Oath of Office

A BUZZFLASH READER CONTRIBUTION
By Linda Wymore

Just in case it comes up in conversation ... Bush is claiming unilateral imperial powers under the guise that he is protecting us from bad people. But his oath of office doesn't ask him to protect US, it swears him to protect the CONSTITUTION.

"I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States." - US Constitution, Article II, Section 1

Bush doesn't have the power or ability to protect us from death - death by bad guys or any other death. If it was his job to protect us from death, we should expect him to sign Executive Orders banning tobacco use and sale, alcohol use and sale, and eating fatty foods. That's not his job.

His job is to protect THE CONSTITUTION ... and thus protect OUR RIGHTS.
