn her down when they passed John Roberts, who refused to answer any of their substantive questions? Miers will respond the Roberts way. Can you imagine any corporate Human Resource department hiring a candidate who didn't answer important questions? ... me neither. I don't know if Miers is a good lawyer or not, but how does one jump from Attorney to US Supreme Court without ever judging a legal case? Wouldn't that be like jumping from assistant secretary to Vice President of a business and without much administrative experience? If senators ask Miers what qualifies her to become a US Supreme Court member, we will never hear a clear answer. Attention Holiday Inns! Hire Miers for your next commercial... the ones where everyone listens to a person espouse how to fix a problem, only to admit they possess no experience whatsoever... but did stay at a Holiday Inn last night. Perfect... absolutely perfect! Cathy L. Subject: America, no more... I am very sorry. We support you all the way, but it seems like we have no chances. The stage is set. Bush will never be impeached. The Democrats are (for the great majority) sponsors of the government policies. I am from Brazil - where there is a lot of corruption, but right now, we are an example of democracy compared to the US. The forefathers must be having a fit. The US is not the same country... I am very sorry. I feel your pain. I don't know what can be done, as the majority of Americans seem to be either brainwashed or brain dead... Keep up the screaming, we will keep up telling people about BuzzFlash. A BuzzFlash Reader Subject: Bennett Resignation Statements by K12 Inc. and William J. Bennett Regarding Bennett's Resignation from the K12 Board of Directors (PR NewsWire) A BuzzFlash Reader Subject: Bush's Government of Cobwebs! Bush’s cobweb government has a history of catching the small, but letting the large and more powerful escape time and time again! The endless list includes Downing Street memo, Plamegate, Harken, lies, ignored prewar intelligence, denied documents, unanswered questions, the government investigating themselves, and much more as we all know! Bush/Rove/ Republican/Media Machine has an advanced designed braking system that has been employed to cut off discussion, use diversion, blame others, and making the visible, in time, become invisible. Even a demonstration of over 300,000 U.S. citizens becomes unseen as Cheney calls us non-existent! Remember when over 250,000 protestors demonstrated at the last Republican convention in New York, the streets were filled as far the eye could see--then poof, with little mention from the press and submerged coverage, people and their messages disappeared before the very eyes of our nation. The Bush government’s level of incompetence raises the bar in comparison to any incompetent previous Administrations. With little checks and balances we have seen more danger of abuse as their power grows greater. Even the sheeple from the Democrats seem not to understand that you cannot run with the hare and hunt with the hounds at the same time! Especially about Bush’s failure in the Iraq War! LET'S DO A LITTLE FOLLOW-UP! IN IRAQ… Iraq Town Yields Arms, Not Men (Washington Post) In the town of Sadah, the “Iron Fist” can not be used because like so many times before the insurgents left town.
IN AFGHANISTAN….. Bush has touted the first election and the second election to be a great success. In Afghanistan the first election was riddled with complaints with disappearing ink, bribery; and now the second election proves little has been gained. Reports from the area show the Taliban are still active, a few of them were candidates in this election,{they vow they have changed, yeah right} seven candidates were killed before this last election was underway, and voting fraud again has been discovered.
P.S. Where’s Osama? Very little has gone right since Bush has been in office. America waits to hear what will become of Tom DeLay, and if any higher-ups will be held accountable for the outing of Valerie Plame. There are too many hoof marks going in and NONE going out and the barn door has been closed in America’s face too many times!! We ask the truth about Iraq and why so many journalists have been killed. We want to know if the Bush government will succeed in protecting themselves in the torture, abuse, and rendition scandals, and if Congress will demand accountability. It’s time to clear away all the cobwebs of deceit. Susan Carr Subject: W's Supreme Court Pick If Bush participated in the outing of Valerie Plame and he is indicted for his involvement, then he will need the supreme court stacked with crony judges to get him off the hook. These judges will not recuse themselves from any cases involving W or Cheney. Bush will never be held accountable for any negligence or criminal behavior he may have committed. What if W decides that he wants to stay in office for the next 20-30 years? If he has stacked the courts with loyalists, who can stop him? After all, he was given the White House in 2000 by the courts. I imagine if one were to investigate the 2004 election one would learn that Kerry had actually won that election, too. It is not believable that the exit polls were that far off. The hope that any criminal indictment against DeLay, Rove, Abramoff, Cheney, Halliburton, or any Republican operative in their "club" will ever be held accountable is diminished by installing W's new judges. So much for living in a democracy or even a republic in the USA. The future of our citizens has been stolen from us and given to the rich, I fear. W. will now control all three branches of government as he had planned. I am saddened by this revelation and fear for my grandchildren's future. A BuzzFlash Reader Subject: Our Latest Supreme Court Nominee As my husband put it this morning, if Bush thinks she's the person for the job, there HAS to be something wrong with her. The words of a Marx Brothers song really sum up how I feel about this administration: "Whatever it