Subj: Ronald Reagan

Worshipers of Ronald Reagan are deliberately blinding themselves to the truth about his regime.

Special Prosecutor Walsh avers in his Iran-Contra report that Reagan was guilty of criminal acts, along with most of those in his administration. Had Reagan continued in office longer, he probably would have been impeached. It was the largesse of the Democrats that allowed him to escape prosecution.

George H. W. Bush was equally guilty, according to Walsh, even though Papa Bush pretended that he was out of the loop. Later revelations showed that not to be the case, and on the eve of his leaving office, he pardoned Weinberger and several others who could have nailed him as an Iran-Contra perpetrator.

There are many equally disgraceful occurrences and statements made by Reagan and his henchmen that could have been, and were, incriminating, such as charges against Ed Meese. Reagan presided over one of the most corrupt administrations we have ever had and something should be done to deprive these pathetic Reagan sycophants of their ability to lie and falsify and change things in order to given him undeserved credit.

I hope the idea of removing our beloved Roosevelt from the dime goes down in flames. I am encouraged to see that Mrs. Reagan has rejected the idea. History will eventually correct all of the false presentations of Reagan's career, and until that time people should know the truth.

Eleven people in Reagan's rule were indicted for criminal conduct in office. Most escaped jail because of pardons and plea bargains, and other judgements, but the facts remain -- Reagan was culpable and is not deserving of the profuse accolades he has received.

The only thing wrong with "The Reagans" is that it doesn't go far enough in pointing out the truth -- especially about the thousands on innocent dead peasants in Central America who had no agenda and were brutally murdered by the Contras, supported and supplied by American tax dollars or monies from illegal arms sales to Iran.

And don't forget the visit to Bitburg to honor Nazis who killed American soldiers in WWII, or the 241 Marines brutally killed while sleeping in their bunks in Beirut, or Reagan's insistence the ketchup be considered a vegetable for children's school lunches. Of course ketchup is not a meat but it certainly would not provide as much nourishment as a real vegetable dish.

Subj: Ed Garvey and Progressive Politics

Thanks for the great interview. As an Illinoisan, I have always looked to Wisconsin and Minnesota as places likely to provide true progressive leadership for the country; not so much in recent years, and hardly at all now with the death of Senator Wellstone. Mr. Garvey's key point that the Democrats must take a stand that distinguishes them as voices of the people's interest is right on, and unless Democrats throughout the country follow suit it is not just hyperbole to wonder if the party can survive. The people are not dumb, especially those the Democrats want to get to the polls, they will not vote for Republican Light, which means they won't vote at all unless they are offered a choice. Who can blame them?

Wondering if all on BuzzFlash read our Colonel Nathan Sassamon's comments on our plan in Iraq. Saw this in the New York Times. He says " With heavy dose of fear and violence and a lot of money, we can convince these people that we are here to help them." How insane is that?

Subj: Further to "Jet Jock George" Action Figure

Dear BuzzFlash,

I also caught QVC's hawking the action figure of Georgeboy's latest Walter Mitty-like incarnation as a flyboy. So yesterday afternoon (12/8), I called QVC, and after sitting patiently on hold for some time, spoke with the secretary of a Mr. Gregory, whom, if my superannuated brain was functioning correctly, is the CEO. In any event, I informed this young woman that since my first husband, a Marine Corps fighter pilot, was shot down over North Vietnam in '72, and nary a trace of him was ever found, I was offended beyond expression by Little Georgeboy's Top Gun-Wannabe, "Mission Accomplished" (sic) celebration aboard the Abe Lincoln...as another demonstration of both his legendary, Compassionately-Conservative Leadership Ability, and of My Tax Dollars At Work..

I further explained that this meticulously-choreographed snippet of cinematic brilliance, which no personal video library should be without, was a direct hit to the Ground Zero termination of my decency threshold precisely because, while my late husband was dying for his country, G.B. was suffering nothing more life-threatening than the predictable hangovers of regularly-scheduled keggers shared with fellow Fortunate Sons in the National Guard--which, of course, as everyone who was alive at the time knew full well, was the ultimate, devoutly-to-be-wished method of weaseling out of a war in which live ammunition was employed. I questioned whether, given these specifics of our illustrious commander-in-chief's Braveheart-caliber war record, he should indeed be regarded as a fitting role model for the children of America.

