Subject: Karl's in Charge
I don't know why it has come as such a shock to so many that Karl Rove as been put in charge of the reconstruction effort. He's Mr. Bush's top spin-doctor and the main priority of this Administration is the "reconstruction" of their poll numbers.
People need to understand that this is what conservatives think governing is about, public relations and the abuse of power. They have been telling us for going on 30 years that government is inherently inept and corrupt. Now that they are the government they think it is their job to screw up public services and funnel money to their political supporters. And since actually accomplishing anything good or real, by government means, is impossible in their minds, the only rational use of government funds is to rebuild their image.
So naturally they put Karl in charge. When it comes to style over substance, he’s the best in the business, and when you’re a conservative, maintaining appearances while betraying the public trust is the real business of government.
Well I heard the BIG speech......I learned from it that Dubya knows ONE big word ... "ENTREPENEUR" ... and that all of the blacks ... oops ... I mean minorities ... are going to be ENTREPENEURS and have their own businesses .... and their own homes by being ENTREPENEURS ... and they are going to do this? ... by working for minimum wage (or less) for companies like Halliburton ... Did I get this right?????
Also I didn't hear him say what the cost of all of this would be ... anywhere in his speech ... only that it would take a lot of "HARD WORK."
What I wonder is what it would have cost to rebuild the old levee when the New Orleans government wanted him to ... compared to rebuilding the WHOLE CITY? And he didn't say a word about an independent source looking into why all of this mess happened, did he? He just wants the "FOXES IN CHARGE OF THE HEN HOUSE" again it would seem.
Am I right about that too?????? It was a MEGA speech ... but no MEGA PHONE this time ... It all sounds good on the paper ... he was reading from ... but when he said that all Americans must work together on this ... He didn't mention a thing about the RICH paying their fair share ... at least I never heard him say that ... what I heard is that some other projects would need some cost adjustment ... WELL HERE WE GO AGAIN ... no mention of the ending of the WAR or raising the taxes of the RICH ... Yes it all sounded good on paper, didn't it??????
Subject: Roberts Likely Confirmation
Just a few observations I'd like to point out to fellow BuzzFlash readers regarding the confirmation hearings. What a load of nonsense! This man Roberts will have too much power in a lifetime appointment with very little information available about him. And what is available says he is very dangerous to the very idea of civil rights, and very clearly values limiting those rights, regarding women's reproductive rights, the disabled, voter's rights, and on down the line. This outcry by the religious wingnuts and other GOP nutjobs against "activist judges" is so absurd. By its very nature, the Supreme Court with its ability to set precedence, must be an activist court, not passive as Roberts contends. His analogy of a judge being an "umpire," just calling the balls and strikes, not pitching or batting, does not absolve the umpire from being "activist." It all depends on where he places the strike zone.
So the SC justices, like the umpire, can move the strike zone where he wants it, and I call that an active role. After listening to Orrin Hatch, I am furious that we, the public, as well as the witnesses he questioned, were talked down to as you would talk to a child. Hatch's argument, when speaking with a woman representative from Planned Parenthood: "Nobody knows for sure how Roberts would treat Roe v. Wade so how can you oppose him for what you "think" he would do" (to paraphrase) is so blatantly ridiculous, and of course the women did not get a chance to answer. I mean, since all Roberts would do for answers to direct questions about his position on R v W was to sidestep or refuse to answer, all someone CAN do is speculate on a candidate's motives, especially with someone with Robert's lack of written opinions, plus the fact the White House refuses to turn over requested documents.
After all, once Roberts is confirmed, it's too late to oppose him if and when he finally shows his true colors. Hatch is an idiot, and so is anyone that buys such nonsensical reasoning. Do these people ever think about what they are saying? Do the people that support Hatch listen to what he says? And they still support him? Of course, none of the Democrats were quick enough to bring this argument to Hatch's attention while he politely castigated the PP representative for "opposing someone for what you think he might do." I think I am going to be sick.
Subject: Some Barbara-like Rants and Thoughts
Is it just me or does all that has been going on seem like just a continuation of the Contract ON America that Newtie foisted on us? It appears that all that was not done and all the stupid heartless things that have been said are actually the right thing if this horror was your plan! This gives them the "mandate" to place troops and apparently private mercenaries in any place they deem necessary. They can evacuate entire cities in the future based on the "Corrina" precedent. "We're the government and we're here (finally) to help." Any bastions of democratic votes will be the first places to go...gotta dilute that vote after all.
