Dear BuzzFlash,

RE: The Texas Air National Guard George W Bush Action Figure 8/15

Once again, eBay has removed an auction because of the anti-George W. Bush nature of the item.

But, as you'll see if you look at eBay auctions 3040295793, 2945391189, 3543580849 & 3237160792 (just a few of the many such offerings) there's no shortage of things to amuse the Clinton-haters with extra money to indulge their neuroses.

Buzz,

Does anyone find it peculiar that the 'former' energy secretary, Bill Richardson, is all over the news and Spencer Abramson is no where to be found?

SUPERB! Great instant analysis of the political background of the power grid failure.

I only hope the DNC and the Democratic Presidential candidates attack Bush as quickly and effectively as you did.

Subj: About the Davis Recall

BuzzFlash,

Lt. Governor Bustamante has it in his power to take over office should Davis be recalled. I sent him email requesting that he does just that.

The republicans have stolen my vote for governor by getting this recall (I won't even get into what they did to my vote in 2000), I do NOT want them to steal my other vote for Lt Governor. I voted for Bustamante to take over for Davis should anything happen to him. The republicans happened to him, now the second in command should step up to the plate.

If this does get posted to your site, I would like to urge Californians to let Bustamante know we voted for him to be second in command, if the recall passes it is his job to take over as governor. Please don't let them steal this state as they stole the nation in 2000.

Subj: A word about eBay

Hi,

Just read with great interest the letter in the Mailbag regarding the "empty box representing george II" being removed by eBay. The letter contained this line: "There have been articles about eBay's eagerness to please the government, turning over anyone's shopping and browsing records." This statement is absolutely true and, in reality, the situation is far worse than one might imagine.

Forgive my ignorance of proper terms regarding websites and their creators, but here are some details regarding eBay's being "in-bedded" with the bushites: About two months ago, I was listening to a local computer-help show on Pacifica Radio. The hosts had done some digging upon reading articles and hearing rumors about eBay’s releasing information to the government. It turns out that the *patriots* who started/own eBay were extremely anxious to aid and abet the In-justice Department in its alleged hunt for terroristic threats. How anxious? They informed ashcroft & co. that all they needed to do to obtain records was to make a request. So, not only is Big Brother watching but Little Brother is also along for the ride.

In other words: no warrants, no legal channels, nothing in writing, none of that “Constitutional rights”mumbo jumbo to slow things down. All the fine folks at the In-justice Department need do is, whenever the spirit moves them, give their good buddies at eBay a call and any records of *suspicious* activities will be at their fingertips. As the hosts of the computer show pointed out, turning these records over on a simple request is bad enough but who sets the standards as far as what or who constitutes a "threat"?

Without a doubt, eBay has turned over the records concerning whoever put the *george II in-action figure* up for bid--and whoever placed a bid.

Subj: Liber-trees

Buzz,

An analogy that occurred to me the other day:

Bush's forest management policy can be summed up as "We must cut down all of the trees, to protect them from being burned."

Bush's security policy can be summed up as "We must take away your civil liberties, in order to protect your freedoms."

Interesting parallel, isn't it?

Subj: The bunch behind Arnold

Dear Buzz,

Well. Well. Well. Wouldn't you know...out of the woodwork to assist and guide Arnold, the hulk, but Warren Buffet and George Shultz, a Bechtel longtimer. More of the same, the Iraqi planners, money grubbers.

The political cartoonists ought to have a great time with this one....I can "see" a "little" hulk with the giants, money bulging out of all pockets standing behind him....Shultz, Buffet, money bulging out of their pockets. What a great puppet they've got...

Your website gets better all the time...

Subj: Re: John KGB Ashcroft Joke Analysis

BuzzFlash,

I believe that your subtitle, John "KGB" Ashcroft, says it all. When I first saw this joke, it was simply attributed as a variation on an old cold war Soviet joke that went around and around for years and years over there with the names changing with whomever was in charge. Maybe someone from there could verify that.

Subj: Re: Can You Believe This? A John Ashcroft Joke

Hey BuzzFlash:

Thanks for passing along the joke. The only problem is that it is not a joke, it is a horror story. It's what is now happening in this country on a limited basis but if Ashcroft and Bush have their way, it will be happening much more often. When I read the last two lines of the second child's questions, it hit me like a ton of bricks. It actually struck fear in me.

