Barbara's
Daily BuzzFlash Minute |

A collection of insightful ruminations, reflections, and rants on the events of the day (with the exception of the weekend). We'll collect a week's worth here and then archive them. Come visit each weekday to see what's pushing Barbara's buttons. February 20, 2004 George Bush is content to send our sons and daughters to fight and die in a war in Iraq, a war that he now says is about bringing democracy to Iraqis, yet spends his time fighting a personal war against our own democracy by restricting the rights of gay Americans. It is impossible to comprehend the value of opposing gay marriage, when giving gays the same rights as married heterosexuals harms no one and benefits so many. But, for Bush, the costs of his wars don't matter to him, whether it's discriminating against gay Americans or sending more than 500 American solders to their death in Iraq. * * * "Join the National Guard: Serve in your own backyard Get Free Info Here. No Obligation," said the ad I saw on Google search when inquiring about the National Guard! Amazing! I wonder how many National Guardsmen consider Iraq their "back yard"? I wonder who is protecting the United States, since the Guard has been sent abroad? It was one thing to send these troops abroad before 9-11, but now that terrorists have managed to breach the oceans, don't you think it would be wise to maintain a force here at home? Are we to depend on and put the "first responders" in the position of having to defend as well as respond to emergencies? Are the Firemen, Police, Paramedics, and EMT's to become the first line of defense? Thanks to Bush, these are questions that need answers. * * * Is Pakistan becoming the future Iraq? Are the same men who shook hands with Saddam Hussein, even while he was using Chemical weapons against his own people, now making nice with a nuclear-proliferating Pakistan? Seems to me that if WMD's were the real reason Bush went to Iraq, then he would do or say something about Abdul Kahn's selling nuclear secrets to North Korea and Iran. * * * When all is said and done, mainstream media is going to have to come to terms with the facts! They indeed supported George Bush and his war and, by doing so, legitimatized the Bush hype. They helped this administration instill the overwhelming public fear that was required to send our troops into war. Mainstream media is as guilty as George Bush for the needless death and destruction. They didn't do their job and they allowed their reporting to be an extension of Karl Roves Office of Disinformation! * * * February 19, 2004 This administration was either too stupid to analyze the intelligence or they shaped the intelligence to fit their preconceived plans for war! Simple logic tells us they are either incompetent or they committed a crime. Neither option is a benefit to the people of this country or the values we share. There is no valor in stupidity, no glory in the deaths of thousands of innocent Iraqi civilians, and no justice in sending more than 500 American soldiers to die in Iraq. * * * Where is all the Wall Street Journal's chest thumping patriotism now? Where is their backbone, their resolve, their sense of justice? Oh, that's right, the Journal supports G.W. Bush and both went AWOL from their responsibilities. It's a damn crime that the Journal deserted Mrs. Pearl, but isn't that just like the Bush Rabble Rousers -- all show and no action. * * * When the DOD requested George Bush's National Guard records, did they receive the microfiche copies? Hard copy records have a way of being filed in a trash can, especially if they contain embarrassing details about a man who plans to run for the presidency of the United States. Microfiche records might be a complete record of service or, in this case, non-service. A complete record could also prove if hard copies had been tampered with, which could involve criminal behavior, a somewhat more embarrassing issue than the truth buried in Bush's National Guard records! * * * February 18, 2004 It is mind boggling that this administration uses the deaths of Iraqi citizens caused by Saddam to justify the deaths of Iraqis and Americans caused by an unnecessary war. No WMD's, no imminent threat, no links to terrorism, just lies told to wage a preconceived war. Death and destruction cannot be justified by death and destruction. Pre-emptive war without legitimate reason is intolerable. No wonder the Bush Administration pulled out of the International Court -- they knew they could be accused of international crimes and, as usual, they wanted to save their asses! * * * If the Repuglicans weren't already in the gutter, then the Democrats would not have to fight with gutter politics. Political lies, sleaze, and defamation were invented by the GOP, because the CANNOT WIN ON THE ISSUES. Do the names Anne Coulter, Matt Drudge, Newt Gingrich, Ken Starr, and Lucianne Goldberg come to mind? Repuglicans support big business, the wealthy, and special interests, not the people of this country. They will find out the people will not tolerate GOP filth forever -- to extinguish the blaze, sometimes you have to "fight fire with fire." * * * The best gift this country could give the families of the victims of 9-11 is the truth! If we are angry and overwhelmed by the events of that horrible day in history, and if we are truly patriotic, then we should demand the answers to why it happened. We owe it to the families, we owe it to ourselves, and we owe it to the future safety and security of this nation. No matter who made mistakes, nor who is exposed, it is imperative that the Commission deliver a thorough and complete report, not some whitewash to protect the reputations of those who ignored the warnings and went on vacation! * * * February 17, 2004 The more the right-wing whackos attempt to explain Bush's National Guard record, the more one realizes it's time to face facts -- Poppy pulled some strings and called in favors to get his boy a plush seat, ahead of 500 other applicants, to "champagne" duty guarding the Texas coast. Poppy's boy got tired of Guard "duty," so he went rushing off to the help some Repuglican waging a campaign war in Alabama. Perhaps history does have a way of predicting the future -- they lost! * * * "Don't go there," Colin Powell vehemently stated to a United States Congressman. You don't suppose he was afraid that if one were to go there, then one would remember what he said in his 1995 book: "I am angry that so many of the sons of the powerful and well-placed managed to wangle slots in the Army Reserve and National Guard units... Of the many tragedies of Vietnam, this raw class discrimination strikes me as the most damaging to the ideal that all Americans are created equal and owe equal allegiance to their country." Hmm, I wonder? * * * February 16, 2004 For all those who choose to call Social Security an "entitlement program" -- I don't think so. Social Security is a return on an investment that I paid for, whether I want to or not (and I do so gladly). Social Security is my reward for investing in our country for all the years I work. I do not view it as a helping hand from anyone -- I work for it, I pay for it, and I expect it to be there, however much it is, when I need it! I am not cheating, I am not lying, I am not bilking the public to make a buck. I put in an honest day's labor (and then some) for an honest day's pay and I expect to collect that which I'm due! * * * Adding a twist to Ann Coulter's own words: "No one ever questioned George's patriotism, his performance as president is the issue, which should not come as a bolt out of the blue, in as much as he sat in a grade school classroom jeopardizing national safety and security ("OH, MY GOD! A HIJACKED PLANE IS HEADED FOR THE WHITE HOUSE!" "Sorry, I'm on my way to Nebraska. Please call back in eight or nine hours.") * * * And the chickenhawk chest thumpers wonder why they attack us? This is the reason saner people than this administration believe there's a better way to resolve dispute. | |||||