I'm surprised Cheney hasn't come out and declared "Let's just get past the blame phase" and move along, nothing more to see here, NOW we're in charge. They just want to put off any investigations until they can get all THEIR people in place for the cover-up and whitewash.
Roberts will help mightily in that effort. Can we expect a totally tasteless joke in the near future with the smug, arrested-development stooge in the Whitehouse peering under things looking for that darn hurricane aid...nope, not there...hmmm, nope not there either. Cue audience laughter. Laura can say he would have helped sooner but he was at the "ranch" milking horses (Arabian?) and going over the blueprints for Trent's new house with a big porch.
May I suggest that in the future anyone asking for aid of any kind put it in the form of a little book and call it "Help My Pet Goat" ... that's the only way he'll actually read it! The plan is to just keep putting out the lying talking points so that his ignorant, self-righteous base will stay confused enough cuz FOX "news" says it's so. And Condi's boorish statement at her church visit about "God will be on time" sounds more like a Left Behind series Armageddon update than consolation.
The callousness of these people is boundless and disgusting. Truly disgusting, not the Laura "Blanche Dubois" Bush kind of disgusting. Just the fact that they are denying photos being taken of the dead makes me know that they will do ANYTHING to reduce the number of reported dead. I also am amazed that the MSM is still taking care of the hand that feeds them by being more shocked and outraged by the looting by starving people than they were and are by the Enron looting, or the Halliburton looting, or the gasoline company's looting. See, you just have to steal big, that's all.
At the risk of sounding like a "tinfoil-hatter," did anyone see the program recently on one of the Discovery science channels about how easily they can now manipulate storms like hurricanes? Create the right conditions and actually steer them? It was pretty eye-opening so I did some cursory research on the web and found that since the 70's the U.N. and notable people such as former Sen. Claiborne Pell and Defense Sec. Cohen (Clinton's?) have made statements against the use of such abilities as weapons. The U.N. only says not to use it against ANOTHER COUNTRY, nothing about using it on your own people.
I also would like to respond and add to another Buzzer's mail that did a take off on Rev. Niemöller's"First they came for" speech after the Holocaust...First they came for the union members, but I wasn't one and I didn't speak up, then they came for the teachers, journalists, liberals, Democrats, poor, dissenters, etc. We are all in the cross hairs unless we find some way to get back to true elections and get a majority of Democrats in office in 2006 and beyond.
Thanks for listening.
Subject: Katrina Costs
I see where idiot-in-chief is espousing (again) the 'shared sacrifice' thing.....
Bush's 'shared sacrifice' means: the uber-rich, such as the Bush family and the families that are 'the base,' get any glory of whatever good comes out of the rebuilding, and such as whatever good would come out of the Iraq (pre-planned, and of choice) War....
and WE, as usual...get the sacrifice of lost sons/daughters/spouses, etc...not to mention we as well as our kids, grandkids, great-grandkids..etc...get the honor of the sacrifice of fewer services, higher taxes, and paying for all of this forever.....
Shared sacrifice, indeed.
You would think he could come up with something new....

Subject: Mr. Bush in New Orleans
To the [NY Times] Editor:
The Times writes with reference to President Bush's speech in New Orleans, "...as he did after 9/11, Mr. Bush has responded to disaster with disconcerting uncertainty, then risen to the occasion later."
The obvious thread between 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina is that the president's speech writer did his job well. Perhaps if President Bush had devoted the same attention to hiring FEMA directors as he has done with people hired to put nice words in his mouth, thousands of lives could have been saved.

****AMEN**** It needed to be said, and I Thank You.
Subject: He should fire himself (sent to corporate media)
"We will do what it takes."
Why is the media so excited that GWB takes responsibility for his government's response to Katrina? This is the fool that appointed all the inexperienced heads to the various departments answerable for the miserable reaction to Katrina and its victims. The man is a menace to society ... when will the media finally admit what most Americans already know. Jon Stewart's Show tells the truth ... albeit in a comic vein ... which is more truth than we get from you folks.
Subject: Weak-kneed Democrats
I'm glad that you guys are posting links to things that are a little bit critical of Democrats now and then. You know, that's really the problem. They don't stand behind positions in such a way to gain the confidence of people. Most of them seem to be just part of the industry of politics--gutless, spineless, unctuous. I can understand why people like Republicans: yes, their position on most issues is repugnant, but they stand behind them without wavering. If the Democrats got this for even three seconds, we would see many improvements. Instead of having principled decisions, politics is an absurd pr game with the consultacracy (people like Bob Shrum who ruined Kerry's chances) calling the shots.
