The
Denver Protest
A BuzzFlash Reader Commentary
by Sally McDonald
I
just returned from an Anti-War demonstration in Denver for Mr. Bush's
visit today. The organizers expected 50 to 100 participants and at least
2,000 showed up and there might have been more because people kept joining
us as we walked from the City and County Building to what's called the
16th Street Mall. That's a downtown mall (the Bush $1,000 a plate luncheon
was held there) about 10 to 12 blocks long with only shuttles and foot
traffic.
We covered the mall and the shuttles couldn't run. It was a very peaceful
demonstration. We had been warned that there would be demonstrators from
the "For the War" camp, and there were, about 25 of them, soon
to be drowned out. One photographer was there who said he had covered
all the anti-war demonstrations the last few weeks and this was the largest
one he had seen, and Colorado is a conservative state. Every college in
the state was bused in and represented. It was fantastic. Senator Allard
might have more of a political run than the Republicans thought.
