Bush's Visit to Kennebunkport

A BUZZFLASH READER CONTRIBUTION

About a dozen of us were on hand last friday to welcome Mr. Bush's motorcade as he arrived in town for his nephew's wedding. We're volunteers at the Kennebunkport Democrat's "unofficial" Kerry/Edwards campaign headquarters located in the heart of Dock Square.

"Democrats Stake Presence in Kennebunkport"

We were holding Kerry/Edwards campaign signs and wearing our "Kerrybunkport" T-shirts. There were supposed to be more of us there, but Bush arrived 1/2 an hour early (after all, he was going to a party!). The REALLY cool thing was that Reuters did a story that was picked up all around the world.

"Bush's Heart-Throb Nephew Weds Lawyer"

Included was this paragraph, seen all around the world:

"The street leading up to the expansive Bush compound was blocked off while onlookers and a few protesters gathered. Some in town wore T-shirts that said "Kerrybunkport," playing on the town's name and the president's Democratic challenger for the White House, Sen. John Kerry who is from nearby Massachusetts."

The Washington Post's Mike Allen did a story on Bush's sunday morning visit to mass:

"Rendering Unto God; At St. Ann's in Maine, Luke 12 and Bush 43"

The last paragraph concludes:

"It's not just in church that it's getting harder for the president to keep a low profile during his annual Kennebunkport visit. A pair of demonstrators near Walker Point wore red and black signs saying, "Expose the 9/11 Coverup." Several welcoming signs, including "We thank you, Mr. President," greeted Bush in the Dock Square area. The town's Democratic headquarters retaliated with a "Kennebunkport for Kerry Edwards" banner. Inside, workers sold "Kerrybunkport" T-shirts."

A handful of us were ready on sunday with our signs and t-shirts to wave bubye as Dubya rode off into the sunset, but he managed to sneak out of town. The coward.

P.S. Business is booming at our Kerry/Edwards headquarters. With visitors arriving from all across the globe, "Kerrybunkport" t-shirts have been flying off the shelves.
