Dear Buzz,
I read a column in my newspaper this morning about the grief, anger, disbelief,
and ultimate sorrow of a local grandmother mourning the loss of a grandson's
life. Campbell, CA resident Dorothy Turney-Stacy's beloved grandson, Adam Estep,
was killed in Iraq last week and she wrote a letter to that person in the White
House about it.
Her letter is here.
I, too, am a grieving grandma. My beloved grandson, Joshua Adam Cato, 24,
died Wednesday morning -- not from an Iraqi bullet, but from a beating administered
on the streets of this country. The police will deal with the perpetrators
of Josh's murder. Who will deal with the perpetrator's of Adam's murder and
the murder of more than 700 other grandchildren?
Dorothy is calling for the grandmas of this country to do something about this
situation and is circulating her letter through her circle of grandmas.
I'm with you, Dorothy. I share your pain, I share your loss, and I share your
anger and outrage. We will do something to end this. I don't know what yet.
But we will do something.
Let's widen that circle of grandmas, women who have given life, who have
watched further life come from that, only to see it wasted as if it were
just so much
cheap scrip to be spent in the pursuit of some old men's power dreams --
women who have seen enough to really know in the very cells of their bodies
how vulnerable
and precious life is.
I cannot write any more tea bag letters. I'm too angry and I can't maintain
the light controlled tone. I still send them every day but he's only getting
reruns now. (He can't read so he'll never know.) I must do something more.
So I'm going to help Dorothy in whatever is going to be done.
I have an email address - grandmas@rittiman.com. Let that be the next step.
I will collate and send what ever comes into that mailbox to Dorothy and her
circle of grandmas. Send your ideas, your stories, whatever you want to send,
whatever you think might help.
It's time to clean up this mess. Who better than grandmas to do it?
Shirley from St. Louis -- are you out there?
Sincerely,
Barbara
