Subj: NyTimes interview with Babs the battle ax Hi... I'm surprised you linked to the Chicago Tribune article about Barbara Bush's comments rather than the more complete New York Times version. Specifically, two comments were left out of the Trib version ...One, her claim that "nobody said it would be easy" about the aftermath of the war. (YES THEY DID!!) and two: about how a president has to believe in God to send soldiers to their deaths. (If he thinks they're going to a better life, maybe it would be best to have an atheist president...) ...and then how she's not sorry that she said the Democratic hopefuls are a "sorry bunch"... At least none of them committed TREASON or funded Nazis. sks Subj: Burn Baby Burn Fires out of control. 800 homes destroyed. 13 killed. Not enough equipment or manpower. But we have 87 billion for Iraq. Thanks Mr. Bush. -Resident of Southern California. Subj: Show Respect. Fly the American Flag at half-mast. After reading "We need reminders of the Cost of War" by Luther Kieth of the Detroit News, which I linked to via BuzzFlash, I sent him the following e-mail which I want to share with my fellow BuzzFlash readers
Subj: Rumsfeld, McNamara, and Speer Rumsfeld's "leaked" memorandum is a chilling echo of Robert McNamara, Secretary of Defense during the Vietnam War. Note the words "benchmarks," "metrics," and "cost benefit ratio," and the remark, "Is our current situation such that 'the harder we work, the behinder we get'?" -- eerily akin to McNamara, who likewise treated war and the Pentagon as technical and conceptual problems, and who, defending a war as unwinnable as it was indefensible, resorted to shallow soul searching into "the meaning of it all". One of McNamara's solutions to the "lack of metrics" was the notorious "body count" -- the number of Vietnamese killed each day -- which backfired when the American public, waking up, hurled the term in contempt at the Pentagon and the media. Retired in the 1980s, McNamara wrote a memoir ostensibly admitting he'd been wrong about Vietnam. Reviewers praised it lavishly for his great moral honesty, but all he did was fall back on the "we made tragic errors" theme, basic to US propaganda: noble intention, flawed analysis. McNamara is now said to have increasingly "opposed" the Vietnam war even as the USA was expanding it. This is bizarre. He was the Secretary of Defense, from 1961 to 1968, who directed the war's launching and build-up. It was his war. The claim that he "opposed" it is a blatant lie. But his book has apparently succeeding in supplanting the truth with this fiction -- much like the memoir of Albert Speer, Hitler's minister of production, whose slave-labor camps manufactured German arms, and who later, convicted at Nuremberg, wrote a book emphasizing his "technical" approach, converting his war crimes into neutral management tasks which alas involved regrettable aspects he had no control over or direct knowledge of. McNamara and Rumsfeld are in the exact mold of Speer -- cold, brutal, arrogant thugs hiding behind facades of "rational cost management" and "difficult moral choices". It won't be surprising if Rumsfeld someday publishes a memoir of the Speer-McNamara type: anguished second thoughts of the idealistic but humbled technician-bureaucrat. This week's "leaked" memorandum, which Rumsfeld could hardly have promoted better if he'd read it on TV, is a step toward that memoir. Sigh! Our noble mission, for all our brilliant planning, seems bafflingly unable to fulfill our hopes! Rumsfeld is all but plagiarizing Nazi Albert Speer. - A BuzzFlash Reader KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK! Hey BuzzFlash, So the dittoheads are spamming you now. Well, I guess the right must feel a bit threatened by you. A job well done BuzzFlash. Pat yourselves on the back. They should be threatened. http://www.niagarafallsreporter.com/editorial129.html It's interesting that you say you would recommend Ivins, Conason, etc. (above link). I read an interview with a solider who had just returned from Iraq. At one point, the interviewer noted that this soldier seemed very intellectual. The soldier then told him that he reads, Noam Chomsky, Conason, Palast and believe it or not, Michael Moore plus others which I can't remember and can't locate the article. He was a pretty high up officer in the military and said he would read pages from Michael Moore's books to his soldiers at nighttime. Obviously, the interview was anonymous. So don't think it's a far fetched idea to send them some of these books. Although I'm sure the powers that be would confiscate them. Imagine Rummy or Wolfowitz touring the barracks and seeing "Hey Dude, Where's My Country?". Barbara in NYC Subj: BuzzFlash readers of Kentucky, please vote on Nov. 4...it's a dead heat and every vote will count. Dear Buzz, I hope you don't mind my using your forum to send a message to Kentucky voters, but I would like to ask readers of your great site which are also Kentucky voters to please get out to vote on Nov. 4, and take as many people with you as you can. From the polls, this is going to be a very close race, and every single vote is crucial. I would also ask that each voter reading this to give their support to Ben Chandler, Democratic candidate for Ky. Governor. Here's a link to an editorial in Owensboro, Ky.'s Messenger-Inquirer which sums it up nicely. Each Ky. BuzzFlash reader should read it and pass it along to other potential voters. 'Endorsement: Chandler's ideas set him apart' http://chandlerowen2003.com/news/clips.php?ClipID=53 Also, here's a list of links to other Ky. Newspapers who endorse chandler and also some other groups endorsing him. Thanks in advance should you post this on your site and allow your viewers to learn about Ben Chandler, democratic candidate for Governor of Kentucky. Best, Joe * * *
