Subject: those missing records

So glad they managed to "find" the missing Bush pay records. I was going to suggest they look in Cheney's socks! Every time someone cries about Sandy Berger, we ought to scream about Bush's own missing records.

Subject: We Want Teresa Heinz Kerry to Debate Stepford Wife Laura Bush. Please! 7/27

We want the candidates' KIDS to have a debate or around the table discussion about what it means to be in THEIR generation and voting for a candidate that is interested in their future and NOT in the father's past made present. This is an important aspect of the campaign as we can see first-hand what "family values" have done for the kids. We'll see then who is the best prepared to represent themselves and others of their age group.

Subject: convention & msn

I thought it quite a coincidence that the msn main page would have the headline "Kerry losing ground to Bush" on the day after the opening of the democratic convention. It goes on to say that 4 in 10 think Kerry is too liberal!

No wonder we have a nation of mindless idiots who think the world is just peachy. Is the killing of innocent people based on a pack of lies too conservative or does our nation tolerate this out of fear of national health care and "liberalism."

We need to wake up the schmucks somehow, some way.

Subject: Note to Tom Brokaw

Hi BuzzFlash,

This was the best piece I'd ever read on the subject, honest and true. Ms. Lopez puts them in their place and yet leaves the door open for them to get off their knees, be what American journalism once aspired to be. I'm sending it to all of them.

Subject: on the Big Dog's speech...

BuzzFlash-

Like your articles today summarize, the 'Big Dog' Bill C. was da bomb! He gave a great speech and really knew his stuff. He makes Bush look like a complete fool who'd collapse without the support of Dicky and the rest of the neocons surrounding him. Compare that speech for example to GW Bush's one-on-one interview with ITE's Irish journalist Carol Coleman at the White House! God, what an idiot Bush came off as in that one.

Subject: Re: Teresa's 12 Minutes of Fame

Just an FYI in this area, the Scaife-owned Tribune-Review's star reporter, who led the anti-Clinton crusade, was the architect of the Vince Foster and Ron Brown murder theories, and then wrote his own book, The Very Strange Death of Vince Foster, is Christopher Ruddy, who now runs ....NewsMax! Where NewsMax's funding comes from is anyone's guess. Ahem.

Subject: RE: Carl Cameron

I wonder if you have seen the clip of Carl Cameron with Bush from the satellite feed in 2000.

http://www.moveon.org/r?539

How can this guy continue to be a political reporter when this smoking gun clearly shows his true colors? It is especially bad that he is allowed to cover Bush's opponent. He in my opinion does everything to highlight the negative in his Kerry coverage. I suggest that any serious media critic has an obligation to view this clip and comment on it more fully than a brief he said-she said, few sentences.

thank you,

somerdale, nj

PS -- I wonder why the media has their panties in a bunch over Teresa Heinz-Kerry's "shove it" comment. The reporter in question was from a Richard Melon-Scaife right wing rag that I hear even pushed the Vince Foster murder conspiracy theory. It's not like she told him to F**k off. How bad could her comment be if it isn't even deemed worthy of a bleep on tv.

Subject: The Dems

Buzz,

The Democrats are running a cowardly campaign, cowed by the Republicans into not "Bush-bashing," (i.e. criticizing Bush in any way for anything).

Even David Letterman commented on this last night on his show, that they aren't showing the "guts" to say anything, to take a stand, due to fear of "alienating" or "offending" people out there in the Heartland of the Homeland.

They are running against the worst President and most incompetent and mendacious administration in US history with the most abysmal record, and yet the Dems won't tell the truth, because they might alienate some folks.

Bush deserves to lose, but unless the Dems kick it up some notches, they won't deserve to win.

Thanks.

Subject: "Free speech" in Boston: Eyewitness report from the FSZ

Forwarded from a friend whose pal paid a visit to the designated "Free Speech Zone" near the convention last night. If this is what our civil liberties look like in a "secure" post-9/11 America, may I suggest the terrorists have already won ?

