When Did "Winning" Become More Important Than Having a Competent, Trustworthy President?

A BUZZFLASH READER COMMENTARY

Hey, Buzz:

What have the Republicans come to?

I was just reading with relief a brief item in the New York Times (http://www.nytimes.com/2004/01/30/politics/30TERR.html) about how McCain and Lieberman (at least he's good for something) will request legislation to allow the 9/11 panel to extend its deadline, when I came across this paragraph:

"Republican strategists have worried that the report may be critical of the Bush administration -- specifically, of failures by the White House to act on intelligence before Sept. 11 suggesting that a catastrophic terrorist attack might be imminent -- and that it could damage the president's re-election hopes if presented in the middle of the campaign."

When did "winning" become more important than having a competent, trustworthy president??? When did "winning" become more important than finding out the truth about what happened on 9/11? When did "winning" become more important than making sure our country is secure?

The Republican handbasket we're all stuck in is clearly sailing merrily to hell.