My point, fellow Bush-abhorers, is that to my surprise, my call was not brushed off as just another crank-yanker, get-a-life Gripe. QVC, it would seem, is one capitalistic enterprise which can ill afford the usual "public be damned" corporate stance. So I urge you, give them a call. Tell them you think that Bush as the new Pokemon, Ninja-Turtle, must-have Christmas toy is not only a shameless fraud, but sends the wrong message to innocent, blissfully ignorant, future voters. If you log onto their website, you'll see an 800 number prominently displayed. I assure you, everyone who lost a loved one in Vietnam will deeply appreciate your trouble.

Subj: Ralph's Deal Editorial

Hello Buzz,

In regards to your editorial on Ralph Nader, I think it is obvious a third party candidate could play into the hands of the Republicans. And yes, Green Party candidates should begin at entry level seats across the U.S. in order to build a ground swell of support for multiple party system. The problem is that die hard Dems can't get off their wounded butts and support anything the Greens do after the Gore debacle in 2000. We can all blame Ralph, Gore, the electoral college system and the actual thieves (read Republicans of today - the largest group of fascists the modern world has known) who got away with stealing the election but that does not help us now. What Greens need to see is a best effort approach by Democrats across the country for support of local candidates.

For example, in my California district, there is an outstanding individual running for State Assembly and trying to get Democrats to support Tom Hutchings (see www.votetom.org) is like pulling teeth - never mind that the Democrats have never had a successful or viable candidate for this seat in the twelve years I have lived in this district. This is what pisses us Greens off. You talk a big talk, but walk the same old way.

By the way, I was a staunch Democrat for 20+ years, supported many candidates financially and gave sweat equity to their campaigns, but when this lame bunch of Senators and Representatives walked into the U.S. Congress and gave Dubya & Company carte blanche approval for devastating and damaging legislation, I switched my registration to the Green Party. Serious support on legislation like the Patriot Act, supporting first strike policies such as in Iraq, environmental rollbacks, FCC changes to allow media expansion, an unbalanced and unfair support for Israel are just a few items that won only because Democrats feared backlash if they didn't support the administration's legislation. A day doesn't go by when I read the paper and get utterly sick to my stomach with the foreign and domestic policies of this country that have long-lasting repercussions not only for the young people in this country, but reach beyond our borders. And it is a two party system that has allowed for faceless and blameless corporations to dominate our government, our policies and our lives. This is not a democracy but a hypocrisy that discourages individual participation and social justice.

So while I agree that George W. Bush must be removed at all costs, let's be clear on the mess we have in our country in the first place - and Ralph or the Greens are not to be held responsible, but those so entrenched in their parties that they can't understand why things don't change - just get worse.

Sincerely,

Dawn Ortiz Legg

Subj: GOP Reps didn't even know who's portrait was on the dime!

God are they stupid!

"With all the House members in one place, an idea for legislation and time to kill, Rep. Mark Edward Souder (R-Ind.) spent many of those hours asking his colleagues to support a bill to put Ronald Reagan's face on the 10-cent coin. He gathered more than 80 cosponsors -- and learned that many of the lawmakers were not all that clear about who is on the dime now. (It is Franklin D. Roosevelt.)

"One member insisted to me the whole night that Roosevelt's not on the dime, it's Eisenhower," Souder said. "We went around looking for a dime to resolve it."

Washington Post

That's classic.

Subj: Cheney Runs the Show

Posted at Economists for Dean I had heard from a personal source some time back that economic policy ran through Cheney, this is essentially confirmed by today's Wall Street Journal which shows that virtually everything runs through Cheney.