Tell it like it is--it is not a joke. It is scary.

It can't happen in America--can it?

Subj: "Forgive Me. I voted for George Bush": A reply to Mr. Moore

Dear Mr. Moore:

I am a life long Democrat who volunteered for the campaigns of both Bill Clinton(twice), Hillary Clinton, and numerous other Democratic candidates over the last 10-15 years. On behalf of only myself, I offer you forgiveness and I extend a hand in friendship. There will be no 'I told you so's' here. Until March I was a moderate, make no waves kind of Democrat. I was living 4 hours outside of NYC when September 11th occurred, and has taken me a very long time to come to terms with my fear and deep anger over what was done to people I knew that day. I even cautiously supported much of what has gone on in this country over the two years since.

No longer. As I have educated myself over the policies of this administration, both international and national, I have come to believe that our worst fears have been realized. I am very frightened for this country and it's future. I believe that these times require all of us who have the ability to think and to reason to stand up and speak out against what is happening. The more we speak out and the more we involve everyone we know, the more impossible it will be for the powers that are in control to ignore us.

I have a simple proposal for you, not as any kind of condition for forgiveness, but as an additional way for you to make your feelings known: speak out and write about what you know. You are a respected man in many circles and people will take you seriously. It might also give those who are afraid to speak out the ability to rise above their fears and stand up for what they believe in. We all need to come together in this task of saving our country.

Thank you for your apology. It reinforces my belief that if people learn the facts they will stand up for what is truly good and right and American: in the real sense of what those words mean.

Subj: Connection?

Northeastern States win verdict against Ohio utility and a week later the lights go out? Could be, but they radically miscalculated the effect if they did and the person or persons who did it would be facing serious jail time. Then again maybe not under this Justice Department, but watch to see if this administration uses this as an excuse to change the Clean Air Act to benefit these utilities which lost this court case and the other utilities with court cases pending.

Subj: Revelations of the Blackout: Terrorism as a Protection Racket

Did anybody notice? It just slipped in with all of the news of the Great Power Failure of 2003.

While much of the Northeast and Eastern Canada was struggling to bring the power back on line, the Bush Administration declared that the Blackout was not caused by terrorists. Although no one could even pinpoint the cause of the blackout or even the approximate region of the initial failure, they could assert definitively that terrorism was not involved. How could they know?

They seem to have a pretty secure handle on who does terror in the US these days. What are the implications of this for the terrorism of Oklahoma City, the World Trade Center, the Pentagon? And of the future?

If there is a terrorist attack this year or next, would it be fair to say that the Bush Administration is pretty much in charge of that racket these days? Running a protection racket from the White House would normally at least get somebody impeached.

It helps to have the media, the Congress, and the Supreme Court in your pocket.

Subj: Rob Lowe Joins Schwarzenegger

BuzzFlash,

You mention that things are getting out of hand when Rob Lowe, who plays a White House staffer on TV, joins the Schwarzenegger campaign. Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Lowe once appear in a video with one or more young ladies, possibly under-aged, and didn't he get into serious hot water over same? So we see that he is well-qualified to work on Arnold's campaign, as both are prone to sexual improprieties. Perhaps Schwarzenegger can exhume Jack the Ripper and hire him as a campaign consultant as well. I always thought the Republicans were the party of family values, but what did I know.

Subj: Another Oddity

I sent you this back on 8/3 because the NBC WH correspondent seemed to me to be "on to something". Maybe she picked up on something brewing. The blackout certainly has killed all negative stories on Bush and his administration. Those of us that consider it possible that they let 9-11 happen (how else to explain their sitting idle while we were under attack) have no problem looking at this blackout as suspiciously serendipitous.

You carry this syndicated show on Sundays, or at least your local affiliate Channel 25 Jacksonville Fl does.

Two weeks ago Matthews polled his panel for their predictions of things to watch for. The NBC White House correspondent said something along the line of "look for something really big around the middle of August".

She seemed to have picked up on something. Well, something big did happen "around the middle of August".

Will Matthews be commenting on this?

Subj: Who is advocating for U.S. service members?

