Subj: Selective Service Board Volunteer

Dear BuzzFlash,

Months ago you referenced the Selective Service Board's website which was seeking out volunteers.

https://www4.sss.gov/localboardmembers/bminquiry.asp

As a patriotic American I signed up as a volunteer. Subsequently I have been contacted by the Chicago national office and a local representative and I will be joining my Local Selective Service Board in the near future.

I believe it is imperative that like minded BuzzFlash readers sign-up for these boards. Training is one day paid a year and there is no other activity unless or until the draft is reactivated. These boards will decide who will fight and who will be deferred from Bush's wars of conquest. Would you want your family and friends' children be selected by Rush Limbaugh's dittoheads?

Sincerely,

BuzzFlash Reader

Subj: My brain is on spin-dry

Dear BuzzFlash,

Ouch. I am in Europe, so I see the saccharine version of CNN, and even that is giving me a headache. There is Mad-cow, (just read fast food nation and tell me that you are surprised). Then we are in a certain color for Christmas, and it is not red and green, it is orange. And the USA has even told France to not fly a potential weapon of mass destruction into the holy borders of the USA. And then I sat and watched the SOP for airplanes that has been put in place since 9-11, such as communication between NORAD and the FAA, fighter jet surveillance of suspicious airplanes, and even the possibility of shooting down an unarmed civilian jet, just in case the president is too busy doing a photo-op somewhere and can't be disturbed. I am too mentally unstable to ask what the hell GWB was doing on 9-11, but now he admits through the news that things had to change? Please tell me that Dean and Clark will stay together, both be elected president and maybe change this Nightmare on Laundromat Street.

Larry

PS I am suffering from chronic pain syndrome also, could I maybe get 2,000 Oxycontins to help me with my problem?

Subj: The Grinch who stole Tongass

To the editor

If a million old-growth trees fall in the Alaskan forest, and no one is there to hear it, did they really fall? Like most Americans, I have never seen the Tongass National Forest in person, but I know it is real, I know it is beautiful, and I know it gives me a deep feeling of peace knowing there are some wild places that yet go untouched by the hand of mankind. As Americans, we each "own" part the largest remaining American rain forest. It is the day before Christmas, and I have other things to do than write a letter to the editor, but like the Grinch who stole Christmas, the George W. Bush administration is stuffing our Christmas trees up the chimney while we sleep, with the Christmas eve sanctioning of the building of roads and the killing of the ancient trees in this sacred place. Merry Christmas everyone. After stealing our treasury and giving it to oil, drug, and weapons manufacturers, the irreplaceable national heritage of our last great forest is being handed to the timber industry. You're a mean one Mr. Grinch. As our children dream the dreams of innocence, you are stealing the lungs of their planet - Wake up parents... wake up America....

Subj: mailbag 12/24/03 (The best of holiday seasons to the best website)

Well, Buzz, I am certainly glad you, at last, apologized to all the Neanderthal men of the world...for comparison to Rush Limbaugh. That is now done, and all is right with the world. Sometimes, it is hard to keep one's perspective about comparisons to whatever...Like Bush's comparison to a chimp...it is just a given, we cannot help it!

There is a funny chat room I go on and it is supposed to be one that leans to the left...but, we always have someone who wants to argue...and says the most stupid of all things to get us riled. I would say it is 90% left and 10% right, or idiot, as I like to think...and they are, believe me. Last night..late after I was done with the preparation for today...I got on it...and I literally ran two dimwits off.. by asking simply why we went into Iraq!! They had been baiting me by saying that Bush was the greatest thing ever, bringing freedom to Iraq....and I never flinched...I asked over and over why we went into Iraq. At first, they called me ignorant.."Kde, are you really that ignorant?" and I said, this is not ignorant...I want you to tell me in your own words, why we invaded this country!

Now, firstly, you see, these people never want to hear the word 'Invade'...to them, Bush is doing everything they 'think' he said he was going to do! They listen to what all their far right wing nut friends tell them,..then they repeat it and repeat it, until it is gospel...to them! And, before you know it, it is not even worth it...they just give up, when they get tired of you asking the same thing, over and over...they leave.

