Barbara's Daily BuzzFlash Minute A collection of insightful ruminations, reflections, and rants on the events of the day (with the exception of the weekend). Come visit each weekday to see what's pushing Barbara's buttons. April 12, 2006 * * * I am for securing the borders of the United States, but I am also for a workable amnesty for the undocumented immigrants who are already here. The way I see it, previously and continuing right on up to the present day, the executive branches and the legislative branches of our government chose to ignore the border situation by not providing the funding to secure our southern and northern borders. Also they did not require a thorough screening when it came to containers of goods and containers of human immigrants arriving in our ports. This lack of responsibility could be viewed as an open invitation to come on in! We all know it wasn’t being done for the good of the immigrants, but rather for corporate America seeking cheap labor and an indirect route to annihilate unions! These same corporations depended on government initiated benefits to subsidize lower wages in order to keep their corporate profit margin higher. The lobbyists and politicians in Washington made sure the invitations were signed, sealed, and delivered. Holding honest, hard working people responsible for what our lawmakers did and did not do hardly seems fair or very American for citizens and undocumented workers alike. And to those who believe our ancestors knocked on the door and came in the old fashioned way, legally, ask any American Indian today what they believe happened way back when! Our angst and argument should be with those who occupy the White House and the halls of the Capitol in Washington. Blame should be assigned to those who were truly responsible, our lawmakers. We should be insisting on a more secure border, and better working conditions for all who expect an honest day’s salary for an honest day's work. Putting a band-aid on the symptom does not cure the cause, and this virus was started and nurtured in Washington D.C. * * * Leaking to the press may be legal for George W. Bush, but it sure as hell ain’t moral or ethical! But, then this is Bush and it should come as no surprise that he is responsible for leaking to the press, because thus far we’ve seen nothing moral or ethical coming from him! It goes back to that business of “talking the talk” but certainly not “walking the walk”! This whole scandalous, unethical, immoral affair doesn’t say much for his “Christian” values! Hmm, “You can fool some of the people all the time,” but you can’t ever fool God! * * * How really safe and secure will it be in the Middle-East if a nuclear war breaks out? How viable would the environment be after exploding nuclear weapons? What effects would long-term radiation have on those who populate all the countries that make up the Middle-East? Keep in mind that devastating hurricanes are the result of natural phenomena occurring off the coast of West Africa, so what are the consequences of radiation fallout for the rest of the world when atmospheric conditions come into play after a nuclear explosion in the Middle-East? Somehow the use of “nuclear weapons” does not equal “protecting the safety and security of the American people.” George Bush’s bravado and bullying attitude and “shock and awe” have done nothing to eliminate the threat of nuclear weapons, but have reinforced nuclear proliferation throughout the world. * * * At least there’s one member of the White House Press Corps with enough backbone to ask the pertinent questions. Thank You to Helen Thomas! * * * The only thing wild in this speculative equation is the wild man who is about to nuke Iran! Since George Bush stole the presidency there’s a new cliché that’s come into popular speech, “Wild man walking,” and with his finger on the nuclear button, for God’s sake. The tone in Washington has changed, from politics to “crazy”! * * * Bush’s “Delusions of grandeur” can really get us into a whole heap of trouble! To see himself as brave and bold will most certainly spell Armageddon for those who are latently suicidal, and just plain dead for the rest of us! According to Sy Hersh’s article in The New Yorker magazine, "A government consultant with close ties to the civilian leadership in the Pentagon said that Bush was 'absolutely convinced that Iran is going to get the bomb' if it is not stopped. He said that the President believes that he must do 'what no Democrat or Republican, if elected in the future, would have the courage to do,' and 'that saving Iran is going to be his legacy.'" Saving Iran, by blowing them up? Brave? Bold? More like just plain downright crazy to me! * * * It really is a cold day in hell for Americans, when scientists and analysts have to insist on anonymity in order to keep their jobs when getting the truth out to the American people. What kind of leadership is it that manufactures reasons to go to war, covers it up, and then intimidates, with threats of losing their jobs, those who would tell us the truth? Rotten, that’s the kind we have in today’s Washington, D.C.! Little did this country know when George Bush said he intended to change the tone in Washington, he meant to make it worse! * * *
