Arriving deputy [Timothy E.] Flanigan, who also worked in counsel's office, may have similar problem, while third-in-command [Associate Attorney General Robert D.] McCallum [Jr.] is Yale friend of Bush. Comey plans to give the responsibility to career Justice attorney, though the only control Fitzgerald's Justice handler has is to fire him."

Subject: G-save; The New Marketing Tool!
Changing the title from “War on Terror” to “Global Struggle Against Violent Extremism” is soooo transparent. One blogger on another web-site called it G-Save! As we all can guess it's a title supposed to save Bush/Blair Butts from being blamed as the cause of rising terrorism by their invasion of Iraq and nation-building policies! As usual the news networks, in their appointed roles of Pioneers or Rangers, are promoting a play by play 24 hour a day report from London, AD NAUSEAM! Do we really care to hear every witness report of the arrests or every little facet they can dig up? Wouldn’t a brief report each hour serve to inform the public? We need to email them once again! There are close to 1800 soldiers dead and more than one London Bomber is on the loose in Iraq. How about not avoiding reports on Iraq? Does this go against G-SAVE?

In his campaign Bush said he would not be interested in “nation building,” but the Neocons, power and his ego overrode that idea. George Bush can call his war any name he wants, but all evidence points to the same result, it is a never-ending quagmire! You can’t overrun a people with your ideas on how they should be governed. How can you claim non-interference and send your Secretary of Defense ten or more times over to Iraq, plus all the other visits from your government officials, all pressuring the new government to do it your way. Woodrow Wilson had the correct idea, “You cannot tear-up ancient rootages and safely plant the tree of liberty in soil that is not native to it!!” I’ll add, especially by invading a nation under false pretenses, destroying the cities, killing their people, torture and abuse, and by out and out coercion of a new government!

Many current playwrights are exposing the flaws in our society in their works, I among them. Here's a thumbnail synopsis of one of my four newest works: "A terrorist attack on the most powerful nation on earth frightens its citizens into turning their affairs over to a demagogue, who proceeds to lay waste to them and their institutions." Time: 415 BC. Place: Athens. And the Hero was the first man on record to suggest that an accused person should be considered innocent until proven otherwise.
P.S. I forgot to mention the name of the play whose synopsis I supplied. It's "The Mutilators" - referring to the terrorist act that sets the play's action in motion, and the subsequent damage done to Athens' institutions by the demagogues. The last line of the play, spoken by the young veteran of Athens' war, is: "Dear God - when we began to fight the Spartans, they were no better than they are now. But we were."

Can't we start another country or something? Ya know, one that is actually loyal to the founding fathers' ideals? Make it like the USA we used to have. Ya know the OLD USA? Before it became that bastard Bush's play thing. Do we really HAVE to remain part of this sick nation led by criminals? Can't we at least talk about secession? How about shouting it from the rooftops? Isn't this what Jefferson was talking about in the Preamble? Why not us? We've got more power than we might think.
Just musing. We have to do something. The sick greedy bastards in control are killing us. What about a massive month long (year long?) march on Washington? Siege? Can we ~still~ let the South go? No offense to people in the south, but if they take that half, we can have the North, and form a government which is civilized, and decidedly NOT reptilian. Something? Anything? The answer to our problems surely is not to do nothing. Who are we anyway?