Mr. Cheney's clout on national security, and his central role in the war on terrorism and Iraq, are well known. Far less understood is that he plays a similarly vital role on economic and domestic decisions. A look inside the administration's agenda of the last year shows Mr. Cheney was a central player in maneuvering on tax cuts, the new Medicare prescription-drug benefit and the national energy bill that is still pending. ...The fact that his role has been little discussed isn't an accident. In September, for instance, when the White House was trying to give some momentum to the big bill to provide prescription drugs for Medicare, Mr. Cheney joined the president in the Roosevelt Room as he goaded members of the House and Senate to come together. But when it came time to let the cameras in for a ritual photo-op, Mr. Cheney slipped out before reporters could catch a shot of him. Mr. Cheney meets nearly every Wednesday with the White House economic team in the dark, wood-paneled Ward Room in the White House mess, using one lunch with the group to launch a discussion of "dynamic scoring," the budget-estimating approach that assumes tax cuts produce new revenue by generating more economic activity. He helped sell the president on the idea of a dividend-tax cut in this year's big tax bill. On Medicare, he has helped split differences by promising rural senators that the White House would support higher funding for their regional hospitals as part of a legislation creating a new drug benefit. "He has a huge sandbox," says Ken Duberstein, Ronald Reagan's last chief of staff. ...As this year's big tax measure moved through Congress, Mr. Cheney played the role of shepherd. One day in midspring, Kevin Hassett, an economist at the conservative American Enterprise Institute, got a surprise call from the vice president's office -- when the Iraq war was still hot, he recalls -- asking for an analysis of an arcane aspect of the debate on the growth package. He pulled together a memo and e-mailed it over, "shocked" at the level of detail that was requested, he recalls. Those close to the vice president say the request was routine.

Between his penchant for secrecy and his Hobbesian worldview this probably explains some of the huge rift between the Bush veneer of civility, "I'm a uniter, not a divider", and the brass knuckle politics of the Administration. People buy the Bush folksy charm at election time and get Nixonian politics in return. This week's Newsweek also reveals that prewar intelligence from the Iraqi dissidents was being funneled directly to Cheney:

THE MEMO, obtained by NEWSWEEK, suggests that the INC last year was directly feeding intelligence reports about Iraqi weapons of mass destruction and purported ties to terrorism to one of Cheney's top foreign-policy aides. Cheney staffers later pushed INC info -- including defectors' claims about WMD and terror ties -- to bolster the case that Saddam's government posed a direct threat to America. But the CIA and other U.S. intelligence agencies have strongly questioned the reliability of defectors supplied by the INC.

Subj: funny, funny quote from Lieberman re: gore&dean

Hey BuzzFlash,

Y'all probably have seen this already but if not I thought you would laugh as much as I did when I read this article about Gore's endorsement of Dean. Lieberman said he was surprised at Gore's endorsement of Dean, and

"He added that it was now "less likely" that there would be a place for Mr Gore in a Lieberman administration."

I imagine Lieberman having a Rupert Pupkin-like fake oval office in his basement and not allowing a cardboard cutout of Gore into the room.

Subj: Your tax dollars at work

The next time W decides to go gallivanting around the globe for a re-election photo-op and to upstage other political leaders, think about this: it costs about $40,000 an hour to fly Air Force One. This cost does not include other aircraft that are escorting the pResident: So, if his Thanksgiving Day visit took about 22 hours, and he spent about 2 hours on the ground - well you do the math!

Wonder how many sets of protective gear this pork could supply for our troops?

Selective Service continues to invite interested citizens to volunteer for service on its local boards that would decide claims from men if a draft were reestablished. This invitation for board members has been ongoing over the past 23 years, although there has not been a military draft in over 30 years. There is NO connection between this ongoing, routine public outreach to compensate for natural board attrition and current international events. Both the President and the Secretary of Defense have stated on several occasions that a draft is not needed for the war on terrorism, including Iraq. People seeking further information about Selective Service's standby boards or application should consult "Fast Facts" on this site.

Subj: Questions

Is anyone still investigating 9/11?

Is anyone still investigating who leaked the CIA agent's name?

Does anyone remember that we haven't found bin Laden?

Does anyone remember that we haven't found Hussein?

Does anyone remember that we haven't found WMD in Iraq?

Does anyone remember that al Qaeda and Iraq were not connected?

Does anyone remember that Bush went AWOL?

Does anyone remember that Bush stole the election in 2000?

Why aren't we being relentless about keeping these issues in the spotlight? There is so much wrong with the Bush administration and we must keep it out in the open where people won't forget about it. There are still people who would vote for him who are completely oblivious to all the harm he is doing. So many brainwashed and brain dead people who love to be led by a ring in their noses and a cattle prod at the hind quarters. If Bush is the best we can put into the White House we are setting ourselves up for failure and deserve what we get.