Last night, I had my first direct experience with the so-called free speech zone. It left me with one conclusion: whatever you do, do NOT go inside. It's not only a blatant offense to free speech, but also highly dangerous and unsafe. I would suggest protesting anywhere in Boston but inside of it.

No amount of hyperbole can accurately describe how disastrous the interior actually is. It's like a scene from some post-apocalyptic movie -- a futuristic, industrial detention area from a Mad Max film. You are surrounded on all sides by concrete blocks and steel fencing, with razor wire lining the perimeter. Then, there is a giant black net over the entire space.

[Pictures of the Boston "Free Speech Zone"]

That's not even the worst part. 80% of the space is actually beneath a construction site. You heard me, most of the zone is actually under a partially constructed building, broken up by gates, iron girders and wooden rafters, in the darkness.

No helicopter will ever be able to see an aerial shot of the people assembled, negating the major points of mass protest: to let the rest of the public see your numbers. This forced 'invisibility' is so painfully obvious, that it is hard to believe it resulted from pure negligence. What's more, the space fits only 1000 maximum by law, so the 1001st person who wants to express their rights, is shit out of luck.

That's not all. If you go inside, you won't be left safely alone with your fellow protesters. Right above you will be a suspended catwalk of wooden rafters traveling down the middle of the protest area. This strip is not only covered with reams of barbed wire, but officers (or national guardsmen) will be strolling above you just feet from your head. After walking in, it took us about 2 seconds to agree; "there is no fucking way we are stepping into this trap."

And if you think that the civility of individual officers will make up for it, think again. As we were casually walking through the pen, our jaws open in disbelief, a group of officers quickly surrounded us. Twenty-four of them. The first officer (Officer 'Gately') approached us swiftly, and declared, "Do you know that the willful destruction of public property in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is a felony that carries 5 year in jail!' We were taken aback by this introduction. Other people in suits and ties were walking by, using the zone as a pedestrian shortcut. A bunch of peaceniks were walking through in our shorts and backpacks and we were immediately suspect of committing a criminal act. I guess this explains the meaning of the rule about those wearing 'inappropriate clothing' being searched. The overtly intimidating tone of the interaction didn't cease, so we soon left.

I called the BPD headquarters and asked to talk to the district 2 duty officer, in order to file a complaint about the rude treatment. When I asked him (Sgt. Ross) for Officer Gately's ID#, he stated that he could not give me that information because after all, I could be "a member of the press, or an anarchist." I guess myself (along with the press and anarchists) are no longer allowed to hold the police accountable for their actions.

A word of advice: Do not make the mistake of making your first visit to the free speech zone on your day of protest. It will be too late to realize what you are getting into.

It's crazy to think that this is happening in Boston, a city that fronts a reputation of being a cradle of constitutional values. The city has tried to force free speech into a cage where it cannot survive. The only reasonable response is to exercise our rights everywhere but the protest zone.

By giving free speech an unacceptable location, the City of Boston has unwittingly declared that the entire city is now a free speech zone.

J.M.

[BuzzFlash Note: It will be interesting to see how the Republicans respond to it, as we're sure they are planning the same (or worse) for Republican Convention protestors.]

Subject: Fecal rights?

So Dubya said "feces" instead of "fetus" a dozen times at a Tampa, Fla right-to-life convention before he noticed his mistake.

Granted every Bush from Dubya's family, not only began as feces, but have grown in the role into first class stool samples. My mom really thought that was funny. We all got a real good laugh, but there were questions.

Will feces be allowed to marry each other, if they aren't gay? If you use imodium to stop un-wanted feces will it be abortion?

Subject: My answer to a question that is never asked

I cannot even guess how many times I have heard the Republican robots state that John Kerry voted against the $87-billion to finance the Iraqi War that "would have provided body armor for our military personnel."

My question is, "Why in the hell was our military over there without body armor in the first place?" Why were families of military personnel still purchasing body armorand shipping it to them at their own expense long after we watched that charade on the deck of the Abraham Lincoln which proclaimed "Mission Accomplished"? To me this is just another indictment of the lack of planning, the lack of sufficient personnel, and the inadequate supplies to support those who were there doing the fighting. In other words, it seems that our fearless leaders did not have the remotest clue as to what was needed to win both the battle and thewar.