I have found that it is the only thing that will work....you have to ask rightwingnuts, straightforward: "Why did we go into Iraq...why did we invade that country?"

Before long...Clinton and "BJ's" come into the conversations...and then your next move is to ask when Clinton was last president....and where is Binladin..and where are the WMDS...and The Anthrax killer...and all the things that have been created to divert us away from the Bombing of the WTC.....they cannot and will not try to answer...!!! It is not important to them, that the President of this United States, lied repeatedly to us, to get us to invade that country!!

His arrogance was never more evident, than the night I forced myself to watch him on Diane Sawyer's interview....when he had the audacity to say to her.."Diane, what difference does it make if he had them or not." I do not think I will ever forget that, and the wind being knocked out of me because of the evident lies he has told, and the fact that we are so impotent...we seem to take one step forward and two backwards...we just have to try so hard in 2004 to get rid of this man!!!

Buzz..go into 2004, just like you are now...the best website on the airwaves...and we will all love you just like we do now!!!

Subj: Kudos to Patricia Taylor

Many thanks to Patricia for her very witty and hilarious "The Ridge Who Stole Christmas."

I've been conducting a personal poll while out shopping in Union Square, on Bart, the cable cars, in Peet's Coffee, or shops...asking people what they think of the Orange Alert. Jokes or Big Yawn...is the size of it. People think Tommy is a lunkhead.

And BTW, in Hugh Grant's feel good holiday film, "Love Actually" the kicker is a stab at Bush., which was pretty amazing, given that this is a big box office holiday release. It is set in London, and Grant plays the PM. "Bush" comes to visit and they hold a joint press conference. Grant's character has had it, and during the news conference blasts "Bush" for being a bully. People in the theater laughed and cheered! Yea Hugh! I loved it and Patricia's poem was equally as delightful. Thanks, Buzz, for featuring it.

Subj: Saddam Capture

Looking back over the past year, weren't the American people told that the reason for our invasion of Iraq was to effectuate "regime change", and to rid Iraq of Saddam Hussein? Well... Saddam is now in the custody of the U.S. military, and his regime is gone. Last Spring, the Bush administration was careful to continually stress that conquest, colonialization and occupation were not in the Bush game plan. So...here we are though, and it looks like we are in Iraq to stay. No WMD, Saddam is gone, etc., yet there we shall remain. Gee--it all ends up looking pretty much like an occupation to me. Thus far though, as far as the Democratic Presidential candidates are concerned, only Dennis Kucinich had the "audacity" to point out that now that Saddam is gone, we should just pack up and leave, because the specific mission as it was originally stated to the American people has now been concluded. But of course, the major corporate media will not think to bring up these unpleasant inconsistencies in the Bush war policy.

Subj: Buzz headline...late 12/25/03

Is there anyone out there who is surprised by this announcement???? I never, ever thought there was a risk...a terrorist threat! If France knows nothing about it, and it was supposed to be a threat to the French...how does a fruitcake administration explain that?

And, why do we no longer even act surprised when we find the truth? This is the most "backed into a corner" this country has ever been...and since every branch of government is republican....I see no way out, except to get a little nastiness and go after 'em in the most under the table way we can!!...We have to win in November, Folks...we have to convince these candidates that it is to save the lives and the sanity of all Americans!!!

Subj: only a moron

i saw on the news that the white house people are now saying the uranium report bush spoke of in that speech was just bad fact checking.

jesus, it's not like someone mistakenly called mauve pink! to believe it was just bad fact checking one would have to believe bush was a moron who just reads whatever was put in front of him by his handlers without question. only a moron would state as a fact the uranium claim without making damn sure it was true knowing full well he would be saying this to the entire world with HIS CREDIBILITY ON THE LINE!

Subj: CON HATE MAIL - IMPORTANT SUGGESTION TO BuzzFlash (and BuzzFlash READERS)

The recent MSNBC/Scarborough rant about "anti-bush" posts they presumably found surfing the net reminded me of an idea I first thought of back when Daschle was attacked for suggesting that Right Wing Fanatic radio instigated hate mail and possibly more from its fringe listeners.

I envision a website (www.hatemail.com ??? ) where anyone can see hate mail, email or other communications, listed by date and subject so it can be easily cross referenced to a talk show topic database. This should only have actual/original material either faxed or forwarded (no interpretive personal accounts to eliminate bias).