Dear BuzzFlash:

You have been exposing stories for weeks, neigh, even months about this administration's proposed budget cuts for U.S. military service members combat pay and family separation benefits, as well as cuts to budgets for veterans' health benefits. I see that the mainstream press is just now catching-up with you. I greatly appreciate your efforts to support our troops here and overseas and expose the "lip service" of the Bush administration toward the dedicated young men and women who serve in our armed forces and who are repeatedly being placed in harm's way.

I have a question. Why in the hell haven't any of our democratic political candidates sounded the alarm on this issue? I can't think of a more safe, mainstream, and universally supported issue than supporting our troops. Are we really that timid and meek that we can't draw the line in the sand with this administration and declare Bush a lying, hypocritical, service-avoiding weasel when it comes to this one particular issue?

Thanks again for all your hard work BuzzFlash. You are a light in the darkness.

Subj: Ashcroft Joke

You were wondering who wrote the Ashcroft joke--the one that ends "Where's Bobby?"

The answer is lost in legend. I can remember the same formula from the Cold War: Leonid Brezhnev being asked "Where's Comrade Polyatkin?"

It may even be older than that.

Buzz,

If any of the cable networks wanted to be truly "Fair and Balanced" you would see people like Paul Krugman, Eric Alterman, Maureen Dowd and Nancy Skinner as hosts or co-host. CNBC would replace Lawrence Kudlow's yelping lap-dog with Paul Krugman.

Buzz,

Now, about the dying GIs: Starvation and dehydration caused by Rumsfeld-Halliburton lack of support for the army are the causes. But, as you know, the military mail service is contracted out to a private firm also, and the mail going to and from the GIs is controlled by the contractor. Now, do you believe the military personnel will be allowed to vote in 2004? Special attention will be devoted to the soldiers who complain, or whose families complain, about their inhumane treatment. Why would Rumsfeld want a complainer to have the right to vote?

Subj: Bush - All hat, no cattle

Every time I see G.W. Bush in his bootcut jeans and faux rodeo belt buckle, I am reminded of a song I once heard:

You can tell by our outfits that we are both cowboys.
If you get an outfit, you can be a cowboy, too."

Dear BuzzFlash,

An article by Steven R. Weisman with Felicity Barringer on page one of the New York Times of August 14, 2003, reports:

"The administration is not willing to confront going to the Security Council and saying, 'We really need to make Iraq an international operation,'" said an administration official. "You can make a case that it would be better to do that, but right now the situation in Iraq is not that dire."

Query: Will the (unnamed) administration official be thrown out of his job?

Fired for statements that endanger the lives of men and women in the American occupation. Now that we are after the events of August 15-16, are we to believe that 'preparedness' is interpreted as waiting until the situation has to become 'dire?' What is implied in the quoted statement? What messages are being sent?

And to whom?

To an Iraqi who cares about his country, is happy to be rid of Saddam's terror, and looks forward to the establishment of an independent and representative government in Iraq: government in which elected officials are elected by popular majorities in honest elections. Make things more 'dire' and you will have a better chance for independence!

To an unreconstructed Baathist adherent: The government of the US is so fearful of intervention in Iraq by people over whom it does not have complete control that it is not even ". . .willing to confront going to the Security Council . . ., to consider exposing its views and behaviors to legitimate scrutiny. Kill more American soldiers, covertly disrupt reconstruction, and you will have a better chance of getting what you want.

To American soldiers in the field: We have just told the Iraqis that you are bigger and stronger. That you need no help other than what your government sends. Prove yourselves! Stand up to the challenge of being hated!

Subj: Bush Ranch

I enjoyed the comments by H. Russell in reference to the Bush "Ranch." I live in San Antonio and the buzz amongst horse people here is that Bush is deathly afraid of horses. He cannot recreate the Reagan horseman legend unless the horse and the rider are both chemically calmed.

He, in essence, privatized the management of the Bush ranch back to the original owner. If you can't manage, get a manager.

He makes a big deal about "cuttin' cedar". Well, real Texans know that no multimillionaire goes out and "cuts" cedar with the chain saw (replete with goggles). You either use "guest workers" or, if the infestation is significant, you hook a log chain between two caterpillars and clear it all in an afternoon.

This brings us to what we in a small agricultural college in the Oklahoma Panhandle used to call "Drugstore Cowboys", "all hat and no cattle", $500 boots with no manure, no callouses -- no cowboys -- and the callouses on the buttocks during the time Mssr. Cowboy was "supposed" to be in Alabama in the National Guard do not count.