Not too long after we withdrew from Vietnam, I saw a segment on 60 Minutes analyzing that debacle, and the host summed up the findings by stating, "If we learned anything from this engagement it was that the US should never undertake another operation such as this without the knowledge, consent and support of the populace, we should builda coalition of allies, and we should have an exit strategy.

All this seems to bear out the truth in the old axiom -- if we do not learn the lessons of history we are condemned to repeat them. We didn't learn -- and now we are paying the price. How long, oh Lord, how long?

Subject: Good reading on BuzzFlash plus my two cents...

In the July 26, 2004 BuzzFlash Mailbag, I read many very interesting comments on various subjects, including Michael Moore's movie. I love coming to this website to get more information and viewpoints. Keep up the good work, Buzz and fellow readers!

I have a few comments to some of these Mailbag contributors:

Sharon Swift: "subject: to leno, letterman and media" - Bush might as well forget the black voters, or at least most of them! After turning down speaking at the NAACP conference and so many black and hispanic voters being disenfranchised (500,000 just in one county in Florida!), the republican party has a lot of nerve asking for their support! I think the President of the NAACP should have been invited to speak at the DNC. I heard his speech at the NAACP conference a few weeks ago and was blown away! Maybe they can pencil him into the schedule just like they did Hillary Clinton!

Jerry Peurala: "subject: Why Does Bush Think He'll Be Re-elected?" - Let's see, first of all, Bush wasn't elected the first time. That was a "stolen" election, or if you prefer, an "appointment" by the supreme court! But rest assured that they already have plans in the works to steal the next one, too. They're already talking about postponing the election. More voters in Florida have already been put on the felony list and had their voting rights taken away. And let's not forget about the electronic voting machines! No recount because there's no paper trail! The CEO of Diebold said they would deliver the votes for Bush in 2004!

"If you want to win the election just control the machines." Charlie Matulka (Common Dreams -- Thom Hartmann)

JJ: "subject: Soap opera v. Fox News..." - Let's see: soap opera = wealth, greed, deception, lies, murder, power, hate.......republicans and Bush administration = ditto (maybe that's why Georgie goes on so many vacations. He has to catch up on his soaps to get more ideas for his plan to become the "dictator" he said he'd rather be). Yep, there's no difference between ditto monkeys, their head chimp, the right-wing media (liberal my tired petoot) and a good ole soap opera. Silly, maybe, but sadly true!

David Honish: "subject: BUSH WAS NOT AWOL" - Thanks for sharing that tidbit of information. When I started reading your letter, I was thinking "riiiiggghhhttt." But I read on and I see your point. And I agree! I'll never say "AWOL" again when referring to GWB! Not only should he be charged with high crimes against humanity and treason, but desertion as well!!! But wait a second, let's add another little tidbit that explains where he was at that time. Seems he was doing some community service in Texas for felony drug charges. Dear old dad had those records expunged, I'm sure.

Les Plush: "subject: Bush's missing months" - the government spent millions of taxpayers dollars to train GWB as a fighter pilot when he lost his flight status by refusing to get a physical because his personal doctor wasn't available to do the exam. Excuse me, but aren't those kind of physicals done by military doctors to begin with? He didn't want them to find out about his continued drug use. So he loses his flight status, goes "missing" (deserts!) and, oops, his military records were accidentally "destroyed." And then, poof, sorry, they weren't destroyed after all! Give me a break!

There is so much more out there about the chimp in charge and his fellow thugs but you won't hear about it in the US media. Thank goodness for the international media. I just wish more people knew to look for it.

Subject: Thank you!

Thanks for all you do and say from a fairly new subscriber. Keep it coming. Please convey my very special thank you to Ruth Lopez, Orlando, Fla, for her "Note to Tom Brokaw." That wonderful, talented lady said it better than anyone else.