This would result not only in an extensive database of hate mail but also help identify any possible links with pundit mental diarrhea, by date, subject and threat...

I wish BuzzFlash or someone else would follow up on this... I would if i had the resources...

Subj: Thank you, my true American friends

Hello everybody,

I'm from Europe (Switzerland) and i was so thrilled when i found BuzzFlash! I've always wondered where all those intelligent and nice Americans have gone since Bush became "President". I read BuzzFlash ever single day and i'm always so excited to read the mailbag because it feels really good to read your intelligent, funny and very often scary comments.

It is beyond me why people can't or don't want to see the truth regarding Bush & Co. Even Bush said that there is "no link between 9/11 and Saddam". The WMD's never turned up. Those were two big lies he told the American people to scare them. And despite the fact that his lies were exposed some people still defend him and believe him... I just don't get it.

Anyway...

I would like to thank you all for being who you are. You are the true America. You are Americans who people admire and want to be friends with. Please, never give up. Be never silent. You are right and no matter how nasty or cruel the attacks from others are, you are the ones who are right. Period.

This European supports and likes you all very much.

Subj: Media Reports No Deaths on Christmas

I noticed yesterday that there were no reports of causalities or deaths in Iraq, but there was a report last night that something happened and the news said "one soldier was injured", I immediately realized that the media purposely were told not to report a death on Christmas, and I knew I was going to hear something like this AP report when I checked out the news this morning, check out the way they cover up the death on Christmas..."a day earlier"! That is Christmas! Orwellian or what?

Iraq Rebels Kill 4 U.S. GIs Over 2 Days

By CHRISTOPHER TORCHIA, Associated Press Writer

BAGHDAD, Iraq - An American soldier died in a rebel ambush and another was killed while trying to defuse a bomb Friday near the Iraqi town of Baqouba, where two soldiers were killed a day earlier in a mortar attack, the U.S. military said.

Subject: Photographer' Dilemma

Buzz, a joke someone forwarded me . . .

With all your honor and dignity, what would you do? This test has only one question, but it's a very important one. Please don't answer it without giving it some serious thought. By giving an honest answer you will be able to see pretty much where you stand morally and ethically. The test features an unlikely, completely hypothetical situation where you will have to make a decision. Remember that your answer needs to be honest but yet spontaneous.

You're in the middle of a terrifyingly chaotic South Florida, caused by a hurricane and awful tide surge flooding. There are crashing waves of wind whipped water all around you. You are a CNN photographer and you are in the middle of this great disaster. The situation is nearly hopeless but you're trying to capture the calamity for posterity. There are houses blowing apart and people drowning all about, disappearing into the raging waters. Nature is showing off all of its awesome power and is ripping everything away to destruction. Suddenly, you see a terrified man struggling to maneuver a big SUV. He is fighting for his life, trying not to be taken away by the wind and water. You move closer. Somehow the man looks familiar and, astonished, you recognize him. It's George W. Bush! At the same time you realize the relentless storm is about to take him away forever. You have two options: With a near by rope you can save the life of the President, or you can become one of the most famous photographers in history by shooting a Pulitzer prize winning photo depicting the violent death of the leader of the free world. And here's the question: Should you use your digital or film camera ?

Subj: Bush's Folly

I wrote you about the notion of "planting" (probably a poor choice of words on my part, but I hope you know what I'm getting at...) terminology in the media, or at least starting in the alternative net discussion universe so as to match the right wing at that game. God knows they'll plow ahead doing it and they'll succeed; we're chumps if we don't try it ourself. And if we sincerely believe the principles underlying the terms, why not?

"Bush's Folly" might stick. Simple, catchy, memorable - to the point.

BTW, your link to the blog story r.e. the term "pessimistic" is on target with this issue and continues to make me think progressives need to get consistent verbal messages that can be employed in the way I've described. Uphill battle, but worth trying. We must try virtually ANYTHING we can think of in the next 10 months.

Subj: My letter to the Morgan Hill Editor regarding your slanderous attack on General Clark

Mr: Collins - below you will find the text of my letter to the editor.