Subj: Rush and Paul Simon

According to Dan Lynch, a middle-of-the-road talk show host in Albany, NY, Limbaugh today make some wisecracks about Paul Simon being hospitalized for heart trouble.

Limbaugh evidently wondered why a liberal with such a big heart for the downtrodden could possibly have a problem with his ticker.

If this is true, it may be enough to embarrass some non-Clear Channel stations to drop Limbaugh, especially in Illinois. That is, as long as his despicable remarks get some kind of coverage -- sites like BuzzFlash, then the SCLM playing catch-up as usual.

But time is of the essence. In a few weeks, no one will remember or care that the Pigboy slimed a former U.S. senator on his deathbed.

You know people who monitor Limbaugh; let's hit him hard on this.

Subj: Faulty Electronic Voting Machines

Counties are looking at electronic voting machines because of the Help America Vote Act, which came about because of the voting debacle in the 2000 presidential election.

The Act requires at least one electronic voting machine per polling place by January 2006.

Officials in Ohio were contacted and said they have found a number of problems with those machines. They found the failure rate was 84 out of 94 parameters tested. This is raising questions of why any kind of failure rate should be acceptable when the lever-action machines currently in use are successful.

It has been claimed the main problem with the touchscreen voting machines is that it must be calibrated as much as once a day. The touchscreens tend to drift, so when you touch them the vote may or may not be recorded.

It seems one of the major reasons the country is now being taken in the wrong direction may be with us for a long, long time.

Subject: Trial by Missile

Apparently the concrete, razor wire, and ID cards are not the only Ariel Sharon policy adopted by the Bush Administration (http://www.csmonitor.com/2003/1208/dailyUpdate.html).

The most egregious Israeli policy now in use by the Bushies is the "Trial by Missile" approach to dealing with "terrorists". This methodology is not unlike some of the tactics used to ferret out witches back in medieval times. You know, if someone floats during a prolonged dunking, or if they don't burn while tethered to a stake, then they must be a witch so thy must die as a result.

Trial by Missile also uses an ominous end result to arrive at a pre-determined supposition - that the individual must be up to no good because they may have associated themselves with known members of some opposition group. The rest is simple, get a "tip", rev up the jet engines, and fire a guided missile into the location where the already judged and condemned person may be present.

Many such attacks have been used against the hapless Palestinians. The outcome of Trial by Missile is quite predictable. If you are killed during the strike, then you must have been a suicide bomber or one of their supporters. If for some reason you escape the Hellfire hit, then apparently God and man knew that you were innocent of any such affiliations.

We first used this method when six men in a car were torched while riding across a Yemeni desert. One of them was an American. It was then attempted as an early solution to the Saddam will not turn over his oil fields and country to Bush and Blair dilemma. However, the latest use of Trial by Missile reflects how flawed this radical and illegal tactic actually is. Nine innocent Afghani children were recently killed when one of our Trial by Missile sentences was being carried out against a suspected Taliban sympathizer. Now it may be possible that these youngsters were future soldiers for Usama's army, and therefore the policy holds firm. On the other hand, since this was a military strike against a "known" target, it makes any innocent casualties "collateral damage". Either way you look at it, Trial by Missile is superb way of eliminating any present and future antagonists without recrimination.

Trial by Missile is a perfect solution for those who don't have the evidence or ability to make their case in a court of law. Reliable sources don't have to be all that reliable, boots don't have to be put on the ground, and as we have come to know, no explanations or apologies are necessary from the military. After all, aren't our national security and our very freedoms at stake here? And what of democracy, where would the planet be today without the ability of duly elected leaders to implement such long overdue policies?

At what point does it become acceptable for, say, a Kim Jong Il or a Ayatollah Ali Khamenei to use Trial by Missile on a certain group who continually threatens their perceived evil existence? With Trial by Missile and its uncanny ability to ferret out the gutless, there is no telling how it may be used when it becomes an acceptable world-wide practice.

This "get them before the act" policy must be stopped. It is the foundation of the Bush Doctrine, and like everything else that this administration concocts, it is not only severely flawed in theory and practice, it is clearly immoral. The thought police have taken over in the "War on Terror", and just like every other such past effort to deal with the unknown, it is the innocents that end up paying the ultimate price for crackpot thinking.