I have watched every segment of the news, cable interviews and C-Span that she referred to in her article and she is flawless in her description. Thanks to her, I have just started my letters to the networks and to their individual purveyers(?) of news. (A fruitless exercise, I'm sure, but I'll feel better.) Again, Thank You!

Subject: me too

Buzz,

Just wanted you all to know that I've volunteered at my local Democratic office, too. I can't even vote in North Carolina (where we live in the summer), but I decided I simply had to do everything I can, wherever I might be.

When asked if I would donate one partial day a month, I responded, "What about one partial day a WEEK?" So, until I head back to Florida in the Fall, I'll be doing my part here.

It's time to go for the full court press -- we only have 99 days left to ensure our future. This is CRITICAL, folks, unless we are content to sit back and watch our country go down the tubes for another four years. For those of you who have the money, by all means donate to the cause. But for those who have can't, there are plenty of things to do. When I was a young mother with two kids under the age of two, all I could do to help end the Vietnam War was bake casseroles for the McGovern campaign workers. I also made phone calls in the evening, after the kids were in bed.

No matter what shift you work, or what your responsibilities, there is SOMETHING you can to for the cause. Let's get out there and DO it!! We're heading into the home stretch here -- WE CAN DO IT!! More to the point, we MUST do it!

Love your convention coverage,

Subject: relax

It's time for everyone to relax about the fear that the Republicans will turn John Kerry into a Dukakis. This is getting silly, folks. This is not 1988, and Kerry is not Dukakis. Bush and his brownshirt thugs have already spent 100 million bucks trying to use the old playbook against Kerry, and it hasn't worked. Yes, I have had my problems with the way Kerry campaigns and in the past I have written to BuzzFlash about my concerns. But geez, this little flap about that blue NASA anti-contamination suit is simply ludicrous. We Democrats, however, seem to always recoil in horror at these times, automatically assuming that sleazeballs like Ed Gillespie are going to pull off another smear job. To fall back on a sports analogy, sometimes we appear to be like the football running back who fears getting hit, or the boxer who is so fearful of his opponent's punches that he doesn't throw enough of his own. Kerry and Edwards and all of the party activists have to come out smoking, giving as good as they get and throwing more punches than the other guy. Lord knows, we have a limitless pile of material to use against this White House. To end on a positive note, however, I do notice that the Kerry team is exhibiting a nice little penchant for dumping the Republican slime right back on the heads of the "slimers." For example, after Kerry pointed out the curious timing behind the whole Sandy Berger "stolen documents" flap, the media seemed somewhat cowed. And, I liked the way Democrats were questioning the timing of the rather mysterious release of the NASA photo right on the eve of the Democratic convention. It forced the reporters to point out that John Glenn himself and two other dignitaries also had blue anti-contamination suits on. In any event, we need to keep hitting back, harder than they hit us -- and stop being so worried about sad little one-trick ponies like Karl Rove and Ed Gillespie or creeps like Norm Coleman.

Subject: Moore on O'Reilly?

{Tom Tomorrow, credentialed to the DNC, is following Michael Moore around there}

We head back to the Fleet Center and as we are getting out of the Town Car, Bill O'Reilly is across the street getting out of his limo. "Hey Moore, when ya gonna come on my show?" he shouts. Michael responds, "When you see the rest of my movie." (O'Reilly walked out of the premiere halfway through.) He claims to have gone back and seen the whole thing, but when pressed for specifics, hems and haws. Nonetheless, Michael takes him at his word and they stand there out on the street negotiating the terms of the appearance as various Guardsmen and law enforcement types gawk and snap photos. They finally settle on a format: they will take turns asking each other questions. O'Reilly agrees not to edit the segment, and to explain in the intro that Michael has only been boycotting him because he walked out of the premiere. (It should air tonight. We'll see if he keeps the last part of that promise.)

Subject: Stop watching the major media

My suggestion to all the BuzzFlash readers who are angry with the various major news media for their obvious bias: Stop watching them! They have become like 8-track tape players, obsolete. They are unreliable and deceptive and totally undependable. I stopped watching their obviously right-wing slant of the news several years ago.