is, I'm against it." A BuzzFlash Reader Subject: The sadness of the war...and chickenhawks! A sad, sad, story in the in the St. Louis Post Dispatch today. "Blast kills 'second family' for squads last marine" by Antonio Castaneda...too long...but a must read. It is the story of the entire reservist unit from Ohio, that went to check on the place where the Aug. 1st hit in the Anbar province...the Lima Company from Ohio. He named the men, his friends, and the fact that they were so young...one was a new father...one counting the days until his wedding...one had just celebrated his 20th birthday. All 14 men in this unit..., now dead. His misery at losing 14 of his best friends, so haunting, you could cut the torture with a knife. He says, they were like family...all living in a cramped room stacked with bunk beds, by the Euphrates river...Now the room had been stripped...the beds gone... they died in a roadside bomb set by Insurgents on Aug. 3rd.. Most of the squad were in their early 20's, the youngest 19. He studied photos that they had saved...on laptops...of children...of loved ones...one of the men played a guitar and sang "Puff the magic dragon" as the others laughed around him. Each video ends suddenly...and leaving a blank...when he cannot stand to look anymore. This call...was like all others...they were to hunt insurgents...and do house to house searches...in 120 degree heat. The space they were to cover...was an expanse the size of West Virginia, caught some of them off guard...it was after 6 marines had been killed on Aug. 1st......the squad with the company (Lima ) was sent in to search for the insurgents. Williams, the leader...said he never thought they would ever get engaged...He had the basic view of the American Public....it can't be that bad out there. One of the marine reservists...was antsy the night before...he could not sleep...trying to suppress worries that the mission was too predictable for an enemy who knew how to watch and learn. The road had been checked, Marine Commanders had told them...but the insurgents had been clever, hiding the bomb under the road's asphalt! The blast was so hard, that it threw a 26 ton amphibious assault vehicle into the air, leaving it burning upside down. Williams and Toland, in a humvee ahead...thought they had been hit. The insurgents, had been instructed to hit the vehicle with the most human lives. They scrambled out...to check and the blast has strewn the vehicle and all occupants all over the road...for miles. All fourteen were killed, including one Iraqi interpreter. They fanned out to check with other people...all Iraqis they talked to...were either too sympathetic to the insurgents or too afraid to talk He says...the first night after the attack (they managed to get as much of the bodies together to send home) he could not sleep...he stayed near the radio, listening to the heavy sobbing of his fellow marines that punctured the night around him. Marine Commanders say that the large scale raids in the western province have kept the insurgency off-balance...but among some marines and even officers...there are doubts that any progress has been made. Williams, a marine for three years...has decided not to re-enlist...He dreams of fishing in the clear streams of Montana...his home state. He thought of all the plans of his "Friends"...that is his only good memory of Iraq....He says his best memory will be the day he leaves. He says..."I think the most frustrating thing is, there's no feeling of accomplishment, you're biding your time and waiting. But then you lose friends, and it's not even for their own country's freedom", it takes away all else. Many of the marines were promoted posthumously. My brother was promoted to CPL. 1st. class...after he died in the jungle of Vietnam! I just watched Gen. Abizaid...on Meet the Press....praise the progress we are making there....where in God's name does he go? Just last week, a call- in show, put out the question,'should we pull out?'.. 95% of the people calling in....were military, Ret., or Vet. of Vietnam or Iraq...and they told stories of horror. One thought we should stay, only one!!! Unlike...Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, and Wolfowitz...who all want to conquer Iraq for Power and Oil....most sensible people see it for what it is! A totally losing situation. I watched the Pro-war march in DC...after the anti-war one. I felt almost sorry for those parents that were in so much agreement with Bush...that they could not even see the danger their kids were in....it was so sad! I support the troops....Bring them home! Shirley..............St. Louis Subject: Advisory on Congressional Progressive Caucus TV Broadcasts Free Speech TV edited the raw footage of the June 28 House Progressive Caucus event announcing the progressive legislative agenda. The finished product is about 45 minutes long, and is rather C-SPAN-like in that it was taped by a single camera. This program contains some compelling speakers and important messages. I hope you will circulate information on the forthcoming broadcasts to Representatives Woolsey and Lee, as well as the other caucus members and their staffs. ... Here are the broadcast times on Free Speech TV: All times EDT: Monday, October 3 @ 04:00 Tuesday, October 4 @ 07:00; 23:00 Wednesday, October 5 @ 02:00; 16:00 Thursday, October 6 @ 05:00; 11:00 Saturday, October 8 @ 11:00; 15:00 Sunday, October 9 @ 19:00 John B. Schwartz, Subject: Harry Reid i almost fell off my chair when i saw the head of our democratic party standing side by side with bush's new pick for the supreme court and talking about how he supports her. even before we know anything about her? even before she is confirmed or denied the position? i'd like to know just what in the hell our party is doing, bush and company is so corrupt and more proof of this every day and we have to fall on our knees and not realize what power we have now? i want a new leader and i want one now, reid has proven too weak to handle the job.