First though I must add that upon reading your piece one more time I realized you are a liar! or you presented as fact something you did not check which is the same thing

General Clark was not fired, let alone "being fired for ethics violations"!

You sir, are a vile example of the gutter politics that have this nation immersed in a permanent fog of demagoguery.

---------------------------------

To the Editor of the Morgan Hills Times

The Robert Collins opinion piece on General Clark transcends all boundaries of decency and respect due any American hero.

Mr. Collins chooses to present partisan driven innuendo and slander as fact. In doing so he, like the others who began this vile attack on General Clark place partisanship above integrity.

General Clark's record speaks for itself. So do the actions of those like Collins, Sheldon and Schwarzkopf who choose to breech the code of honor and ethics American Military Leaders are presumed to abide by for the lowest of partisan motives.

It is my experience that public judgments of character are often a better indicator of the character of the judge than that of the judged.

Reasonable people know that an officer who has dedicated 30 some years to serving his country does not earn 4 stars and become Supreme Allied Commander without character and integrity beyond reproach.

Subj: Wounded Vets Forced Out of the Military at Less Than Half Pay

R--- K-----, who lost his left leg below the knee, makes about $20,000 a year as a staff sergeant. Once he leaves the army, he will receive about $8,000 a year in benefits. --from a December 18 CBS news item.

$8,000 a year. $4.00 an hour based on the standard 2000 hour work year. The Bush government is kicking R.K. (I edited his name as he's been wounded enough already) out of the army despite his being perfectly able to hold a non-cannon-fodder military post. They are forcing him into an unemployed disabled status, effectively telling other potential employers that they consider him an unemployable cripple, rather than a healthy amputee. They are paying him well below the minimum wage to support his family. And oh, yes, they authorized a Purple Heart.

This has the Stink of Sin all around it, as a preacher of my acquaintance used to say. I am a proudly antiwar progressive, in an extremely high tax bracket, and if I had a President that listened, I would tell him or her to damn well raise my taxes a few bucks, if that's what it would take to allow men and women like R.K. to have a little dignity and a half decent job.

Peace, and Hope for an elected government in the New Year!

Subj: Democrats vs. Republicans

To whom it may concern:

I speak as a middle of the road Republican who thinks that we cannot take four more years of George Bush and this administration. I don't believe I left the Republican party. The Republican party has left me. I believed in keeping the government out of our personal lives. This administration is into our lives more than ever before. A flavor of a gestapo type of government. The two primary parties are so much alike but they claim to be so different. I see the Republican party staking claim to the Democrats Ideals and the Democrats are letting them get away with it. (for one example) Why are blacks switching parties? (think about it) Republicans are saying what blacks want to hear.

Things I think people should Know.

Q. Why are there a lot of conservative radio programs and why are conservatives popular?
A. Because they say what people want to hear.

Q. What they say, is it the truth?
A. No! But it is what they want to here.

Q. Can you give an example?
A. Yes. The biggest "twist" is taxes. Everyone is against taxes. When a Republican speaks, it comes out that the Democrats are for taxes. (by "twist," I mean how the Republicans are so brilliant in the twisting the meaning of one thing to mean another) When a Republican says they are for something, they imply that Democrats are against it. (that is not true)

Q. What else do you see?
A. I see that the Republicans are continually on the "offense" and the democrats are continually on the "defense." So who is most likely to win a battle such as this?

Q. What would you advise?
A. The two parties actually believe in many of the same things. We all believe in helping the starving populations of the world. But the Democrats believe in helping the starving in our country first. The Republicans believe in helping the other countries and cutting the funds that help our starving. (this is what you want to convey to the public) The Republicans want charities to take care of our starving. And who support these charities? (Then why not make it "equal" and let everyone support these "charities" in a form of a tax?)

Q. What is a good example of "misleading statements?"
A. One of the best is how the republicans keep pounding into our heads, "Compassionate Republicans." How can the Democrats stand by without challenging that statement? The Democrats should be putting down Republicans for not knowing what the word compassion means. And pounding on it. The Republicans are very smart in their "smearing tactics." When one says a "white lie," they all repeat it as a truth.

