The World According to Wolfowitz, Part 2

A BUZZFLASH READER CONTRIBUTION

Visit here for Part 1.

As Deputy Defense Secretary, Wolfie maintains he has no idea what goes on in American prisons in Iraq:

So he is either incompetent or a liar. Hard to decide which option is more palatable. We should assume, however, that both are true.

Wolfie had a rare opportunity to demonstrate both his incompentence and a psychopathic lack of conscience during the Senate Armed Services Committee hearings yesterday.

When asked whether putting a hood on a prisoner for 72 straight hours can be considered inhumane, Wolfie had no answer. He had to be prompted several times to acknowledge the question, and when he finally responded, he mumbled something along the lines of "I wouldn't really know how to answer this question."

He wouldn't know... Well, of course he wouldn't. The lack of empathy and imagination when it comes to understanding other people's experiences are hallmarks of psychopathy. Wolfie fits right in with this administration, which as a whole reeks of serious psychopathic disturbances, from Dubya down.

The senator who did the questioning (I missed his name) got impatient and helped Wolfie formulate a more concrete answer by saying, more or less, that a normal, decent person would consider hooding someone for 72 hours inhumane. Would Wolfie agree? He did --reluctantly. (But it's hard to blame him -- remember, the poor chap has no point of reference when it comes to thought processes of a normal and decent person.)

This illuminating exchange was broadcast on NPR.

Wolfie also -- again very reluctantly and after prodding -- acknowledged that the Abu Ghraib abuses **seem** to be in violation of Geneva Conventions. One cannot be sure whether he really understands what he is saying -- after all, that's the same guy who insisted last year that Iraqi prisoners receive "extremely good" care in hands of American soldiers. Apparently, his grasp of reality is very poor, bordering on delusional (small wonde -- this is a co-author of the PNAC).