Subject: Progressives from Mars, Conservatives from Venus
We seem to be stuck in the United States. Progressives say that our agenda supports equality and fairness. Conservatives insist that their policies support the vision of the founding fathers.
When Thomas Jefferson and the other revolutionaries rebelled, they were in the “lower” levels of the British hierarchy. Since they were being controlled and exploited, this particular hierarchy was painfully visible to them. Hierarchies are easiest to see from "lower" levels, so the lack of equality and fairness was obvious to these men when the British were in control.
But, Thomas Jefferson left his home — managed by his wife, who had fewer legal and social rights than her husband — to go to the Second Continental Congress and write the Declaration of Independence, which declared, “All Men Are Created Equal,” and that “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness” were unalienable Rights. He took his horse — cared for by his slaves — and rode across land that had been forcefully taken from indigenous people.
When forming our country, the founders of the United States moved into the top levels of the hierarchies they were creating. Hierarchies are difficult to see from the top. Why else would they draft a Constitution with laws that favored only people just like themselves, and find ways to rationalize those laws as equal and fair, while keeping the benefits flowing their way? To them, voting rights for four percent of the adult population meant life in the new United States was fair.
Which legacy of the Founding Fathers will ultimately define the United States?
Are we going to listen to the people in "lower" levels of hierarchies whose experiences tell them that hierarchies do not produce life, liberty, and happiness for all? Or, are we going to follow the perspectives of those residing on top of our hierarchies who insist that their lives are proof that hierarchies can, in fact, produce opportunity for liberty, equality and justice for all?
That is the question that divides our country.

Since Dr. Frist has made clear that he is willing to give diagnoses based on videotape outside of his specialty, I figure that he'd be willing to practice veterinary medicine as well. Do you think I should send him a video of my dog?"
I'd suggest that you hang a rosary or tie a St Jude medal around the neck of your beloved pet to make certain that Frist knows your wonderful dog is Christian. That, and a red balloon floating in the video would seem to ensure that the good senator/doctor might pay you some attention.

Subject: Subject: CAFTA Vote from the July 29 Mailbag
I had already signed the letter drafted by the AFL-CIO when I read the letter in the mailbag re: the CAFTA vote. In that letter, the list of crossover Democrats (or sell outs as I call them) was included in that letter. I then found a site - which unfortunately I cannot locate at this time, which also displayed other recent votes (expanding the USA PATRIOT Act, the bankruptcy bill) which showed those same names. Surprise, surprise!!! The name of Melissa Bean (D-Illinois 8th) appeared in the column with the Republicans nearly every time. You name it, she was there.
I campaigned for Melissa Bean in the last election campaign as she ran for the seat held for so long by Philip Crane. I heard her speak saying she was going to make a difference. She just didn't say what kind of difference she had in mind. I think what she meant was she would be a Democrat in Republican clothing. But we believed she meant something else. I have let her know that I have been watching her voting record. And that I intend to work to unseat her in the next election.
Frankly, I'd rather have a Republican that we can trust to do the Republicans' bidding than to have Melissa Bean "represent" the Democrats of the 8th district by voting Republican. As an old Vietnam era vet RN I am so sick of the Right Wing limp dick tirade calls to war. I am 53 years old. I hereby will start to re-enlist to help those National Guard Members go home in one piece. The AP reports the praysident will be at Crawford during August, for the 50th time since he's been in office. One reason for this, quite seemingly, is that this sad excuse for a human needs space to sniff, snort, and guzzle without having to worry about anyone catching him. It would not be unusual, also, to find him milking a stud horse as his wife has mentioned. Look for another bike accident, too, usually right after he's ingested some Colombian Gold. Aaaachoooo!