Subj: One of your best... Was the contributor who had those Bush quotes "we'll find Usama" "we'll find Saddam" "My white house is REALLL big, I'm not sure we'll find the Plame leaker" I loved it. Here he goes again... Joshua Subj: great takedown of O'Reilly Dear Friends at BuzzFlash, Bob Garfield at NPR's show ON THE MEDIA did a great sign-off piece regarding O'Reilly's recent hissy fit on Terry Gross' show. Here's the link; scroll down for an audio link: http://www.wnyc.org/onthemedia/ Thanks, and keep up the great work! Sincerely, Bill Corbett Subj: New Bush Doll Promotes Freedom of Choice Dear Buzz: Saw a new George Bush doll on the shelves at Kaybee Toys this weekend. If you push one button, you can hear Bush's "funny sayings". If you push the second button, you can hear his "inspirational sayings." What was interesting was what was written on the side of the box. Something to the effect that (1) You have the choice to push either Button 1 or Button 2; (see? in America you have free choice!) and (2) "Even though you can position my (the doll's) hands, it does not mean that I am a puppet." I about cracked up laughing. It appears some entities do not take kindly to people criticizing the first Bush aviator doll, so they rapidly came up with a newer, kinder Bush doll that allows you to choose which of his messages you want to hear: Bush funny or Bush spiritual (note: the choice is not between Bush and someone else, it's Bush or nothing). But the witty attempt to counter public perception that Bush is a puppet, from the aisles of a toy store, I think is a first. The extent some people will go through to push these propagandistic messages! Suddenly it didn't seem so funny anymore. A BuzzFlash Reader BuzzFlash Wrote: I cannot help wondering if General Boykin's remarks and the subsequent statement by President Bush, to the effect that Boykin should retain his position, had anything to do with these attacks. Morgaine Subj: O'Reilly's tantrums Despite being on a major cable news network and exhorting influence over millions of sheep daily, Bill O'Reilly can't stop whining about NPR. He's like the schoolyard bully who thinks everyone else is picking on him. Vishal [BuzzFlash Note: O'Reilly is pathetic.] Subj: Letter from New Zealand - "Shaken But Not Hurt" Dear BuzzFlash, So Paul Wolfowitz is "Shaken But Not Hurt" or should that be "Shocked and Awed!" Before I continue may I say that I wish no harm on anyone, but welcome to the real world Paul. Of course Mr Wolfowitz will enjoy the luxury of returning to the comfort and security of the US, but he has now had a taste of what the Iraqi people and the Iraqi based US Military have had to endure since Bush and Co. launched their politically driven phony war. Of course the news of the three most recent bombings is now being reported, so I am wondering if this will encourage Mr Wolfowitz to do the right thing and volunteer to stay on in Iraq for the long haul, maybe he can offer his services to the Red Cross. If you were a betting person, what would you think the odds might be? D.M.Reid (NZ) We went to a state fair yesterday to work at the Clark booth. One of the Dean people told us that while the booth was unmonitored, someone from the GOP booth came over and stole our materials and voting registration forms. The Dean guy took a picture of it and is going to send it to the Democratic Party to ask them to call the GOP and tell them what a bunch of a---holes they are. GOP stops at nothing. We thank the Dean camp for supporting us. We hope for a combined ticket to kick Bush back to Texas forever. A BuzzFlash Reader What ever happened to the blown cover of the CIA agent? Has anyone been hung? Are they still searching for the culprit? I bet it was bin Ladin! They can't seem to find him anywhere? Your Patriot Subj: THE MEDIA, STUPID It was the economy stupid. Now it's the media stupid and only the media. Time is running out. Despite all the incredulous things we are learning about the Bush administration, some criminal and most bordering on the criminal, history has shown he will do one positive thing, no matter how insignificant or contrived and the media will immediately cow-tow to him. They will continue to do their best to cover up all the lies and corruption. It is a no brainer the media protects the Bush administration even though it is made up of corrupt people and liars intent on personal gain regardless of the consequences to the United States. When a Democrat does anything, be it good or bad, whether it be fact or innuendo, the Right Wing controlled media will exploit it again and again and again. Whitewater is the