Subj: Poppa bush Calls The Kettle Black

Buzz,

Just came across this little gem and wanted to share with fellow buzzers.

When "American Taliban" John Walker Lindh was captured in November 2002, it was reported that he was from Marin County Ca. This prompted bush sr. to label him as some "misguided Marin County hot-tubber."

Jackie Kerwin who is editor of the Marin Independent Journal, took exception to this typical bush style insult. She urged readers to write letters. The letters poured in, leading newspapers, radio and TV new programs to spread it across the country.

bush attempted to back pedal the story and offered this lame (non)apology. He wrote to Kerwin,"Call off the dogs please. I will never again mention the words hot tub and Marin County in the same sentence. He then followed up with a phone call. He gets on the phone and says "hot tubs for sale" Kerwin said, and that pretty much set the tone for the rest of the conversation.

That's an apology? Sounds more like get off my back bitch. I guess she was supposed to be honored that a "bush" called her and just cave right in. After all, isn't that how the bush family is used to having things go?

This is amazing when you consider that jr. doesn't have one single success in his resume, and has been bailed out of every failure in his life by his daddy or someone tied to him. Poppa has fixed all of his business dealings, gotten him out of the military, fixed drunk driving and cocaine arrests and the Presidential election. What ever prompted Lindh to stupidly do what he did, his record pales in comparison to dubyah. You might think this would be an embarrassment to poppa but I guess not. Every one is just supposed to buy into jr.'s phony life story and love "bab's precious boy" as they do.

The bush family is a little like the Beverly Hillbillies. They aren't real smart, and have no class or grace. They just have LOTS OF MONEY!!! Except the Hillbillies are genuine nice people. The bush's are the Hillbillies from hell.

Re: On Andy Card's Linguistic & Logic Dysfunctionality

Ref: White House Criticizes Kerry's Profanity, Jennifer C. Kerr; 12/7 AP

Dear Buzz:

If Associated Press Writer Jennifer C. Kerr's quote is accurate, Andy Card has some problems with English and logic:

"Howard Dean is a good governor in Vermont who is no longer governor," said Card. "So he would not be my choice for president of the United States."

Any grade-school English teacher will immediately recognize the `present tense' (verb) error in the first sentence---and that correcting it makes the second clause of the sentence redundant. I think it's safe to assume that no other person has or will ever view ex-Governorship of Vermont as a reason for not choosing a presidential candidate.

Andy, if you're smoking something you ought to throw the rest of it away---and preferably where there's no danger of anyone else getting a hold of it!.

Subj: TRUE LIAR?: Did Schwarzenegger Lie on CNN?

Did the Governor of California lie when he said today on CNN Inside Politics with Judy Woodruff that <<I've been here for 35 years in this country. And I've never had any complaints filed against me, never any complaints made to me.>>? Was he just spinning the truth? In any case Woodruff didn't challenge him.

The LA Times reported October 7, 2003 in their story, Another Alleged Victim Comes Forward:

<<(Rhonda) Miller, said in her statement that she reported Schwarzenegger's behavior to the Screen Actors Guild.

"We did receive a call from Ms. Miller in March 2003 about alleged harassment incidents regarding Mr. Schwarzenegger and others in the early 1990s," said Pamm Fair, SAG deputy national executive director. "She did not pursue a formal claim; however, her call was logged in."

Allred said the statute of limitations had expired for legal action on the allegations. The attorney, who said she does not represent Miller, said Miller sought her out.

Allred said she was contacted after Miller had complained to SAG but before allegations of harassment against Schwarzenegger were first published Thursday in The Times. >>

According to a former SAG administrator there are other sexual harassment complaints that have been lodged with SAG against Schwarzenegger over the years.

EXCERPTJUDY WOODRUFF'S INSIDE POLITICS

Interview With Governor Schwarzenegger

Aired December 9, 2003 - 15:30 ET

WOODRUFF: All right. I want to ask you some more about that. But Governor, I also want to ask you about a story that is out there in the last few days, and that is the announcement by your own staff yesterday that you've decided not to pursue an independent investigation of these allegations by a number of women, as many as 16 women, that you either groped them or in some way sexually handled them.

Why is your office not going to pursue an investigation?

SCHWARZENEGGER: I think it's because the people have spoken. Their voices have been heard. They elected me to be governor. They sent me up here to do the job.