Subject: Re "The Manchurian Candidate" by Joel Peskoff, July 29, 2005
I enjoyed reading Mr. Peskoff's contribution so much I almost forgot the treasonous activities that made it necessary and so timely. Then I reverted to "... pissed-off to the spring-loaded position" about the partisan destruction of OUR once-great Country, OUR Constitution, and OUR Bill of Rights since January 21, 2001.
My opinion remains that it isn't the shrub (not a full bush) who is leading this destruction, it's PNAC (http://www.newamericancentury.org) and their enablers, almost ALL of whom are members of this regime in Washington, who planned this entire sad, destructive episode of our Nation's History.
Yes, we can read it in their own words; they planned this destruction since before June 3, 1997, as we can see at ...
... destruction of this Country with their blind drive toward regime change in Iraq. So, some questions for all y'all's:
1) How can we change the perception of media, the Democrat "leadership," and the public, that lies after 9/11 were the drivers to our folly in Iraq? It was certainly planned as early as 1997 (see above), perhaps before the first "Gulf War" under the shrub's poppy's regime, and is probably part of the republican response to their never-ending belief that Nixon was great and we drove him out of office "over some third-rate burglary." I base this last opinion partly on the number of former Nixon and Reagan and Ford regime hangers-on who slid back into the present regime with little fanfare.
2) How can we change the perception of media, the Democrat "leadership," and the public that the shrub is really the President? Again, if we look deeply at the roots and progression of PNAC and the present regime, the only conclusion we can reach: PNAC and their enablers had their plan, and only needed another figurehead, following the model of the Reagan administration (and try to tell me he wasn't the worst president we've had, by far.
What they searched for: 1) money to run the campaign 2) links to more power 3) media savvy 'publicans, perhaps media owners? 4) someone who already had a (terribly false) image of a "good guy" republican.
What their search found: 1) the "vast right-wing conspiracy" that truly exists here, though to be a true conspiracy it should be hidden, and this is not 2) didn't have to look too far: this was already part of PNAC (see their website for the names of their powerful members ...) 3) scaife, viguerie, murdoch, rove, et al. 4) the shrub!
It fits! His bro' Jeb and the rest of the PNAC'ers with connections to all recent republican administrations knew he'd play the role well. They knew his "brain," rove, knew how to manipulate him and the media and public opinion so well, and they knew he'd just follow along, as he has followed his poppy since the early days. Yup, jes' a good ol' boy", my dupa!
What we have now: a Country whose general population has not been taught any critical thinking skills, a regime that plays us like 280 million puppets, and Democratic leadership that seems to have lost the fight needed to resist these people, and win the "war" even if an individual issue is lost.
So the shrub may be a double-agent? Someone or something is a double-agent there, but I don't think it's the shrub. He's just one of the fortunates whose brain was taken over by the same people who are taking over this Country without firing a shot. Could that be why we never see UFO's any more, because they've taken over so many republicans' brains ...? (Just kidding ... we still need some humor!) But hey! Maybe the folks from all the UFO's we used to see (you saw them, too, didn't you?) knew most republicans didn't do much critical thinking, knew, in fact, that many don't think at all, they just sit around and conspire. It's all they know how to do. What's best for the Country never enters their ... brains ...
Thanks for the opportunity to rant ... but I sure hope it's a little more than a rant. In fact it's not satisfying enough to just rant all the time ... I just might get involved in ... what a thought: local, grass-roots POLITICS! Why not you? Perhaps you can lead the black suburbans and black helicopters over your way, and take their attention away from me!