I think your mission at BuzzFlash would be more effective if you focused on riding herd on Democrats instead of always bashing Republicans. We already know they're criminals. We already know they're bad. No new headline that I ever see about how bad they are is very compelling anymore. They're going to just keep on doing what they're doing. You could, however have some influence on Democrat politicians. Start cracking that whip!

Ignore the NYT. Dowd and Herbert are the only ones worth reading anyway, and let THEM deal with being ignored.

Subject: The real reason NOLA was allowed to flood
New Orleans Sludge Is Full of Bacteria (ABC News)
In the broadcast of the story linked above, the reporter stated that the sludge left behind was impossible to clean up. He further stated that the land shouldn't be re-built on and that the nearby refineries should be allowed to expand... I couldn't find a link to the full clip.
It goes to the theory that NOLA was "allowed" to be destroyed for monetary gain.
Subject: Bush Lied About Charity
President Bush told us last night that a portion of the $100 million collected by Clinton and Bush thus far would go to houses of worship to reimburse them for emergency work they have done. Earlier he told us the money would go to the governors of the states affected.
Is this not fraud?
The public that gave the $100 million had no opportunity to investigate the churches that will be receiving these funds. I had an experience myself researching a charity years ago that solicited money from my mother. It turned out that a very small percentage of funds supported those in need. The money went to a “ministry” that paid $500,000 salary each to the minister and his wife.
I applaud the churches that stepped forward to feed the hungry. I assumed however that the very definition of charity implies “out of my own pocket.” Now we discover that the funds collected will be another example of “no bid contracts” going to the president’s political supporters.
Charity money does not belong to George W. Bush to dole out as he sees fit.
Subject: Bush's body and face language
If you have the DVD,' Uncovered, the war on Iraq'.....check out the place where Bush tells the US that he is "issuing a general terrorist alert"... this had to be before the 2004 election...they have not had one since then. He tells us, "we do this when the defense department tells us....It is not the first time..." and with the most phoney sad, depressed, distressed look that he can conjur up..."I hope it is the last"! This is a study in the phoniness of George Bush. It is the most emotionally acted thing I have ever seen out of him. He almost cries at that last ignorant remark! Check it out!
Subject: Bush Needs A Break
According to today's press briefing with Scottie, Bush is headed to Camp David for the weekend.
He's been working too hard, I guess. Now that he has had his time in front of the cameras in Jackson Square with his sleeves rolled up and has made his little speech at the National Cathedral where he commended the "Americans saw the hungry and gave them something to eat; saw the thirsty and gave them something to drink; saw strangers and invited them in" he can take a little time for relaxation. He hasn't been able to relax much since the day after Katrina hit when he realized that New Orleans had dodged the bullet. Maybe he will have time to have a little celebratory cake to eat.
Subject: Laura Bush: Hypocrite Of The Week
In line with your thoughts naming Laura Bush hypocrite of the week... What is also "disgusting"?
During the 2004 presidential election campaign our gentle first lady, parroting Rove's script, protecting the president from his pathetic and inhuman position on Stem Cell research, does disgusting pretty well herself.
Contrary to Mrs. Bush's claims, her husband was not "the first president to fund stem cell research" (Clinton was). Instead he (Bush) was bringing the NIH funding to a screeching halt. I would also like the first lady to know that my teenage daughter-- who was diagnosed with type I diabetes at age seven -- does not consider this research a "false hope," regardless of the outcome. Quite the contrary it's one of the few things that keeps her hopeful about the future. And I'll tell you, hope is quite hard to come by in her life.
This charade of “sweet little Laura” is getting old. I think she’s been getting compassion lessons from Babs.
