Nothing As It Seems….

For the last 48 hours, like most of you I suspect, I have been in a state of shock.

I have gone from great anger and disbelief, to being depressed, sad, and concerned about the country’s future.

How Could America Elect this man after all he’s done?
Do they have any idea what it means to privatize social security?
Do they have any idea what it means to ‘restructure’ the tax code?
Do they have any idea what health care costs will be like if four years?

The answer, I believe, is no. Americans did not elect George W. Bush for the agenda that he has set out. The Bush supporters rallied behind their man out of fear, we rallied behind Kerry out of hate for Bush. With the results in, we now know fear has won.

Fear of terrorism, fear of John Kerry, and fear of Gays.

By putting this in perspective; we realize things aren’t as bad as they seem.

Yes, things are not going the way we wished and Bush is bound screw up America even more.

Yes it is perplexing that Americans think Bush is doing a good job on the war on terror.

Yes it is sad that Americans think two people who love each other and want to marry can’t simply because of their sexual preference.

Yes it is depressing that the Republicans have a stronger majority in the house, senate, and soon the Supreme Court.

But we must look at the bright side….Americans support our ideals!

John Kerry won when it came to Health Care. John Kerry won when it came to the Economy. John Kerry won when it came to Education. John Kerry won when it came to Social Security. John Kerry won when it came to the environment. John Kerry won when it came to civil rights. John Kerry won when it came to Medicare.

Why is this important? Because Bush’s agenda goes against what Americans want. American’s don’t want to jeopardize social security. Americans don’t want to ‘restructure’ the tax code leaving them with a greater burden. Americans don’t want more pollution in the air and water. Americans don’t want more countries to occupy. Americans don’t want Homeland security to go unfunded.

American’s want what we want but voted for the other side out of fear. The significance of this is huge. It tells us exactly how we are going to Stop Bush in the next four years:

By talking with our fellow Americans about each issue as it is brought up in Washington. We must appeal to those at work, members of our family, our friends, our neighbors, and even strangers. Through a respectable dialogue, we can show people what is wrong with Bush’s agenda, issue by issue as it comes up in Washington, and why it will be best that they don’t support it.

We must do this not out of fear or hate, but out of the genuine concern each of us has for each human life. It is good and right to care for your fellow human being. It is instinctive to care for fellow human beings. This is where the discussion begins and the way we must appeal to those who disagree with us, don’t pay attention, are apathetic, are Republicans, Independents, Green, Libertarian, Buddhist, Christian, Jew, Muslim, Hindu Gay, Straight, Black, White, Red, Yellow, Young, old, male, female, and all the other identity markers I missed.

People care about people; it is our job to remind them.