This story has been kicking around the internet for at least a week now ... pictures have been submitted that proved that he had nothing on like the story implies. The Guardian has investigated it ... there is even strangeness in the bombing in London. Much of it may not be true ... but this sure isn't.
Subject: Radical Conservative Judicial Activists
For decades, radical right-wing ideologues have used the sound bites "judicial activist" and "radicals from the bench" to describe any legal scholar who they consider to be "liberal." Uniformly and in accordance with their talking points, conservatives define a "judicial activist" as someone who "legislates from the bench" or "a person who makes law instead of interpreting it." Then, conservatives claim to be the opposite and describe themselves as "originalists" or "strict constructionists" or "Constitutionalists." Like white on rice, conservatives are lying.
Indeed, there may be a time where it is indeed appropriate to strike down a law if it is unconstitutional. (Especially when a denial of rights is involved.) But in the first 65 years of American history, only twice did the Supreme Court strike down an act of Congress. Anthony Scalia and Clarence Thomas vote to strike down an act of Congress or a law of a state almost 2 out of every 3 times they hear a case about the constitutionality of a law. That percentage, (65%) is the highest of any two judges in American history.
What kind of laws do Conservative justices seek to strike down? One only has to look at a slew of recent cases in which conservative radicals have sought to legislate from the bench and strike down the Violence Against Women's Act, The Americans with Disabilities Act, certain economic regulations, environmental protections, Family and Medical Leave, etc. ... To me, these are issues of the legislature. If a person wants to change these laws, they should do so through Congress. If my way wins, great. If the Far Right gets their way on these acts, then their way becomes the law of the land. But for any judge to strike down these laws as unconstitutional is a judge who is lying, a judge who is betraying his oath of office and legislating from the bench.
Conservatives then claim that "if it isn't in the Constitution" in its "plain meaning" then you don't have that right. There are several flaws to this red herring. First, the Founders made it clear that when there was a doubt as to whether or not a right existed, then "the enumeration in the Constitution of certain rights shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people." (9th Amendment of US Constitution.) So whether you believe in a living breathing document or strict constructionism, the Robert Bork, Anthony Scalia interpretation of the Constitution contradicts the Constitution itself.
Second, conservatives play a word game with the words "plain meaning." For example, Article 1 Section 8 of the Constitution says that Congress may "provide for the common defence and general welfare of the United States." The article also states that Congress may "regulate commerce with foreign nations and among the several states." Thus, these issues are legislative issues. But when Scalia comes across an economic regulation he doesn't like, Scalia strikes it down claiming it to be unconstitutional. Scalia's convoluted arguments goes something like this: (The words family and medical leave don't appear in the Constitution so the right doesn't exist.) But these powers are broad and legislative in nature and if the founders were forced to write down every conceivable scenario for times that change centuries later, there would be no trees today.
Third, when the plain meaning is so plain such as "Congress shall make no law respecting the establishment of religion," Scalia and company just ignore it. Whether an originalist or a non-originalist, no good faith judge can justify imposing religion on people with govt. tax dollars.
In the end, the kind of judges that Bush is putting on the court are those with an agenda; judges who will do everything that the conservative talking points say liberal judges do. We can't allow a Scalia clone like John Roberts to serve on the Supreme Court.

Subject: Fine, Upstanding Roberts, Part of the Problem
So this fine, upstanding Catholic Roberts, nominee to the SCOTUS, was associate counsel to reagan during Iran/Contra! That should scare the Beelzebub out of any thinking person on this Planet. (Hey, I used to be a Catholic, too, so I can say that!)
Yup, Iran/Contra, when the reagan regime, with many of its anti-United States Constitution members now in the shrub’s regime, made the second republican attack on our Country, from within, in the 1900’s. Their attempt was thwarted then, and it must be thwarted now. All the work these treasonous sob’s have done since Nixon resigned and their empire crumbled is coming to fruition. If we do not stop them, it’s because we don’t care enough about OUR Country, OUR Constitution, OUR Bill of Rights, and the Rule of Law.
So, I need to step back and remember, remember when richard milhaus nixon “ran” this country ... And I clearly remember the days of protest and the days of Government crime against American Citizens practicing their protected “Free Speech,“ and truly believed that Nixon wanted to let things get bad enough that he’d have to declare martial law ... Yup, that dick did himself in …. oh, what? A pardon before trial? Why?
Then the reagan boys, some of the same nixon actors again, did not uphold the United States Constitution as they swore they would do. And Congressional Immunity got most off the hook ... like the “more-patriotic-than-thou” ollie south ... What a piece of work he is … ranting and raving about everyone else working to better this Country, spewing bravo-sierra based on his twisted and skewed view of Democracy.
So what’s the score since 1960? Let's see:
John F. Kennedy, a Democrat, assassinated
Lyndon B. Johnson, Democrat, eye trouble (couldn’t see a clear path through a quagmire to another term)
R. M. Nixon, a republican, self-driven from office by crime
Gerald R. Ford, a republican, apparently given two responsibilities: pardon the criminal and don’t screw up
Jimmy Carter, a Democrat and man of the highest integrity, driven from office by management style coupled with subterfuge in and out of this Country by his opponents FROM this Country
Ronald Reagan, a republican, first of the modern-day puppets, a second-rate movie boy, and maybe a draft-dodger in WWII? His handlers ran the most corrupt administration of our times, but they knew how to handle the media and the gullible citizens of this Country much better than the amateurs in the Nixon days. History will remember that regime for its crimes
George H. W. Poppy Bush, another republican ... and another regime working on a series of subterfuges and self-enrichment schemes that never came to fruition because of
William J. Clinton, a Democrat who was able to perform admirably while his (and our Country’s) enemies spent hundreds of millions of dollars (mostly our tax money) and ten years in an utterly failed project to destroy him and his wife personally. Again, as in the Nixon and reagan and bush years, these enemies had their own interests, not the Country’s, at heart

