Ed Gillespie and Republican Hypocrisy

A BUZZFLASH READER COMMENTARY
by
Cathy Vance

Before Ed Gillespie and the RNC hand out the "Worst and Most Vile Form of Political Hate Speech" trophy, I have some candidates for consideration:

"Liberals have a preternatural gift for striking a position on the side of treason.”-- Ann Coulter

"Dean began his campaign as an uncompromising Lenin. Now that his Bolsheviks have been organized, he's trying to pose as Gorbachev for the masses. But for anyone who pays attention to what this power-hungry huckster says and does, he comes off as a down-market Brezhnev." -- Ralph Peters in Rupert Murdoch's New York Post.

"If the Supreme Court says that you have the right to consensual (gay) sex within your home, then you have the right to bigamy, you have the right to polygamy, you have the right to incest, you have the right to adultery. You have the right to anything." -- Senator Rick Santorum (R-PA).

"Given the choice, it's better to be viewed as a foot soldier for Bush than a spokeswoman for al-Qaeda." -- Fox News in response to Christianne Amanpour's criticism of media self-censorship in the coverage of the Iraq war.

"Femi-nazi." -- Rush Limbaugh.

"[T]he pagans and the abortionists and the feminists and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People for the American Way —all of them who have tried to secularize America, I point the finger in their face and say 'you helped this happen.'" -- Jerry Falwell, on who is to blame for the September 11 attacks.

"Well, I totally concur." -- Pat Robertson, on Jerry Falwell's assessment of who is to blame for the September 11 attacks.

I suppose one could say Mr. Gillespie's comment was "the worst and most vile form of political" hypocrisy.

Sincerely,

Cathy Vance