Q. When you mention "tax," it is a big turn off. How would you get around this?
A. Educate the people. Everyone knows that what built this country is taxes. Everyone, with a brain, is willing to pay their fair share of taxes, but they will try to get out of it if possible. Take the taxes for the license plates in Florida for instance, we have a different license plate that could represent almost every state in the U.S. (close to 50 plates) For these special plates, you pay about $20 over and above the cost of the plate. (A voluntary pd. extra cost) But let the state raise the cost a couple of bucks and these same people will raise the roof.

I and this letter could go on and on but most likely has been a waste of time. (I hope not)

Sincerely,

Donald F. Kelly

Subj: The Bush Thanksgiving in Iraq

To BuzzFlash:

I can't believe I'm the only one that thought of this.

I was listening to the LBJ tapes on C-Span radio. LBJ referenced an aircraft that he traveled on as President. I don't recall the exact aircraft he was referring to, but it was a twin-engined craft that he enjoyed traveling on because it was able to land on short runways and was unobtrusive. The proverbial light bulb went off in my head that THERE IS NO WAY THAT PRESIDENT BUSH WENT TO BAGHDAD ON AIRFORCE 1.

Think about it; the closed shades on the windows, the "chosen" reporters on board, the British Airways false reporting of seeing AF-1. Common sense; if you were the most powerful man in the world traveling to one of the most dangerous places in the world, would you travel on the most recognized aircraft in the world? The only pictures that are released to the world are President Bush offering an ersatz turkey to the troops. A conspicuous absence of AF-1 photos. Like, duh, it took me since Thanksgiving to figure this out.

Where are any journalists; liberal, counter-culture, far-left, Islamic, USA-haters, International media, or the Simpsons that thought of this scenario? It took only me to figure this out? These guys are much, much, much better than we ever realized. People, get on the stick. People shit!!!!!, media get on the stick!!!!!!!!! We are so lame that we can't even see the obvious when it is thrown in our faces. Who would have thunk of that? Oh yeah, happy holidays.

Subj: Very Interesting Healthcare Survey

I don't know if you've seen this or not, but there is an amazing poll conducted in Mississippi recently which shows that a large majority of the state's citizens want health coverage for every Mississippian and would be willing to pay higher taxes for it (http://www.mhap.org/healthyfutures/).

Even more amazing, by a slim margin, more respondents identified themselves with the Republican party than any other party (and the largest percentage of respondents were white). Yet G.O.P. errand boy Haley Barbour was elected on a platform of no tax increases. To be fair, the survey was not released until Oct. 2003, so it was not able to be much of a campaign issue.

What strikes me as interesting, though, is that this just proves Michael Moore right. Even in ultraconservative Mississippi, people do not really favor extreme right-wing policies. People really are more compassionate and yes, liberal, than they probably care to admit. Average people are definitely more compassionate than the Republican Party would have us believe. I'd like to think that websites like BuzzFlash have had an impact on these people's thinking, and that maybe, just maybe, we're beginning to turn a corner in the fight against the right wing and the neocons.

Subj: "Jobless Recovery"

Dear BuzzFlash:

I am a retired psychiatric social worker from rural, republican upstate NY. One of the largest employers in our tri-county area is the Mead Corp. Last week, their "parent" company, Mead Westvaco, announced plans to "cut" 1000 jobs and close some plants in 2004. They estimate that this will result in a $525 million profit.(The Daily Star; Oneonta, NY; 12-20-03, pg A3)

This represents part of the "Bush Economic Recovery." The administration will gush that this represents an upsurge in the national economy. Certainly, those who make the $525 million will make a generous donation to the president's re-election campaign.

For the 1000 people laid-off, it represents something completely different. It is hard to make the monthly house and auto payment on unemployment benefits. Fuel and groceries are not luxuries. Paying for your children's college education is difficult for the working class, and impossible for those without a job.

I just got my property taxes in the mail today. They have sky-rocketed since 2000. School taxes are increasing at the same rate. County services are not able to meet the needs of deserving people in our rural communities.

I have been active in grass-roots politics for many years. I've had many exciting experiences over the years. Yet I've never been involved in anything as pressing as the need to organize people to to voter education, registration, and out-reach, to insure that a strong democratic ticket is elected in 2004. My nephews introduced me to "BuzzFlash" today, and I want to say that I will be supporting your work between now and November, 2004.

