EnronOwnsTheGop.com Tells BuzzFlash That It Won't Shut Down!

February 17, 2002

EXCLUSIVE FROM BUZZFLASH.COM

FOUNDER OF ENRONOWNSTHEGOP.COM VOWS TO BUZZFLASH THAT THE GRAND HYPOCRISY PARTY OF TEXAS WILL NOT SHUT DOWN THE TRUTH

Kelly Fero is a top Democratic strategist in Texas. As Director of Texas '02, he is helping lead a comprehensive communications campaign to get the Democratic message out to state voters.

Faced with a legal ultimatum from the Texas GOP claiming trademark infringement, (see: http://www.enronownsthegop.com
and http://www.newsbytes.com/news/02/174563.html), he vows to BuzzFlash.com that his site will not be silenced. After all, he argues, it is hard to distinguish Enron's goals from the goals of many Texas GOP office holders. One need only look to the White House to test the validity of Fero's allegation.

Fero created EnronOwnsTheGop.com with two objectives:

  • To persuade Republican candidates to send back their Enron cash to the ex-employees who need it now more than ever.
  • To inform voters about these candidates and their continuing conflicts-of-interest regarding Enron's influence on their past and perhaps future public policy decisions."

The following is Fero's statement to BuzzFlash.com in response to the Texas GOP legal threats.

THE TEXAS GRAND HYPOCRISY PARTY CAN'T SHUT DOWN
OUR ENRONOWNSTHEGOP.COM WEBSITE

By Kelly Fero
Founder of ENRONOWNSTHEGOP.COM
Exclusively for BuzzFlash.com

The clumsy attempt by the Republican Party of Texas to shut down a website (enronownsthegop.com) that highlights their top statewide candidates' extensive ties to Enron seems to stem from the same arrogance that fuels those candidates' refusal to return the campaign cash to the ex-employees who need it most.

A cease and desist letter sent by a Republican lawyer this week threatens to file suit if we do not immediately abandon our free speech rights and buckle under to their demand.

We are not surprised that the GOP fails to see the humor in this website. Their high-dollar links to Ken Lay and Enron are no laughing matter -- especially to the tens of thousands of employees who lost their jobs, investors who lost their nest eggs, and Texas taxpayers who lost nearly $70 million, and counting.

Such rank hypocrisy from a political party that routinely rails against plaintiff's lawyers and "frivolous" lawsuits has become, sadly, par for the course.

But the timing of their demand -- during a week when their own political pals in Washington, D.C. have tried to defeat the latest congressional effort at campaign finance reform on the grounds that limiting individual contributions undermines our... you guessed it, right to free speech -- is particularly noteworthy.

No one has disputed a single fact featured on EnronOwnsTheGop.com, and the site will stay up until the four statewide Republican candidates whose political operatives are trying to shut it down return their Enron cash to the ex-employees of the failed energy company.
