Barbara's Daily BuzzFlash Minute A collection of insightful ruminations, reflections, and rants on the events of the day (with the exception of the weekend). Come visit each weekday to see what's pushing Barbara's buttons. April 18, 2006 * * * This quote from Carl Bernstein says it all! “There was understandable reluctance in the Congress to begin a serious investigation of the Nixon presidency. Then there came a time when it was unavoidable. That time in the Bush presidency has arrived.” * * * “DAVID GERGEN, FORMER PRESIDENTIAL ADVISER: I find the story that has emerged from the White House today absolutely extraordinary, even bizarre … Scott McClellan is quoted by 'The New York Times' ... to say that the president has given his new chief of staff wide latitude to not only shake up the White House staff, but to even choose new Cabinet members. The last time I looked, Josh Bolten was not President Bolten.” The Supreme Court appointed Bush president, and now that he’s made a mess of it, Bush has named a surrogate! How like George Bush---when the going gets tough, he who talks tough always runs! What was that little story about his service in the National Guard? Then there was the time he bailed out of Harken just in the nick of time, taking his money with him. And a final PS to sum it up--- “GERGEN: Tough -- and tough decisions for Josh Bolten. But, last -- well, I don't know. Maybe President Bolten will have some fresh ideas.” * * * “COOPER: … how seriously should they take this, these comments from the generals? GERGEN: Very seriously … it's rare. Again … we are in -- we're in new -- new -- new waters here. I cannot remember a time when so many generals at high levels during a war have come out against the defense secretary. So, it's very serious, Anderson. What I think we see is, the White House is effectively circling the wagons around the secretary.” Do you suppose the White House is protecting Rumsfeld, because Rumsfeld knows in which closet all the skeletons are buried? Besides,, if things continue the way they’re going Rumsfeld does make for a very convenient body to shoulder all the blame! * * * Let me get this straight---While Cheney was CEO, Halliburton circumvented the law by establishing an off-shore subsidiary, and “Halliburton ,… yes, it's made zillions doing business in countries that sponsor terrorism, including members of the 'axis of evil' … the company has gone out of its way to do business in three nations that the U.S. has accused of supporting terror: Iraq, Iran and Libya. These actions started as early as 1984; they appear to have continued during the period between 1995 and 2000, when Vice President Cheney headed the company … According to Mr. Waxman, a subsidiary called Halliburton Products and Services opened an office in Tehran, Iran, in February 2000, has done work on offshore drilling projects and has asserted, 'We are committed to position ourselves in a market that offers huge growth potential.'" Now, Cheney wants to nuke Iran, and then Halliburton can get no-bid contracts to go in and clean it up! * * * A rather long winded attempt by the Washington Post---Deborah Howell, Ombudsman to be exact---to cover up the fact that the Post has been courting a clandestine affair with George W. Bush, rather than reporting the truth for the past 5 years! Whatever prompted the Post’s reasoning, a whole lot of people are on to their tryst and all the intellectual double talk doesn’t do a thing to repair the damage George Bush has done to America! If safety and security, freedom and democracy the world over is truly a concern for the Post, they’ve traveled the wrong road and hitched their cart to the wrong person! * * * Lying has become a way of life for all Repuglicans, including Ken Mehlman! They wouldn’t tell the truth if it was served up on a silver platter! Lying their way out of a politically damaging situation is the norm for today’s Repuglican Party. Realizing we all have short attention spans and our long-term memory is sometimes clouded with day to day survival, it has become a question of how long can the Repuglicans get away with assuming we are all just plain stupid! * * * The saga of John Doolittle, R-Ca., could actually be a “how to” get elected to Congress and do a little to become a millionaire! * * * A few anonymous quotes that reminded me of the Repuglican Party: … Corrupt officials are usually close-mouthed and open-handed. …The wheels of politics never turn unless they are well-greased. …Money doesn’t grow on trees but a lot of people get it by grafting. …With corrupt officials, money is the loot of all evil. …Politics is full of sins of omission and commission, with the omission being ignored if the commission is high enough. * * * |