classic example. It was shoved down our throats to the point when Clinton finally made one stupid blunder affecting only his own family, it was like he had already committed hundreds of high crimes and misdemeanors. This, despite the fact he and Hillary were found innocent of all other charges. Bill Clinton was then shown hugging Monica so many times, for so long, you would think they were attached at the hip. Al Gore and the Buddhist Temple is another classic. Video of him at the Buddhist temple was repeated so many times, the fifty thousand dollar donation was made to appear as 50 million dollars. Haley Barbour got caught taking millions from the Chinese for the GOP campaign and that story faded faster than his dealings with Swiss banks and the tobacco industry. It played out very much like the jaded past of George W., who was found guilty in land deals and went AWOL during the Vietnam War, to mention just a few of his under-reported crimes. Thanks again to a very one-sided media. By the way, Haley Barbour is now running for Governor of Mississippi and he has an enormous campaign budget, surprise, surprise. Again, 'IT IS THE MEDIA STUPID' and time IS running out. The Democrats have to stop talking about acquiring a national station, devoted to the Democratic and Liberal point of view and just do it. It is essential to the future of our country. Nothing is more important than getting the truth out now. If this current, fraudulently selected administration gets four more years, the consequences will be catastrophic and next to impossible to correct. They already have pillaged most of the monies they were so determined to get. Now it is just the quest for power and by controlling the media they are winning with their constant barrage of lies and venomous attacks on liberals. TIME IS RUNNING OUT AND MOST CERTAINLY, 'IT IS WHO CONTROLS THE MEDIA, STUPID'!!!!!!!! Mel Spiegel, from Jupiter Subj: So Cal Fires Has our imperial president said anything that the feds are going to do to help Californians with the fire devastation that has occurred? A BuzzFlash reader Subj: Exposing the Aluminum Tubes Lies by Bush Blair and Howard Hello, In Australia last night (Monday night 27. 10.03) there was on a show called Four Corners, broadcast on the national public television network ABC (Australian Broadcasting Commission) a show concerning the core evidence that was used to link Iraq with Nuclear Weapons programs. The site of the show.[LINK] DIRECT link to the story. [LINK] The show is investigative journalism at its best, and last night it was revealed that not only did top experts in the field discount the use of the tubes as nuclear grade, but they knew that it was likely to be for Italian designed rockets. The program also went into when the experts were consulted, when the leaders, or various departments were notified, including Colin Powell and Alistair Campbell (Blair's former spin doctor) along with former CIA intelligence agents stating how there was only one member of staff who thought that the tubes were for nuclear use. Please let as many people know about this program. I hope this will lead to more accountability. Concerned Australian Citizen. Dear BuzzFlash, Nothing has really stirred me of late to do much of anything other than sit here slackjawed amidst the absurdity of our national disaster. But you gotta read this, my friends - this is courtesy of CNN. One Mohammed al-Rahaief, the Iraqi "rescuer" of Jessica Lynch, visited her hometown. He was transported there on the magic carpet of "The Friends of Mohammed al-Rahaief." Trouble was, Jessica wasn't in, but through her lawyer she let it be known that she "thanked Mohammed." It's truly beyond telling. Goebbels couldn't have tried harder. http://www.cnn.com/2003/US/South/10/27/iraqi.lynch.ap/index.html John Woods Subj: Donald Rumsfeld's Leaked Memo: When did the meeting take place? Dear BuzzFlash: When exactly did the big meeting take place that was referred to in the now famous "leaked" Rumsfeld Memo? That memo from Secretary Rumsfeld was dated October 16, 2003 which was a Thursday. The subject of the memo was "The War on Global Terrorism." Recipients were advised to "Please be prepared to discuss this at our meeting on Saturday or Monday." The names on the distribution list are: Paul Wolfowitz, Douglas Feith and Generals Richard Myers and Peter Pace. On Saturday, October 18, 2003, Secretary Rumsfeld spoke at the 15th Anniversary of the Jesse Helms Center ceremony. Where the ceremony was held is not listed nor was it listed on the Jesse Helms Center website. According to the transcript of his speech, Mr. Rumsfeld said that ""I should add that I was with our Senator's mutual friend, Vice President Dick Cheney this afternoon for some time just before coming here and he wanted to express his respect for you and his good wishes on your birthday as well." http://www.defenselink.mil/transcripts/2003/tr20031018-secdef0802.html I think that we all are interested in what the Vice-President and Secretary of Defense discussed on that Saturday. On that same Saturday, Paul Wolfowitz hosted the Pentagon's first annual "First Responders Appreciation Day": http://www.defenselink.mil/news/Oct2003/n10182003_200310183.html