We (to address the Connecticut Yankee rancher in King Karl's Kourt expression) in the west believe that there ain't a horse that cain't be rode or a cowboy that cain't be throwed".

This portends no good news for Bush II in the even the "red" states. If you cain't ride, you cain't rodeo. There is a big difference between a bulldogger that leaps from a galloping steed to wrest the horns of an uncooperative bovine to the ground in an effort that requires guts, timing, risk and that is not synonymous with the situational "ethics" of a bullshitter (pardon my French) that arrived with pedigree, boots, millions of unearned assets (favors yes, earned assets no), a purchased personae and wants to play macho with a nose that has never been "broke" (bled from excess but not broken).

A costume other than on Halloween in Texas is believed somewhat of a farce. "You is what you is". That is why not only veterans, but thoughtful observers were moved to comment on the "perilous landing on the Abraham Lincoln" (within view of the shore) as a classic example of you "can dress'em up, but you can't take them anywhere".

The problem as defined in "Texan" is that Bush has entered the area where it could be said, in reference to the Rovian nomenclature (and the repeated exaggerations that led our Nation to pour a Billion bucks a month down the Iraqi outhouse) that would motivate common sense observers along the Colorado River (and hopefully the Beltway) to honestly remark that "he (Bush) is such a liar that he has to get someone else to call his dog."

The greatest quote on the Bush family was that Senior was "born on third base and thought he hit a triple"--Ann Richards. This applies to Junior and Jeb Boy as well. I do not choose to question the athleticism of a former cheerleader from Yale, but can you imagine Shrub in full gallop chasing a steer and risking his tush for a belt buckle? Tommy Lee Jones who played football for Harvard, yes, but Shrub?

If indeed King George is afraid of horses, he has not a worry in the world unless the terrorists come on calvary on something other than a Saudi prince's entry into the Kentucky Derby. Bloodline does not dictate "heart" and those who have never truly won the race fear the real match.

Let's hear the bugle to call the start and let pedigree race head to head with performance.

"And they're off...........and "Integrity" is sticking to rail, "CIA Disclosure "is moving to the Inside, "Congressional Backbone" is coming back, "Bush's Poodle "is coming up lame, "Former Soldiers "is on the move, "Special Interests "is responding to the whip, Big Money has the rail, California entry MuscleHead is challenging from the press box ...but Honesty is ahead by a length and a half as we make the far turn...

unless the race is called on a another multi-colored security alert.

R. Talley, San Antonio, Texas

Dear BuzzFlash:

Thank you so much for your terrific website. I love it. At this point, I am so well-read on politics, I amaze my friends and family. I'm a democrat but occasionally the past I have voted republican (for shame). But, ever since Bill Clinton's presidency was decimated by the republicans and Newt Gingrich, I have turned farther and farther to the left. And, I refuse to vote for any republicans. I found your site soon after the 2000 presidential election and it has helped me so much in understanding what happened and moving on from it. And, I've learned so much more in the past three years from reading your site many times a week.

Why don't you guys make a documentary and get something really going here. Here's just one idea for you, Energy Deregulation and the boobs that made it happen! I read the other day the compilation of facts and quotes from the republicans over the years, you posted as a BuzzFlash editorial. I'm sure you guys could do it. You're the best!!!

Subj: If it's mysterious, you gotta think Bush

Dear Buzz,

I agree with your headline on the investigation into the massive electricity outages. You noted that it was "interesting.... very interesting" that Bush immediately said they were weren't due to a terrorist attack, when it was too soon to have proof for that pronouncement. When the outages happened, I remembered a piece of writing from several months ago in which the writer said if the administration wanted to impose martial law, the best way would be to shut down the electricity grids.

It's disgusting to have to wonder if every calamity that happens in this country was created intentionally by the Bush administration for its own ends, but unfortunately, its behavior over the past two years leaves little choice. If this was a created event, it accomplished several things:

1. Notice how the increasing drumbeat of criticisms of Bush over the Iraq lies was immediately stilled.

2. Major network news anchor got to say earnestly into the camera, "Bush has already spoken to the American people, reassuring them that this was not the result of a terrorist attack." The magic words--"President Bush reassures the people."