They sent me to Sacramento to straighten out the mess. And there's such enormous challenges ahead, as you were talking about, the budget crisis that we have, and major decisions have to be made in order to straighten out the mess, that, you know, that's what I'm here to do. And so that's why I'm concentrating on this right now.

WOODRUFF: And yet, you said before the election -- in fact, you told Tom Brokaw in an interview -- that all of the details would come out after the election. So do you feel you're breaking a promise?

SCHWARZENEGGER: No, it was -- I meant much more for me, that I wanted to look into it myself. And so that doesn't mean that I won't do that. But, I mean, the bottom line is right now, I'm focusing on this and there's no investigation.

WOODRUFF: How, then, do you think there will be closure on these? Because right now, these charges are just out there. How will this come to be closed as an issue? Or are these just going to be hanging out there, indefinitely, do you think?

SCHWARZENEGGER: Well, no. I mean, I consider those kind of pre- election things because, remember, I've been here for 35 years in this country. And I've never had any complaints filed against me, never any complaints made to me. So it was rather odd, I would say, that just a few days before the election that all of a sudden there was 16 that had, you know, complaints.

WOODRUFF: So it's just put aside?

SCHWARZENEGGER: There is no investigation.

WOODRUFF: All right. Governor, one other thing. This lawsuit that was filed in the last few days by Rhonda Miller, a woman who had named you as fondling her on two movie sets in the early 1990s, '91 and '94, now she is suing you, your campaign, saying that she was maligned because your campaign staff told the press that she was guilty of -- had been convicted of prostitution.

Is it possible that -- you staff apparently made a mistake and misidentification here. What do you think you can do about this?

SCHWARZENEGGER: I'm not familiar with the case, so I cannot comment on that at all.

WOODRUFF: Is it possible -- if it happened that your staff made an error here and identified, connected this Rhonda Miller with another Rhonda Miller, what would you do about that?

SCHWARZENEGGER: I have to find out more about it, because this is all news to me. I really don't know anything about that case.

WOODRUFF: So -- but if it did happen, would you act?

SCHWARZENEGGER: I will look into it, yes, absolutely.

Mendocracy. Government by lies, falsity and error.

At no other time than now would such a word be needed. BuzzFlash, does it buzz?

In re your editorial that Gore's early endorsement quells the voices of voters, my response is "Spoken like a true Republican".

If this publication never criticized the Republicans for anointing Bush (talk about shutting out voters!) then it is sheer hypocrisy to carp because a heavyweight in our party endorsed one of the nine candidates, and it it has no business - none - musing about the effect of those of us who respect Al Gore's opinions and listen to them with care.

Subj: House parties and city ordinances

Hi,

Would it be a coincidence that the reporting on the great house party idea and the passing of the ordinance requiring a permit to assemble in Oregon (and who knows where else) would be in the same mailbag? I feel another freedom slipping. What a great way for J Asscroft to keep tabs on all the opposition.

Of course any of the dems running would be a better president and I will vote for the candidate but it is really frustrating to live in a fear and hatred state and know that there's little chance your vote will count. Right now I am saying "Give 'em HELL Kerry".

Once again I would like to thank our president Al Gore for pushing through the senate the appropriations to start the internet. His actions will prove to save our country and maybe the world. Thank You Buzz for your large part in the follow through.

I always read with interest comments about and by Bill Thomas since I read that he was born in Wallace, ID. I looked him up on Al's internet to see if he could be the same person I knew in school before he left Wallace. It was but with one exception, the boy we knew was one of the nicest around not the arrogant and uncaring person I have since seen several times.

Subj: Turkey Anyone?

For well over a week now, the FOX (Foreign Owned eXtremist) Network has been bragging about how heroic it was for Bush to go to Iraq for Thanksgiving. I have just one question for FOX about this heroic World leader, Where was his parachute this time?

This can't be the same heroic Bush that just avoided millions of peaceful war protestors in an allied nation, Britain, just a week before Thanksgiving? And it certainly can't be the same fearless leader that has imposed Free Speech zones here in America to silence those who oppose him.

With the windows shuttered on Air Force One during the entire flight to Iraq, is FOX sure they didn't land in Guantanamo? That would explain the vanishing British Airways jet that might have been on its way to the British Virgin Islands or the Caymans!