Subj: "Ludicrous" Dean

As we spend a billion dollars a week to maintain a national "orange alert," the Washington Post professes to find "ludicrous" Howard Dean's statement that the world is no safer from terrorism now than it was before Saddam's capture. What is, in fact, ridiculous and laughable is the juxtaposition of Ridge and Rumsfeld's recent pronouncements that we are at the greatest risk of attack since 9/11 with the Post's bleating protestations that it's so obvious we are all safer now. Perhaps a glimpse at their own front page before cribbing from Republican talking points will save them future embarrassment.

Subj: Loeb/Cohen

Dear BuzzFlash,

Did anyone else notice that Washington Post reporter Vernon Loeb failed to mention that Eliot Cohen is a neo-con associated with the Bush administration when he quoted Cohen in his December 28 article In Iraq, Pace of U.S. Casualties Has Accelerated? According to Right Web, Cohen is a member of the Pentagon’s Defense Policy Board, and is also a member of the Project for the New American Century and the Committee for the Liberation of Iraq. Since Cohen was quoted optimistically in regard to the casualties in Iraq, it might have been helpful to readers to know that Cohen’s optimism is a reflection of the administration’s point of view. In addition, since the neo-cons have been so successful in predicting outcomes in Iraq, the fact that Cohen is a major neo-con might have been useful to know as well.

Subj: Mad Cow Lobbyists

Posted at Economists for Dean By Lerxst There were a couple of good articles on the politics of mad cow disease in Friday's Wall Street Journal. What interested me was this tidbit in one of the articles which describes the influence of the lobby and how it actually was responsible for the disease entering the food supply:

The National Cattlemen's Beef Association has been active in Washington for more than a century and is considered one of the capital's most influential lobby groups. It draws influence from a combination of experienced lobbyists, strategic campaign contributions and friendships with lawmakers from influential cattle states such as Texas. All told, the livestock industry in 2000 gave $4.7 million to federal candidates, with 79% of that total going to Republican candidates. George Bush was the largest recipient of any candidate that year, getting about $253,550 in donations. The industry spent $1.5 million in lobbying in 2000, according to a report compiled by the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics, a watchdog research organization. The association has scored at least two political victories in recent years. One is its success in fending off attempts by the soybean industry to get vegetarian soy products included in officially recommended U.S. school menus. Another, achieved just months ago, was the defeat of a Senate-passed provision that would have banned all non-ambulatory "downer" cows -- such as the one that tested positively for mad-cow disease this week -- from entering the U.S. food supply.

A second article describes the brazen political strategy that the lobby will employ to distort the media coverage:

Terry Stokes was finishing paperwork Tuesday afternoon when he heard the news that set in motion the most rehearsed plan in the history of the National Cattlemen's Beef Association. "There's been a presumptive positive identified at a dairy farm in Washington State," Mr. Stokes told an emergency meeting of about two dozen staff members at the association's headquarters in Centennial, Colo. A similar meeting took place at its offices in Washington, D.C. No further explanation or instruction was needed. Mr. Stokes, the association's chief executive, and his colleagues went to work. Their goal: Control the debate. ...The discovery of the Washington state cow also triggered long-rehearsed plans at other organizations, like the U.S. Department of Agriculture and McDonald's Corp. The National Restaurant Association "has been working since 1990 to prepare for this day," said Steven Grover, the association's vice president of health and safety regulatory affairs. The beef association followed a Tuesday Agriculture Department news conference with one of its own. Speaking to 144 reporters and other participants, Mr. Stokes and his colleagues delivered messages they had written long ago: The U.S. beef supply is the safest in the world. Consumers shouldn't be afraid to eat meat because the infected material from the cow wouldn't enter the food supply. The discovery of this case actually shows that the government surveillance system works. In the first 24 hours after the news broke, Mr. Stokes estimates, he and his team gave more than 100 interviews.