Just recognize that they are doing you harm and stop watching them. You can get all of the truth and important news off the internet. BuzzFlash fills my needs for news along with the BBC and NPR. Besides, the newscasts of the major news networks are aimed at a 13-year-old's mental level. You deserve better than that. Pull their plug and find out what's really going on.

Subject: Comparing Chelsea and the Bush twins

I thought the start of the Convention was superb! We need to send Bush away! After the convention ended I remained watching the channel for a moment or two (sorry, don't remember which one because they all look the same to me - it was still the national feed) and the talking head bimbo made a reference of how Chelsea grew up in the White House just like the Bush girls are doing or have done or some such nonsense! I was so pissed I turned off the boob tube. Are people that stupid? The Bushies twins were in freaking college or just starting and Chelsea was of grade school age! Also, the Bush twins never lived in the WH while Chelsea lived nowhere else! It is astounding! Thanks BuzzFlash!

Subject: Thinking the unthinkable

Hello fellow BuzzFlash readers:

I have to say that I'm proud to have grown up in and to live in one of the shrinking pockets of thinking Americans (Boston/Cambridge). Despite the inconvenience, I'm also proud to have the DNC hosted in Boston and pray that everything goes smoothly without any neocon orchestrated violence, disruptions, terrorist acts or other Rivian shennanigans.

It seemed that PBS in Boston was the only network that carried lengthy coverage of the convention. Yeah last night left me pining for the days of Clinton, Carter and JFK. From all I have read about Jimmy Carter, he walks the Christian walk along with Christ and not just talks a big Christian talk.

I hope that the Dems can maintain the positive energy up through November. Since the repugs have set up a war room near the Fleet Center, I'm hoping they mind their manners (like expecting a pig to sprout wings and fly). Hmmm, will the Democrats be allowed to set up a war room within spitting distance of the Repug National Convention? I would assume not!

This brings me to the Subject line. A lot of people I have talked to, as well as myself, have a deep feeling that bush will steal the election again, and nobody will utter so much as a peep in protest. I've dealt with people very similar to the bush mob and know they will stop at "nothing" to win, no matter who gets killed or who suffers. These people have unquenchable egos, have tasted almost unlimited power, and will not give that up. I would not put it past them to cancel the election, or worse, orchestrate another 9/11 to scare the sheeple into submission.

I pray daily that God brings honor, justice, honesty and fair play back into this country and to get rid of the lying, thieving, murdering hypocrites that are holding the country and world hostage. Many times I feel my prayers fall on deaf ears; maybe God is on their side. It's becoming too hard to keep up the faith when the thugs seem to always win and come out without a scratch, but when you have most of the Fortune 500, banks, almost all the media and the Amerikan Taliban on your side, you seldom lose.

I visit BuzzFlash, AlterNet, Bartcop and a number of other news and journalism sites daily, and each day I get a little bit angrier. This past weekend I purchase DVDs of "Outfoxed" and "The Fog of War." They are both excellent documentaries and I recommend them to any BuzzFlash reader who has not seen them.

Sorry, but I just had to vent some fear and frustration.

God bless and keep all of you in his protection.

Subject: 911 Commission Report

The 911 commission is promoting its report and recommended changes. What everyone seems to forget is a report done, and delivered to Bush in JANUARY of 2001, the Hart-Rudman report. This report is a comprehensive analysis of our national security demands for the 21st century. It was IGNORED by the Bush administration.

Excerpt:

In Road Map for National Security, the Commission has endeavored to complete the logic of its three phases of work, moving from analysis to strategy to the redesign of the structures and processes of the U.S. national security system. For example, in Phase I the Commission stressed that mass-casualty terrorism directed against the U.S. homeland was of serious and growing concern. (emphasis added) It therefore proposed in Phase II a strategy that prioritizes deterring, defending against, and responding effectively to such dangers. Thus, in Phase III, it recommends a new National Homeland Security Agency to consolidate and refine the missions of the nearly two dozen disparate departments and agencies that have a role in U.S. homeland security today.

http://www.cfr.org/pdf/Hart-Rudman3.pdf

Maybe if Bush had heeded this report, the information that was at their fingertips (Moussaoui's laptop, the Phoenix memo, the flight schools etc.) would have been put together and 3000 people (and over 900 soldiers) would still be alive. But instead, Bush ignored this bipartisan report, and we all know the result.