So we've had 4 Democrats: Kennedy, Johnson, Carter and Clinton. Hmmmmm. Common thread here? Aha, I knew you’d catch on: upholding and defending OUR Constitution, OUR Bill of Rights, and working to help OUR citizens who needed help
And we’ve had 5 republican administrations since the ‘60’s, nixon, ford, reagan, bush and bush; what’s the common thread here: total disregard for our Country and its citizens.
So we have a roberts on the road to SCOTUS, and this roberts is an integral part of the friggin' republican problem in this Country (and since the PNAC took over, the biggest problem in the entire WORLD!). How I wish the Democrats would fight, and how I wish the true Republicans (yes, capital R)would stand up and say "Enough of this Crime in OUR names! Out with you, beelzebub!" Suffrin' succotash, Sam! Following a story from your daily alerts, I found this today:
"Questions about Bolton surfaced anew on Thursday when the State Department reversed itself and acknowledged that Bolton had given Congress inaccurate information ..." Really? The questions were new? That Bolton might be a liar? Nah, that's not new.
"At first, the State Department had insisted Bolton's answer was truthful." Am I the only one who thinks it's outrageous that the State Dept. was not aware of this? Why do we trust them with passports? Perhaps we need to give them more money so they can have the 'find' feature under 'Edit' that all other Windows users have? Or, do they need more staff to input the data?
"But it later acknowledged that Bolton had failed to tell lawmakers that he had been interviewed ..." Guess they finally found the time to do a manual search on each and every form that has ever been submitted to them?
"When Mr. Bolton completed his form during the Senate confirmation process he did not recall being interviewed by the State Department inspector general. Therefore his form as submitted was inaccurate in this regard and he will correct the form," said State Department spokesman Sean McCormack." Gads, someone please help them file it!
"McClellan said the White House was not concerned by the episode." Well, of course it wasn't, because their definition of concern does not resemble most of America's commonly-held definition. Lying is SOP for the house's occupants.
Kinda scary, isn't it, though, that someone who's in consideration for our head diplomat to the UN "can't recall" rather important information like that? On second thought, since he doesn't seem to feel the desire or need to respond to other countries, I guess we shouldn't care if he can't remember stuff. He plans to revamp the whole UN anyway, right? The past will just get in the way.
I wonder what the rest of the world is thinking of us? I don't think much of many of us and I love us!!!

