We Need Some Derision

A blogger I read on BuzzFlash some months back wrote that, had the Will Ferrell campaign ad run (Ferrell is Bush the cowboy afraid of horses and unable to identify ranching tools), Bush would've lost the election. I agree. The ad was hilarious, and the point of it is: you can't refute derision.

We on the left are always trying to debate. It's like pathetic weenies on the playground trying to tell the bully not to split infinitives when talking about our mamas. We debated the truth about Gore's invention of the internet, about Rather's use of memos with dubious authenticity, about Kerry's purple hearts. Where did it get us?

Forget manners. Forget debate. The announcement of Harriet Miers should have been met by derision and a healthy dose of condescension by every Senator with a D behind the name. (I don't even begin to understand what happened to Harry Reid, except that I expect his face to split open to reveal a tiny alien at the animatronic controls).

Go ahead Senators on the Judiciary Committee. It's Halloween, put on your Dick Cheney mask and practice in the mirror. You don't need to deal with facts, or ideals, or precedent -even, or especially- when they are all on your side. Just raise a lip and sneer, sneer, sneer.

Let's laugh out loud that Bush said he's looked and can find no better lawyer in the country than his own. Considering all the scrapes for which he's needed legal advice, this could be true. Point it out while looking down your nose. Joke that were Newt Gingrich president we'd have at least two divorce lawyers on the court. Ha Ha Ha.

The Miers confirmation hearings should be nothing more than a laff riot. For dems to take them seriously would be a disgrace to our democratic tradition, not the other way around.