Mr. Wolfowitz was traveling on Monday, October 20, 2003: http://www.defenselink.mil/today/ On Saturday, October 18, 2003, General Myers was in Kansas and gave a speech to ROTC candidates and trustees at the University of Kansas: http://www.defenselink.mil/news/Oct2003/n10182003_200310181.html The items to be discussed in the memo were not insignificant: Have we fashioned the right mix of rewards, amnesty, protection and confidence in the US? Does DoD need to think through new ways to organize, train, equip and focus to deal with the global war on terror? Are the changes we have and are making too modest and incremental? My impression is that we have not yet made truly bold moves, although we have made many sensible, logical moves in the right direction, but are they enough? Are we capturing, killing or deterring and dissuading more terrorists every day than the madrassas and the radical clerics are recruiting, training and deploying against us? Does the US need to fashion a broad, integrated plan to stop the next generation of terrorists? Do we need a new organization? How do we stop those who are financing the radical madrassa schools? Is our current situation such that "the harder we work, the behinder we get"? Did everyone on the list drop what they were doing on Friday, October 17, 2003 to gather answers to these heady questions? If so, when did they get together to discuss them? I am somewhat skeptical that all of these questions could be discussed in depth with only one day's preparation. While I admittedly about curious about the meeting, I am more interested in the DoD's press release on Monday, October 20, 2003, announcing the award of more than $1 billion in new defense contracts. http://www.defenselink.mil/contracts/2003/ct20031020.html I read that Secretary Rumsfeld sends out hundreds of memos that are called "rummygrams" and "snowflakes" to the White House and the State Department. If my boss sent out hundreds of memos, I'd think he or she was nuts. No one has that many good ideas that are worth spending the time to write about, let alone waste the time of employees that have to respond to these rummygrams and snowflakes. Someone should evaluate the secretary's use of his time and resources. That someone should be the president of the United States. Sincerely, Jamie Peppard Subj: Bill Moyers Interview This is the second time I've read a piece on your web site and they were both EXCELLENT!! I'm an activist for Wesley Clark and I will forward your latest interview with Mr. Moyers to all my contacts. And this is how the web works. This is how we take back democracy. Remember as a kid when we'd line up and whispers something into the ear of the kid standing next to you and then that kid was supposed to whisper the same thing that he or she heard into the ear of the kid standing next to him or her and so on and so one. Then the fun came when you got to hear what the final whisper was. Well, it doesn't work that way anymore. One person reads and then exponentially the word is spread exactly as it was heard to all that want to know. And the Internet, as is; is creating a huge appetite for information. And better yet it IS empowering. And every e-mail I send I feel a little more in control of the world around me. The proof is here and now. The grass-roots organizations for all our major political candidates will show to be the most important element and powerful tool in this next presidential election. So take heart BuzzFlash and Mr. Moyers, the future is good, and those that are using this tool will have more power to shape America's future politics than you think. And it's OK if the couch potatoes are letting us speak for them, that just makes my opinion count even more. But hark! Some of those couch potatoes are turning to their computers more and more BECAUSE of the mediocrity of the mass media. So the future, I believe, isn't going to be as bleak as Mr. Moyers fears. He is absolutely right in his observations but I'm a lot more optimistic about the power in the Internet for social change. It's happening NOW. And it's as soft as the tapping of your keypad but louder than any mass rally in the park. Cindy White, Oxnard, CA Subj: Reality Check Yesterday when I turned on the news there was a one star general being interviewed in front of a burning Red Cross building in Baghdad. Thirty plus people had been killed and hundreds more wounded in multiple attacks in the previous few hours before this interview. The general was assuring the interviewer that things were improving in Baghdad and the streets were much safer, that security had improved. Then later Jerry Bremer and Bush sat in the oval office and told us that the people who were attacking in Baghdad hated freedom. Huh? An unelected American president who took leadership through a coup d'etat that was seen throughout the world insists on invading Iraq in spite of world wide outrage and UN disapproval to replace Saddam Hussein with Bremer and Halliburton, occupy the country, strip the Iraqis of dignity, calls them freedom-haters. Is there something wrong with this picture? Linda Deak Subj: Boykin vs Hindus Aloha BuzzFlash Thought I'd pass this along. I checked on Google just to make sure it wasn't a joke.