Subj: Re: "King George goofs"

I followed Ms. Jennifer Rose Emick's (12/24 mailbag) lead and sent the following letter to about 60 different newspapers with a single click:

"This message is being sent from www.georgebush.com, as part of a canned, mass-mailing letter program, while pretending to be from an individual writing on his or her own. I have not selected any of the pre-written paragraphs I am encouraged to include in my letter, nor have I sent the complete pre-written letter also available here. I hope you will visit this site to familiarize yourself with the stock messages offered so you will recognize them for what they are when they appear as ostensibly genuine letters from 'concerned citizens.'"

I hope others will do as Ms. Emicks suggests.

Subj: Green misquotes Florida election law

Hi BuzzFlash,

I would appreciate it if you would also post this letter to the editor I sent in response to the misquoting of Florida election law by the greens in the article you posted about the now repentant greens who voted for Nader in 2000. I think that BuzzFlash readers have the right to know about how the greens are still lying in a desperate effort to cover up what Nader did to our country in 2000. Thanks.

In a desperate effort to deflect from the truth that Ralph Nader made it possible for Bush to steal the 2000 election by his siphoning off of 97,000 votes from Al Gore in Florida in your 12/27 article, "Nader voters helped install a tyrant", Colorado green party spokesperson Kristin Marr misquoted Florida election law. Unlike Ms. Marr, I actually used to live in Florida, so I know the disputed territory and Florida election law extremely well. Contrary to Ms. Marr, Florida election law in 2000 didn't allow for a statewide handcount of the uncounted votes. All statewide candidates had the right to ask for a handcount of uncounted votes in the counties where they disputed the vote count. The Gore campaign followed Florida election law to the letter. In addition, in a nationally televised address, Al Gore did offer to end his vote count challenge if Bush would agree to a statewide count of all of the uncounted votes. Bush refused this offer. In trying to deflect from Nader's roll in helping to install Bush, the green party is still lying to cover up this truth by now lying about Florida election law. Nader's entire 2000 campaign was based on a total lie. Anyone who believes that Al Gore would've put our country in the disastrous mess that Bush has put it in is seriously out of touch with reality. Let's also not forget about the $5 million dollar Nader tv ad campaign in 2000 that was a false attack on Al Gore and made no mention of Bush that was paid for by the republican leadership council which is a wing of the republican party. The truth is, another tyrant was installed when 2 parties split the majority vote in Germany in the early 1930's. His name was Adolph Hitler.

Hey Buzz,

Notice how George Will The Republican Shill keeps writing op-eds that claim Dean is good for the GOP and Bush? What's up with that? The Republicans must be scared sh*tless of Dean!

I bet Kerry, Lieberman, and Gephardt are loving it, too. Hell, they're probably helping Will write that B.S.

I've found that GOP pundits live in Opposite World. When they said Gore should drop his populist rhetoric, he did - and it was a bad move. So, when they say Democrats shouldn't be angry, it means we SHOULD be angry. And when they say Dean is good for Bush, it means Dean is bad for Bush.

Besides, what idiot Democrat would take election advice from Republican right-wingers (other than Lieberman)? Am I supposed to read Will's crap and go, " Hmmm, I think that right wing whacko is on to something"? Sorry, but I ain't buyin' it!

Apparently, neither is Dean and his massive following.

Subj: Father Greeley's Column

Buzz,

Thought you might like to link . . . .

"Gen. Curtis LeMay, who led the firebomb raids on Japan (far more destructive than the atom bombs), once remarked that if the United States should lose the war, he would be tried as a war criminal. The United States won the war and no Americans were tried as war criminals. The victors are never tried.

The Bush administration is planning a trial for Saddam. The Europeans are insisting that it must be a ''fair'' trial, whatever that might be for such a man. No one in the Bush administration will be tried for the unjust and unnecessary Iraq war -- at least not by a court on Earth."

Subj: Lying can get complicated.

With regards to the story of Paul Bremer unknowingly contradicting the lies of Tony Blair, I am reminded of the words of Sir Walter Scott:

"Oh, what a tangled web we weave
When first we practice to deceive!"

Subj: Bush Government Occupation of Iraq

Dear Beloved BuzzFlash Familia:

In your endlessly excellent coverage of current events, would you be so kind as to consider the following regarding Iraq? Can we please stop referring to Iraqis who want foreigners out of their country as "insurgents" and "Hussein collaborators" and "rebels" and so forth.