Subject: Reason Bush did not respond
I take a little bit of a different tact as to why our idiot president tried to ignore Katrina. I think the big reason Bush ignored it (perhaps had nothing to do with color)....he heard about it and tried to ignore it because the first thing that came to his mind.....was...THIS IS BIG! Hundreds of thousands are going to be affected.......it is gonna cost millions...billions. And, the first thing that came to him was.....Iraq....rich tax cuts.....and that we did not have one penny extra in case Mother Nature came calling. This was God throwing a rock at George Bush's head...to wake the idiot up! You can never plan on an act of Nature....Hurricanes....earthquakes....tornadoes...etc. We chose this war....regardless of what this man says.....in one speech..."We will respond, we did not choose it, but we will fight it!" Right there is one of the biggest lies in all of American history. How in God's name can we go on with this man? If anyone thinks back....to when it first happened...and he was discussing it....he said, at least twice..."We do not want not to have enough resources to respond to WMD."...This is really the first thing he thought about.....HIS WAR!!!
Subject: American Renaissance
The Dem's we have, in large part, suck. BUT unfortunately, we have to hope that some of them can lead us in a better direction. SO, since everyone who has an opinion on the other side of the aisle, is always claiming that we are the party of NO, and saying that democrats have no positive ideas, let us become something else. Let us in this upcoming election year proclaim the Democratic Party to be the party of the new American Renaissance.
It's pretty isn't it? AND best of all it implies that we are emerging from a dark age, which we WILL be if we can get someone with real vision for our future in the white house, but also in every seat of government in every state available. This is an ALL OF US idea. This idea.....these two words alone almost immediately bring a sense of joy, hope and relief to one's heart, do they not?
Does the very idea of an AMERICAN Renaissance not somehow make you giddy with the thought that we can turn this around, and get back to being not just the country we were before 2001, but an even BETTER country where justice is a given, the less fortunate are cared for, and the rule of law is what we swear our allegiance to?
This pissant president has stressed out the entire planet so much in the past 5 years, that for US to come out with a platform of hope and renewal, under the banner of an American Renaissance.........geez it just seems like a great way to finally shake this image foisted on us as being the "party of no." We will become the party of NOW. The party of ALL Americans who want a better future.
Let the American Renaissance begin, and let's allow ourselves some joy. We are so much better than this, and the whole world knows it. Any Democratic person considering a run for any office.........let's use this beautiful term, and all it implies to take back our beautiful country's former grace.
Tell everyone that America is coming home, and better than ever before. Committed to truth and justice, humility among nations, and the true strength which comes from living by these things. We could end the war on terror. We can truly lead the world to peace. It's the American Renaissance, and it's getting closer every day.............one relieved heart and mind at a time. Believe it.
Subject: Bush's Guarantee to Us
Here's Bush's approach to disaster management:
(1) Bush ignores the warnings: Bush was warned over and over, by experts, regarding the probability of a terrorist attack here in America, such as 9/11, and he was warned about the dangerous instability of the New Orleans levees -- but he did nothing in either case to prevent the disaster;
(2) Then, Bush goes missing for a period of time: During 9/11, when there were still three hijacked airliners in the air Bush sat frozen, with a blank stare on his face, for seven precious minutes. After Katrina, Bush went missing for five days before some staffer worked up the courage to tell Bush he had better do something or the rabble would come after him with their picks and scythes;
(3) Bush responds feebly and ineffectively to the disaster, after which his poll numbers drop;
(4) Karl Rove swings into action;
(5) Bush urges legislation taking away our civil rights and increasing the ability of the army to take over "unstable" situations here in America, which the army has historically been forbidden to do. But since Bush has "proven" -- with his tardy response to the Katrina disaster -- that there is too much chaos if he "lets" local and state officials try to deal with the problem, and since the National Guard is in Iraq instead of being available to do the emergency work here at home, which they are so uniquely qualified and trained to do, Bush "needs" to pull in the military;
(6) Bush sets stage for: martial law in times of natural disasters, a reduction of our civil liberties, and unstoppable spending by government contractors with close ties to Bush;
(7) Bush uses the disaster to demand more tax cuts for the super-rich and to destroy any program that helps the middle class and poor, such as: Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, heating and housing assistance for the poor, student loans, minimum wage protections, worker safety protections, protections against all forms of discrimination, job security protections, pension protections, bankruptcy protections and support for our public schools;
(8) Bush also uses disasters to push legislation eliminating protections for our air quality, our drinking water, our National Parks, all aspects of our environment, and he eliminates regulations to protect us from UNsafe drugs, UNsafe products, and UNethical stock managers;
(9) Bush sees how "well" 9/11 has worked for him in achieving his goal of expanding his unfettered power, and how well it now seems to be going for him in transferring our tax dollars into the pockets of his cronies to "rebuild" New Orleans.
So we can be sure there will be more disasters on Bush's watch.
