Boob-Gate: A Committee I Can Get Behind

A BUZZFLASH READER COMMENTARY
by J.R. Kinnard

Buzz:

It is reassuring to know our government steps up for the really big issues. Our government has the blood of hundreds of American soldiers and thousands of Iraqi civilians on it's hands, thanks to a war initiated through scare tactics and fraudulent claims. The President and his gorillas intimidate the Press, manipulate reports presented to the American people, and lie about the air-quality as rescuers work to find survivors at The World Trade Center. They "out" intelligence officers who get out of line, bad-mouth former colleagues that dare speak the truth, and shred the Constitution in the name of security. All of these offenses warrant immediate attention, not just from the Press, but from a Congressional Committee. But it has taken a true national emergency to grease the wheels of Democracy. Today, we all awoke with one question in mind: Will America ever be the same after "Boob-Gate"?

Less than 24 hours after this obscene abomination, FCC head Michael Powell asserted a complete investigation would be undertaken. Stiff fines were promised if the buxom Ms. Jackson and the naughty Mr. Timberlake were found to have concocted this diabolical scheme. Less they feel as though they have gotten away with something, the Media has attacked the situation with ferocity long-since quelled. It is reassuring to know in times of crisis, when others might profit from our anger and frustration, the Media will protect us; providing the vital information we need to assure future mindless sports games and spectacular half-time shows are less traumatic. And I thought half-time was when you used the bathroom and made snacks. What a fool I've been!

And then there is our government. Their teeth bared, eager to protect our fragile Democracy, there is no spin-control that will deter them. "An accident?" You expect Mr. Powell to buy that excuse? You messed with the wrong powerless authority figure, Ms. Jackson. Perhaps even Master Ashcroft will view the offending footage himself . . . repeatedly . . . alone. Yes, you really messed up this time, Ms. Jackson. Excuse me, Janet (I'm not nasty!).

Seeing the lies and crimes piling up over the last two years with only token resistance has left me embittered. Now, "Boob-Gate" has restored my faith. When the stakes are so high, the government and the Media have to hold people accountable. America is a safer place with Janet Jackson's boob under surveillance. Can't you feel it?
