Trent Lott Yearns for the Days of Segregation and Lynching

The Racist Council of Conservative Citizens Loves Their Trent Lott

A BUZZFLASH READER COMMENTARY

The Council of Conservative Citizens is touting Lott in flying color (white, with some red and blue thrown in).

http://www.cofcc.org/

Lott has been a frequent contributor to the CCC's Citizens Informer newsletter and has spoken before their racist groups. During the impeachment hearings, when Bob Barr's affiliation with the CCC amusingly came up as he was desperately trying to tarnish Clinton, I noticed that the CCC homepage had a link to Barr's congressional homepage. I e-mailed Barr, who was frantically denouncing the CCC to save his sorry political butt, and asked if he approved of the CCC's link to his government office. I also e-mailed the CCC, presenting myself as a military member asking for CCC membership information; did Sen. Lott and Congressman Barr support the CCC or not? Why were they being so wishy-washy?

The CCC wrote me back and said that Gordon Baum, CEO of the CCC, believed that unless members of Congress denied their organization three times, as Paul (sic) had denied Jesus, that Baum considered the congressmen still to be on board. Barr's office never got back with me, but within 24 hours, the CCC link to Barr's homepage had vanished.

The CCC has been sending me their material pro bono ever since. I suppose they're hoping I'll build them a new chapter from military recruits. The CCC had initially sent me their "best" back issues, which included articles by Lott, Charleton Heston, mentions of Kirk Fordice promoting their group, and photos of Bob Barr speaking at the CCC National Convention.

It should be interesting to see what other bold confessions come out of Lott's mouth (and others' of like-mind) on the coattails of Bush's "mandate." Will the republicans continue to dance around their racist beliefs, or have the November elections and the demise of our civil rights created an atmosphere in which closeted racists feel comfortable outing themselves?

Last week, for instance, the House quarreled passionately about how to put itself on record against racism. Republicans offered language that enveloped the universe of hatemongers but cited no culprits. Specificity, they argued, only made racism smaller. Most Democrats viewed that position as more strategy than heart, a ruse designed to shield Republicans who had been tarnished by their associations with the CCC.

BuzzFlash Note: Do you think BuzzFlash is exaggerating that when Trent Lott, last week, proclaimed that America would be better off if Strom Thurmond had been elected president in 1948 meant he was supporting a candidate who represented a pro-lynching and pro-segregation outlook? See:

Now, do you believe us?

Of Course, this all begs the question: Why aren't the Democrats following Lott's every move with protestors and why aren't they besieging the media with outrage over Lott's remarks? Is it just too clubby in the Senate?
