Beware of the Rove "Inevitabilty" Con A BUZZFLASH READER COMMENTARY Dear Buzz: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A53394-2002Oct19.html The above article, "Republicans Planning for Full Control of Congress," illustrates the Rove Inevitability Con. If you read it carefully, you will see no credible evidence cited for the exuberance of Republicans, and no positive quotes about a Republican outcome, except of course from Republican spinsters. Perhaps they are doing this on their own, perhaps they are doing Rove's bidding. In fact, the polls show quite the opposite to be true--Democrats are up in almost all of them, and have been for most of the last few months. Most respectable pollsters have stated over and over that the race is too close to call and that the Senate will probably stay with the Democrats. Nevertheless, if you were a progressive person reading this and you were not thinking about the Rove Inevitability Con, would it make you demoralized? depressed? Like maybe it wasn't even worth voting? Remember the facts about Rove's prognostications. Remember how in 2000 Bush went crazy visiting California the last few weeks because he said he would win it and all the analysts were scratching their heads but nevertheless duly reporting the nonsense because they thought maybe Rove knew something they didn't? And how did Bush do in California? Remember in November of 2000, before all the votes were counted, when Rove confidently predicted that Bush would win the popular vote by from one million to four million votes? And all the media duly reported it, even though Gore remained ahead in the counting? And who won the popular vote? Remember that the moral of the story is morale. Stay positive! Vote!