Subj: WMD plot uncovered In East Texas

This story is dated Nov. 26. No national news outlet has picked it up.

(AP reported Krar's arrest in May of this year. Krar and Bruey pleaded guilty in the middle of November. That last development was mentioned in the Ft. Worth Star Telegram and the San Antonio Express-News, and in another AP story, all of them last month.)

Ready. Aim. Fire! OUCH!

Missed Opportunities, or Why Do We Keep Shooting Ourselves in the Foot?

In last night's (Dec.9) Democratic debate at the University of New Hampshire, this was Ted Koppel's opening shot:

"Things are going very well for him (Dean) in the polls. Things are going very well for him in terms of raising money.

So I would like all of you up here, including you, Governor Dean, to raise your hand if you believe that Governor Dean can beat George W. Bush."

Only Howard Dean's hand went up.

A minute or two later Koppel explained "I'm not really asking you -- at least, I wasn't then -- whether you think you're the better candidate. I was simply asking you whether you thought that Howard Dean could beat George W. Bush. Not a one of you raised his or her hand."

I have read comments elsewhere that Koppel asked a "bad" question.

No, he asked a good question. The candidates gave a bad answer.

Every hand on that stage should have gone up.

Let me repeat that.

EVERY HAND UP.

And then the answers should have been, "Ted, every person on this stage can beat George Bush. When a search on the Google website for the phrase "miserable failure" results in hundreds of hits that come up "George W. Bush" and his administration, anybody can beat Bush. The question before us tonight is 'What then?' After you have defeated Bush in the election next November, how do you plan to rescue the country from the last four disastrous years of malfeasance and misadministration?"

I would amend Ben Franklin's maxim. We must all hang together and not try to hang each other, separately. I will still vote ABB, Anybody But Bush, but I am not encouraged by last night's performance.

Subj: Operation Enduring Vote Winter Break Call to Action for HR 2239

Hi,

Just wanted to let those of you around the country know about the call to action up on verifiedvoting.org which asks everyone to contact their congressperson or senator over the holidays in support of HR 2239 (and now in support of its companion bill just introduced in the Senate by Sen. Bob Graham--http://graham.senate.gov/pr120903.html.)

What we're asking interested activists to do is to find out the recess schedule/office hours and public events of their Reps and Senators and to make sure that a contingent shows up at each event to express support for HR 2239 and Graham's Senate Bill and for the immediate passage of the two. This could be a very good meetup activity for the election reform meetups on Weds., Dec. 10 (Meetup.com-search for election reform).

Best,

Subj: Can you explain? I don't understand.

I'm confused........i heard on the news that countries that didn't back bush on the war, France, Canada, Germany or Russia will not be allowed in on any of the rebuilding contracts for Iraq. They said it was for security reasons. Didn't we just ask those countries for money and troops for Iraq? Why in the world would we want countries that are security risks to have troops in Iraq?

Subj: Don Imus PUTS HIS FOOT IN IT AGAIN

Hi BuzzFlash,

This morning at about 7:55AM CST Don Imus was commenting to Tom Freedman/NY Times that "that Horrid Gore and how he treated "our friend Joe Lieberman". .".when he was on the stage endorsing Howard Dean, his hair was hanging in his face and he LOOKED JUST LIKE HITLER"...Tom Freedman SAID NOTHING! BuzzFlash readers MUST CONTACT MSNBC and demand nothing less than DON IMUS LEAVE THE AIRWAVES NOW!!!

Please let me know what other sites I should make aware of this. I am counting on you to help me get this Crazy man off the air.

Subj: Nader

Dear Buzz,

I just cannot believe that the Nader for president movement is totally grassroots. The republicans were mad as **** about Perot's candidacy splitting the republican vote and handing the election to Clinton. They learned that lesson well, and I cannot but help believe that the republicans had their hand in Nader's run. In our local politics the republicans sent money and personnel to the green party to keep it alive and actually pressured greens to run. That almost split the democratic vote enough to give us a republican governor. Fortunately the republican candidate was so lousy he did not stand a chance. So why did the republicans spend money on the greens?? The republicans see support for Dean and other democratic candidates and they would naturally turn to the tactic of trying to split the democratic vote. That is also why we get so many urges to turn democrat against democrat.
