Sold Out For Presidential Ambitions
A
BUZZFLASH READER COMMENTARY
by Susan C. McIntosh
I
caught a few minutes of John Kerry on This Week. Maybe some of
you who saw the whole program can clarify his positions for me. He said
that the U. S. was losing its standing in the world because of Bush. Why
didn't he speak out before? He disagreed with the Iraq War Resolution.
Didn't he vote for it? I'm confused. He accused Al Gore of being political.
Was Kerry being political when he voted for the Iraq War Resolution so
that he could hit the campaign trail sooner? Some one, please, help me
to understand!
I'm
slow, but I eventually get it. After 2 years I've decided the reason why
not one Democratic senator sided with the Congressional Black Caucus in
Dec. 2000. If Kerry, Daschle, or Lieberman had stood with the caucus,
their future Presidential dreams might have been diminished. If Gore had
in some way been able to have his recount and obtained the office of President
-- the Presidential hopefuls would have had to wait another 8 years to
run for office. Daschle cut a deal with the GOP leadership to share power
in the Senate and got the other senators to go along. What did they do
with this shared power? They went along with Bush thinking that this would
benefit them politically. I have heard people say that Gore didn't fight
hard enough. He appealed to the Supreme Court for God's sake. But his
fellow democrats were on the airwaves talking about when it would be appropriate
for him to concede. I never felt that the higher ups of the democratic
party mounted much of an opposition against Bush. Let's face it. We voters
were sold out because of a few powerful persons with Presidential ambitions.
I
want to be a loyal democrat and see my party stand for something right
and true and moral. I hope that things change soon.