3. The administration gets the benefit of increased fears of terrorism, but doesn't get blamed for another terrorist attack on our soil with a year still to go before the election.

4. It's been proven how extraordinarily quickly--in a matter of 9 SECONDS--most of the country could be forced to a complete halt.

5. If next fall, just prior to the elections, an even larger outage were to occur, requiring martial law, and the administration could claim it WAS terrorism, there's a precedent for the vulnerability of the electricity grids.

6. Somewhere in that mix, there are Bush's words about the need to upgrade the grids, and the implications of that for his energy company support base.

I don't like spreading even more worries. But if's there's any truth at all in this theory, discussing it (widely) is our best protection (as BuzzFlash knows!).

Dear BuzzFlash,

The following reader comment spurs me to add another observation. Have you ever noticed that the TV reporters use some dilapidated old barn as the backdrop to their on-camera reports? In fact I've never seen on TV what the actual living quarters on the Bush ranch look like. I'm betting that Bush forces the reporters to use the dilapidated barn as the backdrop. What do you think?

Subj: Thanks for keeping us informed.

Us just North of you, that is. :) I just had to smile at the irony of the editorial "Can't Stand the Heat?" mocking the Europeans for their difficulties in dealing with temperatures a steady 25F above normal.

Because shortly thereafter followed the power outage, and from what I saw there was a great deal of complaining about the heat once all those high-tech cooling gadgets were rendered useless within the space of three minutes, Mr Washington Post Editorial Writer would have been witness to Americans struggling with the same difficulties with heat as the Europeans, and it was only 80F or so wasn't it? Not up to 100F which is what they have had to contend with?

On the darker side, it did not seem to compute that more Parisians had died in the heat than in the 9/11 tragedy. The lack of compassion to that aspect was, frankly, sinister.

As well, someone should buy the guy an atlas! Nearly all of Europe lies north of 44 degrees, roughly on a latitude with Toronto and Minneapolis. Texas lies roughly on a latitude with the Northern Sahara. Is he suggesting that Europeans used to 75F and a hot day of 80F should gear up all their buildings for a design temperature which exceeds the norm by 25F? Nah, he was just joining in the popular sport of Europe bashing. Fun for all the family, and let's face it the Europeans can give back as good as they get. :)

Subj: What's Really Scary

Okay, I give. I'm at the absolute peak of vigilance. I cannot look at medium to dark-skinned men between the ages of 20 and 35 without checking them for nefarious behavior. Are they holding unusually shaped packages? Taking pictures of landmarks? Speaking in a foreign tongue? Looking around...suspiciously?

I get up and check the Alert Color - is yellow still okay or should I put more duct tape away? I monitor the terror alerts during the day. Oddly enough, nearly every day I'm told we are likely to be the target of a terrorist attack (see LINK). Is this something new? Have our troops in Gitmo squeezed some choice new nugget out of those "terrorists" who've been incommunicado for a year and have finally broken? Has the FBI or Ashcroft's team discovered the threads of some hellish plot by tracing the overdue book fines of Muslim men of questionable immigration status? How about backward messages in the children's songs of Yusuf Islam (formerly Cat Stevens)?

I never thought I'd say this, but I'm getting to the point where I'd rather just assume something is going to happen and let the media inform us when there's a lull or a serious attempt foiled. This administration's constant need to keep the population emotionally riled about "politically safe" topics has become exhausting. Instead of talking about the increasing death, undersupply, and sabotage in Iraq or the rapidly deteriorating situation in Afghanistan, we talk about possible attacks with no specifics. Instead of continuing to press the administration on the campaign of lies leading up through the Iraqi War, the misuse of Homeland Security in Texas, and seemingly very suspicious use of private contractors such as divisions of Halliburton and MCI, we are all very well informed by the US media on the details of the Peterson and Bryant cases and the king of all media spotlight whores, the California Recall.

Where will it all end? If this administration hasn't moved you to action, I can't think what would. FBI agents in your closets? Religion-based state aid? Four more Antonin Scalia-style justices? Careful, you could get your wish.