Subject: Military classes are off course (Danny Westneat/Seattle Times)
BuzzFlash posted Danny Westneat's article, "Military Classes Are Off-Course" (Seattle Times 7.29.05) while I was writing to both the Seattle Times and Mr. Westneat about his article. Mr. Westneat has expressed his support of military recruiters in Seattle schools in previous opinion articles. While he poses some objections about the military actually teaching courses in public schools he is very supportive to their presence.
While I do not expect Mr. Westneat to accept my dissenting and diverse view any more than I expect the Seattle Times to publish my letter, I would like to open the topic to a broader readership available through BuzzFlash. Here is my letter to Mr. Westneat:
Subject: I don't even know where to begin
I am completely overwhelmed by this weekend's news. I am angered by the ongoing corruption and mystified that there is no movement to stop it. I know I am not alone, but I feel helpless in the face of this Bush/Neocon onslaught. Everywhere I turn, I see - or hear - or read - the damage being done to this once-great nation of ours. CAFTA is passed (Caving On CAFTA July 28, 2005 ) with the vote of among others, Rep. Melissa Bean (D-IL 8th) a person who ran on the Democratic ticket and has done nothing but vote republican since her election. Nothing, and no one challenges anything this group of (very wealthy and very dishonest) thugs wants or pushes. (Billmon: Brazen venality in CAFTA vote 7/31). Nancy Pelosi is being called "crazy" (Pelosi questions Republican ethics in CAFTA win... ) as she challenges the legality of the deals made in order to get this "treaty'' that benefits the richest and again will further widen the gaping chasm between the rich and the poor - only this time it will be our neighbors to the south of us.
The energy "reform" bill (A Drop in the Bucket, July 28, 2005) has helped no one but the very industries we all thought it was meant to monitor (oil, mining, off shore drilling). I was listening to The Laura Flanders Show on AirAmericaRadio as she was interviewing USPIRG Washington legislative director Anna Aurilio. Ms Aurilio was present during the 2:30 a.m. lobbying and reported that a huge applause went up as the energy lobby "had their way." She said it was outrageous. And I can tell you it made me ill to hear her recall it.
I watched David Gregory on MSNBC interview Jean Schmidt the GOP candidate running to represent Cincinnati openly lie with seemingly no conscience (GOP candidate in Ohio says we invaded Iraq because Saddam told us there were WMD. 7/31). I was screaming at the tv from another room. How do they do it? They lie, and lie, and lie, and no one calls them on it openly. The Democrats mince words, call it "untruths" or "dissembling" - or as our learned leader says "disassembling" (I'd love to dis- and then re -assemble him). The Republicans are nasty, scurrilous, vindictive and as low as they come. But they say that the Democrats "lie" or divide the country, and accuse our best senators of comparing the Republicans to the "Nazis" while they are the very ones doing so. They project - attribute that which they themselves are guilty of onto others as they twist words and challenge and mislead ("Clear Skies," "Healthy Forests," Medicare "Reform," "energy bill." To read the headlines of USA Today, you'ld have thought the energy companies were the losers in the bill.) Talk about cognitive dissonance.
They leak the name of a CIA operative causing irreparable damage to our intelligence and anti-terrorism programs and then lie - all because they are angry about being "outed" themselves for knowingly using false statements (lies) in the SOTU. This in order to scare the US into giving permission to wage war against a sovereign nation that was no threat to anyone. Rove and Libby and anyone else involved will not be charged for this treasonous act. Nor will the GOP-er who impersonated a Secret Service agent in Colorado (No Charges against Alleged Secret Service Imposter). But they locked up protestors at the Republican National Convention in NY (Sept. 2004) for following the directions given by the police, and held some of them for days. But then we were Democrats and Independents and we have no rights/voice in this country.
We have a rightwing nut who is bellicose and dangerous who will be appointed to the UN in the next few days (Bolton's Abscess Appointment, July 29, 2005). He could be the most dangerous of all the appointees yet. And the stories that we have read and heard ought to make us extremely nervous. But just like the others, he is rewarded for his bad behavior. The decent and honest get fired or smeared - or both. I suppose Bolton will be the next Medal of Freedom winner after he gets us into war with Iran or Syria. Even murder or rape gets you promoted if you are at the top with these criminals. It is truly a crime family. And now, we have a judge with only 2 years judicial experience, being nominated for SCOTUS. His writings, memos, directives, briefs, thoughts and beliefs are not going to be shared with anyone. He was instrumental in getting Bushco appointed in 2000 (Roberts Had Larger 2000 Recount Role), he has written briefs that are pro-big business, anti-choice, anti-health, anti-environment. And anything that has been written by this "good-looking, well-mannered man" is said to be off limits to scrutiny. HOW DO THEY GET AWAY WITH THIS???
I am more than a little concerned about our world. This is not what I want to give my children. This is not what I want for my elderly parents. This is not what I deserve. Nor do you. I don't care about history books. I care about now. And tomorrow. And it doesn't look good to me.
