GOP Hypocrite of the Week: Larry Craig A BUZZFLASH EDITORIAL Listen to the GOPHOTW HERE. Welcome back to the BuzzFlash GOP Hypocrite of the Week. It's not often that a member of the NRA Board of Directors and a United States Senator shoots himself in the foot. After all, Senator Larry Craig of Idaho boasts being a member of the National Rifle Association "Winning Team" -- or after this week, more likely the NRA "Losing Team." Craig, who has served on the gun lobby's board since 1983, usually carries the ammo for the NRA in the senate. For this reason, he introduced a piece of legislation to give the gun industry immunity from being liable for causing death and injury. It's the kind of sweetheart law anyone would want. I mean, wouldn't you want to be legally immune from responsibility for your own behavior? But, a funny thing happened on the way to the shooting range, so to speak. After championing a gun industry "get out of court for free card" for years, Senator Craig told his gun guy supporters to vote against the bill on March 2nd when it finally came up for a vote. Are you confused yet? Well, you see, Craig, being the GOP point man for "white males packing heat," said that he was upset that a couple of minor gun control amendments got attached to the bill during the legislative process. So he told the NRA lackeys in Congress to disembowel their own proposal. BuzzFlash speculates that Craig wasn't acting on his own. He's a good loyal Republican foot soldier and isn't the kind of Bush minion to take such a rash action independently. So, it's pretty clear that Karl Rove was afraid of the whole gun control issue backfiring on Bush's 2004 campaign and sent the order down from on high to kill the legislation. You see, Karl must have been watching when John Kerry and John Edwards took time off from Super Tuesday to vote for the gun control measures. Kerry made an impassioned plea for extending an assault weapons ban that Bush said in 2000 he would support, but doesn't want to sign because it would get his NRA supporters all in a frothy tizzy. The NRA swallowed hard on this one, but Rove, we're sure, promised them the world in a second Bush administration if they would take a silver bullet in the gut this time. If the NRA is patient, and the Supreme Court installs Bush again, there's sure to be plenty of goodies to come for the gun loving folks. For sinking his own extremist pro-gun industry bill, Senator Larry Craig truly merits the honor of being acclaimed the BuzzFlash GOP hypocrite of the week. We just hope someone can help him pull the bullet out of his foot. Until next week, just remember our motto at BuzzFlash.com: So many Republican hypocrites, so little time. Catch up with you soon.