Subj: The term "wounded"

Dear Buzz,

I was thinking, the term "wounded" seems to be a rather mild word for what is really happening to our soldiers; that is, those who survive but are injured when ambushed. It's more than just a wound when soldiers are permanently blinded or deafened, their hands or feet or arms or legs are blown off, shrapnel is embedded deep within their skull, they get burned over half of their body, they become quadriplegics or paraplegics, bullets rip their internal organs apart, or they suffer head injuries which cause them to be mentally incapacitated for the rest of their life.

So, how about using the term "maimed" instead? To be maimed indicates a severity of damage which the word "wounded" does not convey. We have almost all been wounded in our lives, to varying degrees. Only the very unfortunate have been maimed. Americans need to associate a mental image which is commensurate with the damage being done to our soldiers' bodies and minds.

Say, has anyone seen Bush lately making the rounds of Veterans Hospitals to personally thank our soldiers?

I didn't think so.

Regards,

Elaine

Subj: Bush's Power Failure

So happy to be able to get BuzzFlash on line once again.

Dear BuzzFlash,

Like so many of your readers, things are getting back to vertical here in Dearborn. To say we are angry is to make a great understatement. When your electric, phone and water go off, it is a very big deal. (of course, we had D batteries on hand and the radio took Cs.) The more we hear about this massive blackout, the more we need to hold a lot of feet to the fire.

Have just managed to read one of your Aug. 15 headlines. Add to the list of guilty the name of Spencer Abraham. He was the loser here in Michigan, remember? But Bush put him in as Energy pooh bah. On TV last night Spencer was quite serious about something that had needed to be done but congress went against it. The guy didn't bother to say that it was a republican congress that voted it down. There is so much A-- saving going on. The word 'impeach' keeps coming to mind.

A great disservice has been done to a great number of people. I recall when we sat in the car on the 14th, to listen to the radio, word was that the White House had 'no comment'. Not even so much as a 'gee, we are sorry and we will get on it right away...and...oh...by the way, this is not a terrorist attack.'

We walked to the intersection near us to see how things were going without the traffic light. It looked like Dodge-em Cars. We passed two neighbors who have a US Marine Corps Flag hanging out in front of their home. They used to have a big American flag next to it, but that flag has disappeared and a very small flag with a metal US Marine Corps medallion on it is in the ground next to their front step. We said our hellos, and I said that maybe this was Ashcroft's doing. I thought our neighbors were going to fall out of their chairs they laughed so hard. Our neighbors live four blocks away, and we don't know their names, but we were most happy to have the laughter.

If DeLay wants to lay the blame on the eight years prior to Bush's appointment, so be it. That is some of the A-- covering. The truth has to come out. In order to help foster that, each time I get mail from the DNC, I write on the form that I will donate when they start speaking up, and when they stop sniping at the Democrat candidates.

Subj: Janklow's accident

Some think Janklow ran the stop sign. And according to this story he was known for his fast driving. I am not surprised, Janklow makes his own rules. I am from South Dakota and not everyone thinks he is a terrific guy.

Subj: o'reilly v. franken

in his august 18th new york daily news opinion piece regarding al franken, bill o'reilly's own words underscore precisely why mr. franken's book is titled "lies and the lying liars who tell them" and why mr. o'reilly's picture belongs on the cover.

mr. o'reilly states in his piece that "we [fox] don't denigrate opposing points of view by launching gratuitous personal attacks." however, february 4th of this year, on the o'reilly factor, mr. o'reilly repeatedly yelled "shut up, shut up" and "you just shut your mouth" at guest, jeremy glick —who had lost his father in the wtc disaster —because mr o'reilly disagreed with mr. glick when he stated his father would have opposed the pending war with iraq.

i guess in mr. o'reilly's world, telling someone you disagree with to "shut up" constitutes a "fair and balanced" opinion.

Buzz - by 9 am the framing of this story had changed on the AP wire to show that the troops where concerned because of other attacks. Information about him being a family man had been removed and the story had been scrubbed to go along with the new slant.

Subj: Ohio Failure Didn't Cause Outage

Dear BuzzFlash,

Energy Sec. Spencer Abraham promised to move as quickly as possible to get answers... -- "It's going to take some time" Abraham said on NBC's "Meet The Press".

This is the SAME thing they are saying about the WMD's in Iraq.

In other words, "Until every body forgets about this, so that we can get on with reelecting BU$H."

PEACE!
