Scapegoating Immigrants

By A BuzzFlash Reader

We have just learned a very unpleasant truth about ourselves. We can’t seem to stick together or organize a movement against the leadership of George W. Bush large enough to hold him accountable for his policies and programs of illegally wiretapping, the mess in Iraq, or the outsourcing of our jobs even though every poll, every public comment, shows that we are quite willing to stick together and form a powerful group to prevent Mexican immigrants from crossing our borders to take jobs that we are assured we don’t want.

WHY?

Why are we focusing on our close neighbor Mexico when it is a well known fact that our high paying technical JOBS are immigrating to India and China? Why aren’t we as outraged against our government that allows this as we are outraged by the the immigrants crossing the Rio Grande to become the maids, gardeners, and fast food workers of Bush’s wealthy “base”?

Why can’t we unite to demonstrate against the War in Iraq in the same numbers as our citizens and immigrants, from our neighbor Mexico, who have united to demonstrate against our government’s treatment of illegal Mexican aliens ONLY?

Why can’t we fill the streets in protest against the loss of our professional and manufacturing jobs that once provided us with the highest standard of living in the world?

It is a question we should all be asking ourselves and we should not flinch from the answer. Why are we willing to allow “the decider” to invade another country based solely on “facts” that he had “fixed,” to condone torture of other human beings in OUR name, to spy upon us as if we are “the enemy,” to refuse to listen to our complaints and criticism and yet agree with his immigration policy that criminalizes Mexicans just searching for a better job?

WHY CAN’T WE HAVE AN IMPACT ON WHAT OUR ELECTED AND APPOINTED LEADERS DO? What have we done that gives them the idea that they no longer have to listen and respond to our wishes; to the Will of We the People?
