An Open Letter to George Bush
April 25, 2002
by Sally McDonald
The New York Times printed an article regarding your faith, entitled "Faith: The Central Theme of the Bush Presidency." It went on to state that your faith causes some "amen's" and "anxiety." If you truly are a man of "faith" and "belief" in God, I am sure you must be calling on Him now -- the Middle East in shambles, a questioning of this "never ending war," four men dead and eight injured in Canada from "friendly fire," a questionable domestic policy, a questionable foreign policy, and a host of allies rethinking being a friend of the United States. Yes, I expect you are calling upon your faith. I know I would be and I am calling upon prayer through all this mess.
I, too, am a person of faith and I really don't want to judge the sincerity of your belief in God. But, I do question whether you believe in God or the people who have told you about God. Do you believe in a God that serves only the people you think He should love. I am wondering what the motivations are of anyone who runs God up the same flag pole that they run their country's flag, because you see, when earth was formed, there weren't any boundaries.
I know what God means to me and I respect and value whatever He means to others. How can you or I or anyone who believes in a "personal" God run out there telling other people what constitutes God's love and blessing? How can we even judge what is a blessing from God? Is a blessing from God more money, more oil, more weapons of mass destruction, or more power? If those are blessings, then I have sorely misunderstood the Beatitudes.
I try not to feel this way Mr. Bush, but I struggle with revolution when you or this administration invokes the name of God while planning more war, with more innocent lives across the world lost to "friendly fire," dismissing and thereby justifying the death of God's children as collateral damage. Two wrongs, Mr. Bush, don't make a right.
Do you know what I hear every time you say the name of God? I hear "I have more money, more power, more oil and I am blessed, therefore I can do anything to anyone, because God loves me best." And I hear justification for destroying the environment, compassion for the rich, and derision for the less fortunate.
Dictatorships, fascism, wars, hatreds, have always been products of the earth. I don't pretend to know why, anymore than I know why people kill, or rape, or abuse, or take from others, or lie, or steal. But, I do know these things are not of God. I am sad for you if this is the God you follow, because you've missed the point. Worse, Mr. Bush, you are trying to force us all into that same rocky boat of greed, justification, and lies. You aren't the first, and you won't be the last, but you're the most recent. For all our sakes, don't do it.
By the way Mr. Bush, true faith doesn't need an audience of millions, it only needs an audience of One.
