| Guernica in Iraq A BUZZFLASH READER CONTRIBUTION The picture below, of the painting "Guernica in Iraq," and Elaine's obituary were forwarded to us by her son Michael, who thought his mother would appreciate the sharing of her work with the BuzzFlash community. Elaine Schmitt Urbain passed away on October 17, 2004 after a long battle with diabetes. Elaine was born in 1925 in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin. She is survived by her two children, Michael of peekskill, ny and Catherine, of milford, ct. her grand daughter, Carina de Lemos, her sister, Elizabeth Jennerjahn, and her brothers, Conrad and Rupert Schmitt. An internationally known artist who exhibited in the U.S., France, and Spain and her art work was published in the Spanish magazine, Brises. Urbain was also a devoted advocate for social justice. Urbain’s art education started with her grandfather who founded the Conrad Schmitt Stained Glass Studios in 1885. she studied art at Black Mountain, an experimental arts college in North Carolina where her teachers included Josef Albers, Lyonel Feininger and Robert Motherwell. In 1982, the N.Y. State Legislature passed a resolution adopted in Assembly commending Urbain’s artistry for her exhibition “A Salute to the Tarrytowns, Their People, Their Places.” A longtime peace activist, Urbain traveled to Rome with the Women for Peace Pilgrimage in 1963 and drew Pope John XXIII and in 1971, attended the Paris Peace Conference . She also drew several portraits of leading peace activists including: Norman Thomas, Linus Pauling, Daniel Berrigan and Dorothy Day. In the 1990’s Urbain produced “Elaine Talks Back” a monthly show on continental cablevision in Westchester that combined art and political commentary. A memorial service for Elaine Urbain will be held at the Connecticut Audubon Society in Milford, CT. on Sunday, November 14th from 4-6pm.