At least, if the shoe were on the other foot and Iraq had invaded the U.S., would those of us who opposed the invasion be "insurgents" and "Bush collaborators" and "rebels" etc.?

And speaking of verbiage, could we please please please all stop referring to people such as Hussein, bin Laden et al by their first names? Fer crissakes, can we cut out of this chronic GOP sophmoricness? They have started a stampede of reducing everyone they diss to a first-person familiarity but we don't have to follow suit.

With endless gratitude for your endless work for a sane world!

Peace,

Subject: That sinking suspicion

Hi Buzz,

Having followed Bush's gutting style of governing for the last 3 years and having seen the ever increasing gloat factor become more and more crass and obvious I think I'm not alone when I say I have the horribly gut-sinking feeling that what we are seeing is the behavior of a man who already knows he has won. He acts just like the Bully who KNOWS he's safe and who knows he's already the winner, gleefully letting his victims believe they still have a chance of winning a fight with him.

It's the increasing obviousness of not bothering to hide the facts about what his administration is doing. This has been happening recently to a greater degree than ever before. Probably the most blatant example of someone who has arrived at that stage where what the 'enemy' knows is no longer important in their 'strategy' is Bush's answer to Diane Sawyer's persistent question about his statements of certitude about Hussein's WMD as the main reason to go to war. "What's the difference?"

The inference is that in Bush's mind there is no difference in his accountability between saying there are WMD and there not being any.

But to limit that inference might be a mistake. The fact that Bush actually said it with such aplomb goes to a much deeper fact. He knows that it doesn't matter anymore. It matters to us, but not to him and his future. It doesn't matter that we are finding out that he lied and that soldiers are dying every day and that what he has done goes against all domestic and international laws, as well as all social morality and ethics. He has won already and the veneer of 'truthfullness' is becoming less and less necessary.

I want to be wrong about this. I want to ignore that sinking feeling, but it's getting harder every time I see him say one thing and do the opposite. When I look at him he looks very comfortable, secure, protected. He didn't look nearly as worried as he should when Diane Sawyer asked that question. And that's very unsettling. Actually, he looked irritated and even put out by her insistence. He even said he was allowing her to ask him the questions because he 'loved her anyway'. Was that a veiled threat? Not only to her, but to everyone who would dare press him in an interview?

I hope his present 'attitude' is just the result of an ego which has grown super inflated with his delusions of grandeur and of being 'God's chosen'. But the fact that his handlers are letting him out to be able to say what he thinks is very worrisome. I hope my suspicions are wrong.

Subj: Mad Cow

The Bush Ag. Dept. has tried to reassure the public by claiming (with little opportunity to investigate) that contaminated meat has not yet made it into the food supply.

I can’t be reassured, since the Bush EPA did the same thing in Sept. 2001 –they prematurely declared that it was safe for people to return to Ground Zero. And that was proved to be another Bush lie.

Credibility matters. Having lied to calm the public before, the Bush League now lacks the credibility it needs to reassure Americans in this latest public scare.

FWD: US Mad Cow Link Questioned in Creutzfeldt-Jakob Cases

I began studying/preparing to become a veterinarian in the late '60s and early '70s, at which time I read many articles discussing the spread/problem of anthrax and bse on American ranches, especially those in Texas. Through the years, other instances have come and gone, all buried. It was clear to me that, as with every other travesty, when word of a single case of bse was released in the mainstream, it would mean that there was an overwhelming problem to which we would slowly be introduced. That day arrived, last week. I fear for anyone who believes current propaganda [bse in America is "isolated" and not in the human food-chain]. And I fear for our animals, most of whom eat foods loaded with the remains of rendered carcasses. We believe we have already seen cats with "mad cow disease" and are bracing ourselves for a rough road ahead.

US Mad Cow Link Questioned in Creutzfeldt-Jakob Cases
by Jed Seltzer and Elinor Mills Abreu
December 27, 2003
Reuters

NEW YORK/SAN FRANCISCO - Family and friends of American victims of Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease, the fatal brain disorder sometimes linked to mad cow disease, on Friday questioned whether the wasting illness that killed their loved ones was actually due to eating contaminated U.S. beef.