Subject: Did you see Medea Benjamin dragged off the floor by police?

I finally made it into the Fleet Center tonight at 9:30 and one hour later I was kicked out along with our entire Code Pink crew (including an Iraq vet and a Viet Nam vet).

Medea, Gael, Frances and I were walking on the fourth floor wearing pink slips and carrying a banner that read "End the Occupation in Iraq." We were getting so many thumbs up and no security bothered to stop us at all. We then went down to the third floor and ended up in the press room just as Teresa started to talk. We simply stood in the room to watch her speak and suddenly some young guy noticed us and said we couldn't be there.

So we left the room. The young guy followed us and called for back up and meanwhile kept STANDING in front of our banner so that no one could photograph us. He was joined by another young clone.

He even tried to take us to task for trying to distract from Teresa's message. I pointed out that we were simply watching Teresa when HE caused the disturbance, so it was his fault if Teresa's moment was derailed.

Meanwhile, somehow Medea got a pass to the floor and she took the banner in there while Teresa was still talking. She got through, but several guys ran after her and tried to tell security she couldn't go in, but it was too late.

According to what I heard from those involved, Medea held up her banner and Kerry people tried to surround her with Kerry signs. So the Viet Nam vet, Hal Muskat, helped her to hold the banner up higher.

I don't know the order of events that followed, but the police came (summoned by those overzealous young men) and somehow determined that Medea didn't have the correct pass, so they were going to eject her. At some moment, Teresa said that her husband would never send people off to war for a lie. Medea yelled, "Then bring our troops back from Iraq!"

Whether the police grabbed Medea for the banner or the pass, and exactly when she yelled, I can't testify to, having not witnessed it, but I saw her come out, carried by police and by then she was chanting "Bring our troops home!"

I followed, and they took her to a room behind a curtain where we were not allowed to follow. The secret service then questioned me and Gael Murphy. The press had been alerted and they were there, too. Frances spoke for us. I had wanted to say that 95% of the delegates agreed that our troops should come home.

Meanwhile, we had been joined in waiting for Medea to be released by Thomas from the Kucinich camp (all the Kucinich people are wearing pink bandanas in solidarity with Code Pink) and Kelly Dougherty, the Iraq vet who is staying here also.

After the LAST media person, a reporter from the Boston Phoenix, had left, the police came in and confiscated all of our passes and escorted us out of the building. I kept looking for cameras, but there were none. I was irate that they were ejecting us, especially the vets! One of the vets had left a bag behind, but even with all the cops, with essentially NOTHING else to do (one of them told Medea that this incident was the "worst" that had happened!), no one would escort the vet back to retrieve his bag.

The police were fairly absurd, barking at us, etc. My favorite was how they kept yelling at us to keep moving -- including the police woman in FRONT, whom we were following! As if we could go faster than she! They finally released Medea, who said the police had left it up to the DNC, who told the police they wanted no arrests. They did try to find out how we'd gotten the passes and since Pacifica radio had been questioning security as to Medea's status, they were told that if they'd given her the pass they'd be thrown out and not welcomed back.

Anyway, not long after I was carted off by police myself, but that's a separate story I'll send along shortly.

Subject: downright funny if...

It would have been downright funny if it hadn't been so sad -- listening to the right wing ditto heads opining about Jimmy Carter! Their interpretation of President Carter's lifetime of accomplishment was pure fantasy. He is a man who became President, and accomplished more during his time in office than any Repuglican ever has, a man of honor and integrity, a man who got Menachem Begin and Anwar Sadat at the same table to sign the Israel /Egypt Peace Treaty. A man who has continued to serve people worldwide. Their commentary was downright ridiculous and shows us all just how petty the right wing radicals really are in America!
